Also, I know it would be very expensive but would there be even a slight chance that Netflix could purchase the rights off of nrk and npo3? As in, if Netflix wanted to would it then be possible for the show to continue?

Hi! I answered part of your question over at skamdutch.

What might be useful to understand is that Netflix in the Netherlands is huge, but there is only one Dutch show being produced by Netfix. Why? I think this is because most tv shows in The Netherlands, with the sole goals of entertainment, are international shows. NPO (1,2,3) are the only Dutch channels that air Dutch shows with any educational and journalistic value. All other commercial channel’s either air international shows or Dutch reboots of the shows (this only goes for dating shows such as Love Island). There is no need for the general public to have Dutch entertainment shows on streaming services. So for Netflix to buy the rights of NPO3 and NRK to do a Dutch reboot of another show is highly unlikely. 

IF (!!!) there is any streaming service that would buy SKAM NL it would be Videoland, which is basically the Dutch version of Netflix. HOWEVER, you can only stream it when you are in The Netherlands and Dutch shows come without English subtitles. SKAM NL was barely watched by Dutch teens, so for Videoland to buy the show would be a really dumb business move tbh.

I know everyone would like for SKAM NL to continue, but what everyone needs to understand is that NPO3 isn’t continuing SKAM NL because the DUTCH views weren’t high enough. No matter how well watched it was by internationals, it were the Dutch views that counted. In addition, I see so many tweets and posts ‘’the gay season will give you all the views’’, but the harsh reality is the LGBTQ characters and seasons (especially male-centric) are very common on Dutch tv. The views wouldn’t get a boost with Dutch viewers only because there is a young gay couple on the screen.

I think, and I know this is hard, we should just all leave it. SKAM NL had a good run, it were two wonderful seasons and now it’s time to move on.

Hahahahahah, listen I won’t tell you to stop clowning yourself and you can dream all you want, but what annoys me the most is people in the tag spreading wrong information. I’ve seen soooooo many people claim its still possible, that npo3 actually has the budget, that petitions help, that the situation is the same as skamit (which it is not bc skamit is with a commercial broadcaster) and that just pisses me off when Skamdutch and skamnl and npo3 have been nothing but transparent about the future of skam nl.

Listen someone has to say this but SKAM NL is not coming back, at all. That DM screenshot with Isabel Lamberti might look hopeful but Isabel hasn’t been apart of SKAM NL since last year November. The main director is Bobbie Koek, who had help from Isabel in season 1. The producer of the show has verbally confirmed at the screening that there is NO future for SKAM NL. SKAMNL has been cancelled, it has been confirmed by everyone and there is NOTHING we can do about it anymore.

It is much more complicated than starting a simple gofundme or a petition. Creating a show costs hundreds of thousands of euros. It’s a budget that NPO3 does not have and will never get anymore due to the political situation right now. NPO3 didn’t ‘decide’ not to spend money on SKAM NL, they weren’t able to. Their channel had a budget cut of MILLIONS. They had to cancel shows with three times more views than SKAM NL and lessened the budget of the major shows to keep other. You can sign and share that petition as much as you want but it won’t change anything.

why does skam nl not attend/or arrange any conventions? - are the team pulling an og as in they don’t place emphasise on promoting the actors in anyway, do the actors not want to....? personally i think it’s great bc the shows excellence speaks of itself but I’m biased bc i think the skam nl cast are the coolest and love the fact they’re all good friends and there’s no drama...xx

Definitely the first reason, only Zoe has given out one interview about what the show entails. SKAM NL keeps very close to the promotion strategies of the OG. In addition I also think people should remember that almost all of them are teens that only just finished high school and are not trained actors. I think they like the attention on Instagram but I also say that they find it a bit odd, as in — they’re teens and not some big celebrities.

What is happening:

SKAM NL is aired on the channel NPO 3 which is part of the Dutch National Broadcasting station NPO funded by the government. Last week all news outlet reported that the government is planning on cutting a big chunk of the budget. This would mean that NPO 3, which is catered towards 5-year-olds till 34-year-olds, will disappear as we know it. A lot of shows will be cancelled and replaced with regional television (which SKAM NL is not). Popular shows, if they fit within the target group, might be moved to NPO 1 or NPO 2. 

However, this news has not been confirmed yet by the minister of culture himself, NPO 3 has also spoken out and said they do not know about any of these plans. Other newspapers have reported changes will start in 2021. Nothing has been fully confirmed yet, there might be a chance that the parliament still has to approve of these plans.

What will happen to SKAM NL?

This is highly unlikely as it does not fit the target group, but it might get moved to NPO 1 or NPO 2.

Depending on how many shows will actually get cancelled, SKAM NL might continue airing like it would the past two seasons.

SKAM NL might only be a web series, this will have pros and cons.Cons: SKAM NL already has a tiny budget, but if they become a web series only their budget will be even less. At the moment all of NPO has a yearly budget of 19 million for online content (in comparison, Skam Austin had 250 000 per episode). This budget might stay the same and to preserve shows NPO 3 might move more shows to web series, thus that budget will have to be divided between even more shows.Pros: If SKAM NL will be a web series only there might be a chance of longer episodes.

SKAM NL will be cancelled. (Is there a chance that SKAM NL might move to privately owned networks? No clue, I highly doubt it as only the NPO is producing online content right now).

I think this is also the reason why we do not have any news about renewal. NPO knew that the government wanted to cut their budget and might have waited until the plans are confirmed before they are planning shows for the upcoming year(s).

Update: the official plans have been released today, all speculation about the cuts has been confrimed however the new programming should start in 2021.

The NTR, a branch within NPO that mainly broadcasts on NPO3 and has to take care of all the culture and educatuion on tv, has to make sure they’re still delivering a good offer of programs. Their shows don’t necesarily have to be cancelled or removed but they have to find a spot elsewhere, such as NPO1, NPO2 or online!

NPO3 has stated on their instagram that the renewal of SKAM NL is still up in the air all because of the budget cuts! They have to rearrange everything and figure out how the can still produce as much shows as possible with a smaller budget.
