I hate official reporting on Eurovision
Why can't official news outlets have good reporting on Eurovision?. Im reading this article by the BBC that tries to report on the continuing controversy of Israeli participation, but ultimatly is an article that accuses the boycotting countries of trying to oust Ukraine out of the competition (completely different topic), gives Isreal a platform to continue to vicitmise themselfes and ends with an argument against public broadcasting (????).
Isreal has a long and documented (this is one article, just google for more) history of using the ESC as propoganda. As Vuletic mentions in the BBC article, "historically, entry into the song contest has been used by some countries to signal an end to their international isolation or demonstrate their pro-Western credentials". ESC is a platform on which Israel can (and it most certainly does) project European belonging. Therefore, any war with Israel can be framed as a war with Europe, or at least a war Europeans have a stake in. Which in turn, opens the door for European political leaders to keep supporting Israel without being at risk of being voted out of office. ( I think the linked article explains how deep Eurovision and European culture are linked but again, the BBC article mostly avoids this).
However, Israel using the ESC as a propoganda tool is not the main reason for the current controversy and backlash. Israel is not the only country that uses the ESC to project European belonging to get European support for its wars. Some boycotting broadcasters have mentioned the continued use of ESC as a propoganda tool as a source of concern. However, unlike how the article frames the situation, this is not why the boycot is happening. This video is a good explenation but here are the main points:
The Israeli broadcaster is actively breaking journalistic integrity rules, which are needed to be a member of the EBU (not mentioned by the BBC).
There have been many complaints about the behaviour of the Israeli deligation at the ESC, which have mostly been ignored by the EBU (not mentioned by the BBC).
A marketing campaign, funded by the Israeli government (always has been illegal unlike what the EBU wants you to believe), that abuses the weaknesses of the current voting system (the BBC frames this argument as if maybe Europe supports Israel just as much we support Ukraine)
Last december, all member broadcasters of the EBU came together for a meeting where Israeli participation was discussed. To protect Israel, the EBU grouped the vote with a different vote on changing of the rules. The new rules were supposed to "fix" all the complaints against Israel and therefore would make it able for Israel to participate again without controversy (up for debate if you ask me bc among other things they still did not adress the first point i mentioned but whatever). So, according to the EBU, if the new rules were accepted there was no reason to oust Israel, or even have a vote on that. This is when the broadcasters decided to boycot Eurovision. Not just because of the propaganda, but because the EBU is unwilling to do anything about Israel breaking rules. There is no discussion whether or not Israel broke them, it is clear and documented what happened and the EBU continues to protect Israel.
I could finish with something about the last statement about public broadcasting but im tired of writing something no one will read and thats a different discussion all together. absolutely wild how that article ends with that, BBC really shooting themselfes in the head.
TLDR; Yes Israel uses ESC for propaganda, no this is not the reason for the boycott, they are breaking rules as well and the EBU does nothing but protect Israel, which is why countries are boycotting.
