wunder’s picks: “Nobody” and “Ice Out My Arms”.

wunder’s review: This album is two things: a pop album and a rap album. Not combined, separately. The first disc is entirely pop and the second is entirely rap, hip-hop, and trap. This is my issue with Khaled, and simultaneously what I love about him. He makes great pop music, that is no question. I’d love a pop album by Khaled. However, he’s also a great hip-hop producer, and I’d love a rap record. So, on this album, I love both the pop songs and the rap songs individually, but on the same tape, they just don’t coalesce. The extremes of this albums genre’s are exemplified by my two favorite tracks. “Nobody” is a beautiful pop anthem with a great verse from Nicki. “Ice Out My Arms” on the other hand is phenomenal trap song. They’re both great songs, but they just don’t mix. They are so fundamentally different, and yet, they’re on the same tape. In essence, I cannot deny that many of the songs on this album are catchy and enjoyable, but this album has a critcal flaw in that it simply does not have a cohesive tone.

wunder’s pick: “Anything”.

wunder’s review: After a long wait and a few delays, SZA finally dropped a project that exceeded all expectations. Seeing an immense amount of growth from her last project--the EP “Z”--this album has better production, a more concise and focused message, and riveting vocals. SZA took risks on many of these tracks, like “Anything” and “Go Gina”, and it really paid off as these tracks are some of the most interesting on the entire project. This album was not perfect however as it wavered in the final act with inconsistent instrumentals and a sense of disjointedness. Still, this is a great project and has me that much more of a SZA fan. I eagerly await whatever she has to come.

wunder’s pick: 15. “Them Changes”.

wunder’s review: Weird and simultaneously genius, Drunk is easily one of the most unique albums to come out of 2017. This album is funky, heartfelt, and even funny. It is a mess of ideas but somehow still maintains a consistent mood. It is not without its faults: some of the songs are a bit too short for my liking and it is also a bit too scatterbrained at times. Nonetheless, this is album is extremely inventive and establishes Thundercat as a new favorite of mine.

wunder’s review: HNDRXX defied Future’s usual repertoire of mumble rapping and trap beats by venturing deep into the realm of moody R&B. Purple Reign, one of Future’s best projects, had glimpses of the same type of R&B and was all the better for it. Future took those glasses and turned them into an entire album, which worked greatly to its advantage. This is by and far my favorite Future project. There's little for me to complain about with this album because it truly is wonderful. I’d be remiss to also mention that this album was released just a week after another great album of Future’s, and works as a great contrast to the style he has on FUTURE.

wunder’s review: After much anticipation, Drake finally gifted us with this beautiful playlist that reaffirms his hold as king of the game. This project revolves around Drake’s life after Views and the subsequent reflection on his come-up he went through after placing the jewel in his crown on his last album. This is a different Drake than we’ve seen in a while. Drake is no longer fighting to convince you he’s the top dog. Instead, he has developed a confidence in his music that shows listeners he truly is the king right now, no persuasion required. As a long time Drake fan, I was astonished by this project in its beauty. Despite some questionable features from the European artists, this playlist is making a real compelling run at the best of 2017.

wunder’s pick: 6. “Moves”.

wunder’s review: This is another solid project by Big Sean. In the past couple years Big Sean has been consistently putting out great albums, and as a result, quickly moving up the rungs of the rap game. This project is a wonderful piece of work on Sean’s part, but unfortunately, to me, it fell short of Dark Sky Paradise. Sean, who has been toting this project around as his most ambitious work, didn’t rise above his last album. This is hardly an insult though since Dark Sky Paradise has one of the most solid tracklists of any rap album in recent years. I Decided was still a very good LP, and I hope with age my opinion of it rises.

wunder’s review: Sampha’s debut studio album Process is a wonderfully introspective, 10 track journey into Sampha’s creative genius. This album is a trip through a wonderland of pleasant sounds. Through deep valleys and poignant peaks, Sampha’s voice is the one constant keeping you focused on the small details of the songs. For an album to be as impressive as this, let alone a debut, is extremely impressive. This is a great first showing for 2017.
