THIS IS A SCHOOL PROJECT: PLEASE ENGAGE/ REACT
(drop a comment 🥺 i’m an anthropology student & i need some interaction online for analysis) ✨
I call this collection:
“RAW MATTER, REFINED MATERIAL”
“How the human interacts with geological resources & attaches meaning to the properties of these unearthed minerals. How these materials find refinement through usage, mostly for ornamental purposes in Modern society. The connection of the development, formation & modification of these rocks in everyday life.”
1 + 2: Himalayan Salt Lamp
Decorative lights carved out of mineral-rich pink Himalayan salt, commonly harvested from the Khewra Salt mines in Pakistan.
Salt lamps are mainly used for commercial profit as many people buy them for personal use due to the ‘ambiance’ created by its pink glow.
They are considered ‘natural ionizers’.
3: Tumble Stones
These are given its signiture smooth, round & polished look by the use of a barrel rotary machine.
Are you able to recognise any? Drop some names in the comments!
4: Palo Santo (Bursera Graveolens)
In Spanish Palo Santo means “holy wood”.
This wooden stick originated from a tree native in South America, mainly Peru & Ecuador’s dry tropical forests, which produces a very aromatic resin when burned.
The wood, resin & oil that is extracted has been used by indigenous peoples for thousands of years.
Its purposes are mainly therapeutic, medicinal or metaphysically beneficial to ‘cleanse’ spaces, bodies & objects.
5 + 6: Raw Rose Quartz
A popular & well-recognised mineral in the Quartz family.
These crystals form in big sizes due to forming very deep in the Earth’s crust, under a great deal of heat, preventing it from crystallising out into smaller pieces.
It is sourced mostly from Brazil, however it is not uncommon to occur in many other regions.
Commonly used for meditative & decorative purposes.
The purpose of this post is to give a brief overview of each object to hopefully allow you to see the intricacies of our relationship to different naturally-occurring substances.
Thank you for reading !
