Cause yeah, everybody here has got someone to lean on.
A gorgeous, surreal sight. Reminds one that life is limited but living is infinite.
On the straight path.
Time has run out and the turning of the gears has ceased.
My watch has stopped!
I met up with an ex-AirForce colleague and friend of mine, Beng Yeow aka Edwin Salvatore. With a name lifted out from the depths of the Godfather, I set out to meet him with a mixture of trepidation and fear.
Meeting up with him was great. We conversed and shared what we had been up to the past year, and it felt nice to have a fellow Singaporean to talk to. His female friend, Shenka ( I hope this is how you spell her name) was there too, and after having made the appropriate introductions, the three of us set off for Randwick to buy groceries. Or should I say, I accompanied them on their evening excursion.
Over at Coles supermarket, Edwin offered some advice on what foodstuff to get. Basically, Pasta is King. Pasta rules the world! He also enquired about my girlfriend, and how she was doing. Naturally, I broached the subject of whether he was attached at the moment.
It was a pleasant surprise when he gave an ill-disguised smile and dropped the revelation that he was happily attached to Shenka! I gave an exclamation and berated him for not telling me earlier.
Congratulations to you both! "Love is like a friendship caught on fire. In the beginning a flame, very pretty, often hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering. As love grows older, our hearts mature and our love becomes as coals, deep-burning and unquenchable." - Bruce Lee
I worry that I am lapsing back into the old routine of sloth and laziness. Somehow, familiarity with one's surroundings tends to bring about strong bouts of procrastination. Living on campus means that I am a stone's throw away from the University proper. Yet somehow, I persist in dilly dallying and indulging my attentions in unimportant stuff.
I have to be careful. I have to remember what my priorities are, and I cannot lose track of myself. I have to stay focused.
At times, I wonder how my girlfriend is doing back in Singapore. I think a long distance relationship like mine can be compared to container. Hear me out on this. The vacuum inside an airtight container symbolizes the excellent status of the relationship. Everything is going fine, communication with each other is going along without a hitch, and there really isn't much to worry about.
Then comes that dreaded word: Insecurities.
Insecurities are like a canker; a disease. They force the container lid ajar ever so slightly, and air seeps in. Because of this damning factor, the relationship starts to deteriorate. As one insecurity compounds another, the partners in this relationship start to think the worst of everything. The compulsion to be overbearing and possessive comes about, which leads to further emotional friction. Innocent party photos get misconstrued and misunderstood.
Eventually, everything shatters. We weep and slowly pick up the pieces of our heart.
I know that the next three years will be trying and taxing on the both of us love. More for you than for me, since I'm in another country, experiencing a totally different culture than back at home. I believe that we have such a deep, immovable trust in each other that pulling through this is very possible. In fact, I have never considered otherwise. You make me wanna strive, and I hope that I evoke a similar reaction in you. We study, and we work, and we come home exhausted at the end of a tiring day. But right before we sleep, I know that we're in each other's minds. That we love each other very much.
I just can't wait to hold you in my arms again.
I would really like to gym over here, if not for the sad fact that the rates are astonishingly inflated. $99 for a month is akin to daylight robbery. I guess calisthenic exercises will have to suffice during my stint here in Sydney.
Who would've thought that I'd actually be hankering to gym? I suppose that the regular gym session back in Singapore have been effective. They have inculcated in me the mindset that regular exercise is mandatory. It is essential to healthy living and also to a robust mind.
Speaking of which, I really ought to head to sleep. I shall wake up early tomorrow and make myself a good breakfast!
That just means cereal (milo cereal) and milk to be honest.
Au Revoir, me mateys!
sneaky.
Can I snug you?
Today marks the second day in NSW Sydney where I have slept without any blanket, bolster or pillow. Each night before I rest, I put on three layers of tops and ensure a dual layer of pants covers the area below the hip.
ALL TO NO AVAIL. I still wake up several times throughout the night feeling cold, lonely and miserable.
Okay, I jest. But seriously, the nights here can be really cold if you're not careful. No more worries on that though, since I finally forked out a horrific, whopping amount of cash to purchase my pillow and "soft fabric quilt"aka blanket. AUS$140 to be exact! The materials used in the production of such bedstuff must be fit for a king. I'll put it to the test later..
Australia seems to be a melting pot of immigrants from many different countries. According to Bringing Australia to Life - Synovate Research:
Approximately 24% of the Australian population were born outside of Australia
Approximately 85% of Australia’s population is of European descent
Australian consumers have a European rather than American sensibility
US influences are visible through the arts and fast food, but most Australians are keen to distance Australia from the US
European preference for uniqueness / authenticity over “mass culture”
Prefer ‘understated cool’ and subtle; not ‘in your face’
Don’t want to bring attention to themselves or look like they’re
Australian’s are generally ‘open minded’ to other cultures and integrating aspects of other cultures into their lives, notably, foreign cuisines
Australians are proudly independent – British heritage is no longer a significant source of pride or difference (except maybe, the British sense of humour!)
Australian consumers are very diverse and unique thus making it harder for the “mass” advertising
I'd have to agree with these observations, and I'm only in my third day here! The Australians seem really tolerant towards other cultures. In fact, an overwhelming number of them are friendly and will not hesitate to assist you should the need arise. I can see why my mom was afraid I would not want to go back home to Singapore.
Well, today was uneventful as usual. Woke up a little over 10, freshened up and immediately headed downstairs to purchase the linen set. Upon lugging it up to my room, off I went to Western Eastgardens shopping center for lunch and shopping. Sartorial elegance is the least of my concerns of course, I needed a reliable frying pan and a pot for Masterchef Wong to showcase his culinary skills.
I nearly forwent everything when I chanced across a kitchen appliance called a "convection oven". The description stated that it allowed its owner to "boil, steam, fry, cook, heat" any food you wanted. OH THE POSSIBILITIES. I mulled over it for a good half hour while walking aimlessly around the supermarket. In the end, I decided not to splurge on it and went for a non-stick frying pan and a pot. I don't even think my mom uses a convection oven, and if mom doesn't, I'm not going to. Hmm, maybe I'll get it tomorrow...
A word of thanks to me girlfriend Kaisi for encouraging me to keep an online journal. The thought of regularly updating it was indeed a daunting one, but upon starting on this venture, it does seem really manageable! If writer's block is really oppressing me, I can always fall back on good ol' www.goodreads.com/quotes for some inspirational quotes as a substitute post.
It's strange, suddenly having so much time to myself. And it feels oddly comforting actually. It's comforting to know that I am at peace with myself. It's comforting to know that I am no longer that impressionable young kid back in secondary school. It's comforting to know that living independently is a really realistic possibility.
I mean, once I get around to paying off my debt to my parents. Shouldn't take too long, very manageable within my lifetime. Wait, what was I.... :|
