Idk why the west/mainstream Japan misrepresents us so badly but Jiraikei ≈ emo ok? ( ´;ﾟ;ё;ﾟ;)

Me and my anon twitter friends never once stepped foot in a host club, and a lot of us drank Strong Zero/pink monsters as a meme and then at some point it breached containment. Its like if non-tumblr ppl truly believed in Goncharov and inexplicably attacked us for it.

There's def offshoots of jiraikei that are frequenting host clubs and unironically drinking Strong Zero, and they're valid too! Maybe they're the majority now! I'm a bit out of the loop since I live abroad atm.

But its just that those people wrote a bunch of articles as self appointed representatives, and media liked this skew better for shock value views. So people who watched/read those articles began adopting the name, and it snowballed.

Wanted to add my voice, since I'm the only bilingual one of our little corner of jiraikei twitter, and it makes me sad seeing my friends being flamed for things we dont do, bc we're all vulnerable people that gravitated towards this subculture. (We all dress differently! But a lot of us had similar taste. Its a subculture, rather than a fashion type. Seriously, same as emo.)

Many of my small offshoot are queer, rejected by family and society, so we found each other on Twitter. Its similar to the comfort in proana forums. I don't promote self harm, most of us are trying to quit and post when we relapse, bc its better to be honest and open about it in a safe space, than to feel guilt and have someone commit suicide in isolation.

This is probably where the posers got the idea of promoting self harm/gatekeeping.

We DO support each other, albeit clumsily. We're exhausted by mental health care inaccessibility/ableist "positive" placations. None of us had healthy relationships growing up, hence we ended up here. Please cut us some slack, we're learning(｀；ω；´)

We DONT promote or egg each other on. We oust abusive, manipulative people.

For me, personally, seeing my truest thoughts out loud was key to recovery. I've stepped away for a year now, so perhaps the subculture has shifted since then, idk.

And in no way do I claim to be a monolith! I just want to remind everyone to take info from various sources and biases, to form a better opinion about a culture drastically different from their own!

Explaining this for a Western mindset is very hard, but the jiraikei hate has sometimes leaned into racism, appropriation, and weaponization of my country's various subcultures. It is ok to love and take part in our subcultures, we are so happy! But to be hostile against a culture foreign to you with information gained solely via the internet/social media/a handful of echo chamber contacts is a red flag. Beware of people who claim to know the sole truth.

And to add to all of that, in Japan, we don't define stiff boundaries the way the west does. Its sickening that some of yall are trying to do a gatekeeping proxy war.

Misinformation about Ezaki and Menhera.

Can we stop giving Ezaki too much credit, please??? It’s actually kind of contributing to erasure of the OG menhera community, and that is a really important community for healing and support, and for stigma-busting activism regarding mental health. He didn’t create menhera, or the menhera community, or the fashion. Here’s the truth.

The menhera community, an online community of people wanting to seek mental wellness, existed since before 2001. They cover literally anything that would cause one mental suffering: bad break up? LGBT facing homophobia? abusive household? stressed at work? mental illness? Any of that and more. They officially began using the name in 2001. Since then the word ‘menhera’ has been used for many things:

> It was used in music, there was in fact a whole visual kei movement about it. They even have music festivals with ‘menhera’ in the title. > It was used in art. Artistic members of the menhera community have been creating vent art since the beginning, but it became popular to print the artwork onto clothing. The menhera fashion was born, featuring little more than oversized comfy hoodies with menhera vent art printed on it. The artists call their art ‘menhera’, call the clothing ‘menhera’, and the events that they made to sell their art and clothing were also called ‘menhera’. > It was also used in a manga titled “Menhera-chan” - no, NOT by Ezaki Bisuko. It came before that. See here. It’s about a girl who is actually a member of the online menhera community. > The Japanese general public, who stigamatise mental illness anyway, heard the word and of course stigmatised it too. This didn’t stop the menhera community and movement, but it certainly doesn’t help it. Claiming this is the only meaning of the word is erasure. > Menhera starts spreading rapidly through the art and fashion, reaching more and more people who relate to it.

Now, about Ezaki… Although he was abused, has depression, and is LGBT, he is not a member of the menhera board and community, because he doesn’t take part in it, simple as that. He is so detached from that community that he even seems to believe that the stigmatised version of the word is the original (it is not, see above) and that the community and their culture doesn’t exist at all. He creates a satire manga called “Wrist-cutting Warrior Menhera-chan”, featuring characters named after subcultures and fashion. It becomes popular and since menhera fashion is also becoming popular the character becomes in-demand. He takes part in some ‘Menhera’ events hosted by the community, and he collaborates with fashion brands including self-titled ‘Menhera’ brands to produce Menhera-chan clothing. Then he decides that, since “Menhera is a bad word” (his misunderstanding), to push the use of a new word for the fashion: “Yamikawaii”. He renames his manga to “Yamikawa Warrior Menhera-chan” (It is likely that his publisher asked him to do this though). He agrees to interviews with the media in which he presents himself as central to this fashion, and publicizing the word “Yamikawaii”. He then goes on to tell people in his infamous tumblr post that “Menhera is derogatory”, “there is no menhera culture” and “use [his word] Yamikawaii instead”. His fans, thinking he is in fact the king of menhera yamikawaii because he wrote a manga called ‘Menhera-chan’ eat this shit up even though it completely erases the 18-year history of the menhera community. But now you know the truth. So let’s stop stroking his ego and spreading this misinformation, okay? please? Thanks.

Edit: Just to clarify, it’s fine to like Ezaki, Menhera-chan or Yamikawaii, just please stop spreading misinformation and erasure about the menhera community. That’s all I ask.
