DANAĀ SCULLYĀ |Ā TheĀ X-Files:Ā IĀ WantĀ toĀ BelieveĀ (2008)
idiotsĀ (affectionate)ć»[105/?] ⤷ 5.12Ā ā āBad Bloodā
now on season five. my favorite thing about sculder is that everyone in scullyās life advises her against devoting herself to mulder and the narrative punishes her for doing it anyway. her family is supportive of scullyās career to start, but the instant her codependency with mulder starts bleeding beyond the professional realm - impacting her health, her ability to be present in the lives of her family, and resulting in the death of her own sister - they understandably turn hostile towards him. but even after getting cancer and coming to near death, scully still trusts him. she believes in him. she chooses him. and we as the audience get it! because weāve seen that mulder usually is correct, and always prioritizes scullyās wellbeing. we know exactly why scully would trust him more than even her own flesh and blood. but we also empathize with scullyās family because theyāre not privy to that. all they know is scullyās life took a turn for the worse when mulder entered. of course they hate him.
for the first five seasons we are watching someone loose themselves to another person, without the easy explanations of āwell they are datingā or āthey did get marriedā. they are coworkers. coworkers who also lay down their lives for one another. by episode two, scully is negotiating a hostage release of this man she barely knows but would risk everything for. they are beyond dating or marriage, so intimate with each other that itās got people worried. thatās codependency baby!!! thatās the shit I live for!!!

Scully was in the kitchen, putting away dishes from dinner, and talking to her mother on the phone.
"Don't forget about brunch this Sunday," Maggie reminded her.
Scully winced. She had definitely forgotten about the plans they made a few weeks ago. Luckily, there was no out-of-town case she was working on, so she wouldn't have to cancel. Scully always felt guilty cancelling plans, especially with her mom.
"And bring Fox with you," Maggie requested.
Scully sighed, "Mom, I don't know if he'd want to come." She wouldn't mind spending time with him outside of work, but Mulder was not the type to sit at Sunday brunch when he could be chasing cryptids in the woods.
"Dana, tell him I insist. He'll come."
She rolled her eyes at her mom's confidence. "Okay, Mother."

Journey to the Truth - tangent: Dreamland Fic Recs (S6 E04 - E05)
So, I was hit with a migraine during these episodes, which means I read a LOT of fic. That means more for you. Fortunately, the arc is primed for msr. As for the pics, this is one of my all-time favorite scenes.
Pre-Dreamland
"Vespers" by Penumbra (gossamer) - @volpeantica gave me the heads up that this is the same author as "Heuvelmans' On the Track" that I gushed over. Thanks to them and happenstance, I decided to check this particular fic out at the perfect moment. The language is lush.
During Dreamland
"Out of the Damn Car" by ATTHS_TWICE - what was Mulder dreaming about while mumbling Scully's name?
Post-Dreamland
"The X Between Us/Season 6, Chapter 4" by Atths2 - Scully won't remember any of this...
Begins During Dreamland II (AU)
"if you weren't so" by seek_its_opposite - differences in the ending & M&S remember what happened
Post-Dreamland II
"Who did it better?" by kantigone - some of the event memories are bleeding through, and M&S want answers. obviously
"Confusion Sets In" by RocketMan (gossamer) - Mulder finds his apartment 'altered'
"The X Between Us/Season 6, Chapter 5" by Atths2 - Mulder has an unusual dream (Have I mentioned how much I'm enjoying this series yet? Deceptively simple, but right on target time after time.)
Dreamland AU
"the best happens on long car drives" by patheticpineapple - the car conversation without the whole body swap/pesky episode nonsense
"Underneath Your Skin" by crescentmoon223 - M&S body swap, a shorter one
"Swap" by Soronia - M&S body swap, a longer one
My favorite part of Dreamland may now be the fic. I always felt like there was so much left untapped. So thank you writers for building on that well-seeded but under- developed territory. You make my heart happy! Thanks so much for reading!
iām getting caught up on my āMarked for Laterā list, and itās gettin dangerously short.
tell me your favorite TXF fic that youāve read recently, pretty please?
I'm finally reading cecily_sass's (no tag because they probably don't want to be bothered š ) The Boy on the Beach, and I'm only 5 chapters in, but I understand now why it shows up on all best-of-all-time TXF rec lists.
I know that this is very classic Chris Carter but I cannot understand how he⦠missed the central conflict of IWTB? It is actually about their relationship and the āscaresā that he is so fond of is just the inciting event that forces them to examine their relationship and eventually conclude that they have to return to fighting for both sides. Mulder cannot dedicate himself solely to the darkness, and Scully is limited if she only treads amongst the known world, and to give up on that interplay on either side would be a fatal mistake. Theyāre tested for this over and over. āThis stubbornness of yours? Itās why I fell in love with you.ā āAnd itās why we canāt be together.ā <This is the central conflict, actually
Chris Carter proving once again that he just doesn't understand how stories work. He's one of those sci-fi guys that's convinced their Cool Idea is so cool that it will summon an audience that values the Idea as much as they do. But the reality is that no idea is cool and original enough to circumvent the need for story structure. And for as long as humanity has been telling stories, they've been about people and relationships. Mulder and Scully are the Plot and the aliens serve their character journeys. In much the same way that the plot of Star Wars is not the lightsabers and the spaceships and funky aliens, they're all set dressing for a story about standing up against a tyrannical government. In both cases the aliens add interest and texture to the world, but the core stories and the reasons they resonate and people care about them still are far more universal. And while I'm very picky about horror movies, the best ones inevitably make you care about the characters they're putting in danger. It's not scary without emotional investment, and Mulder and Scully (and their relationship) Are the emotional investment for the X-Files
