the whole point of the umbrella academy is that it is about the cycle of abuse. this is displayed both figuratively (ending the world over and over. doomed to repeat the process. your actions as a direct result of how you were treated as a kid) and literally (reggieâs abuse being shown on screen and portrayed in a negative light. the siblings bitching about it. especially klaus who became an addict due, in no small part, to his fathers actions and how he tries so hard to break from it but that he canât because he just doesnât know any other way).
so itâs fucking infuriating how the ending of the show is âyou are the reason for the cycle of abuse (apocalypses) continuing and the abuser should be forgiven (because he did his best with that he had and eventually got it ârightâ).â
narratively, the show tells us that the cycle of abuse will only end if we accept that our abuse is our own fault.
i have many other problems with the ending but this is my main one.
Hello!!!! No one gonna talk about this???
Hi! I'll talk about it :D
I was an animator on this film, working for a year and a half on it (if any of you guys were wondering where I'd gone). While we were making it, we kept asking each other what the reception for this odd, special movie would be, and joking about it going to the Oscars. Lol can you imagine!!
Fast forward two years, and here we are.
At the Oscars.
Absolutely wild.
Please DO talk about it more! This movie had a minuscule budget compared to the other Oscar nominees; it's traditional 2D animation in a world where 3D has taken over; it's kid-friendly but not FOR kids; and it's SILENT.
SILENT! Not one line of dialogue. And the amazing scriptwriting and animatic work made it not just entertaining, but exciting and absolutely heartbreaking. My first day at the studio they made me watch the animatic, and even in that rough state it made me emotional. I had to hold back tears two or three times. And I did my work from that day on fully believing in this project.
Everybody I met there--background artists, character designers, producers, animators, clean-up artists, all through to the guys at compo, color key, edition, music, the skater girls who served as reference for Robot's and Dog's dance and more things that I'm definitely forgetting--showed a huge world what a passionate little team can do. I am SO proud of all of us.
This movie is weird, it's unique, and even coming from a very biased person, it's a freaking treasure and deserves all the praise it gets.
I will be posting some of my rough animations here soon too, so be in the lookout if that's something you wanna see ;)

you: joel was selfish and he doomed the entire world what about the cure what about ellieâs choice in the matter
me: joel is a parent who acted like any parent in a similar situation would act â selfishly to save their child. joel may have believed a cure was possible, but we as an audience (through context clues and canon) know it was not. the doctor operating on ellie had no medical degree. the fireflies did not have the resources skill set or ability to create and distribute a cure. the fireflies took away ellieâs choice putting her on the operating table without her consent. joel did not doom the world because the world was already doomed. a cure was not a fix it all, nor would a hack job operation have created one. ellie would have died for nothing and joel, after being told he couldnât see his daughter despite the fireflies condemning her to death, made the tough decision to save his daughterâhis one and only reason to be alive
I joked a few minutes ago about how in internet discourse anyone over 25 is a âqueer elderâ but come to think of it most of these young discoursers donât even believe such a concept exists. Gay men who watched their entire friends groups perish to AIDS are âprivileged cis gays,â older trans women who use dated terminology to describe their own experiences are problematic, elders are just a conservative old guard to rebel against, and anyone over thirty who speaks to you at all must be a predator. The first time I heard the phrase âokay groomerâ online, it wasnât coming from self identified conservatives but from tiktok teens reacting against leather at Pride. You guys are ignorant and uncultured and proud of it!
Nobody hates you because youâre young. They hate you because youâre ignorant and annoying. Hope this helps.
Speaking as a âqueer elderâ (donât really feel like one but shit if weâre joking about anyone older than 25 being one might as well roll with it). To my young queers (and my young LGBT+ folks who donât use queer).
You are not getting pushback from the older segment of the queer community because you are young.
Itâs because you came into the spaces we built for you and instantly tried to kick us out.
Itâs because we opened the doors for you and you walked in and demanded that everyone you donât like leave. You demanded that the kinksters, the crossdressers, the freaks and the weirdos, the non-binary trans folks, the people with conflicting identity labels, the people who apparently donât enjoy their smut âthe right wayâ leave.
Itâs because you have thrown yourself into queer spaces with all the fucking audacity of a straight white woman raging at a rainbow flag in a grocery store, wailing about how itâs not appropriate for children.
Itâs because you apparently think that you have some right to tell us, and other queer people your age, HOW to be queer.
Itâs because a SCARY number of you think that using the word queer is bad in the first place.
Itâs because so many of you have come here drowning in radfem rhetoric, and your response to being corrected is to scream âpedo!â At any queer peer who disagrees with your puritanical approach to kink and fantasy.
Itâs because so many of you think that being LGBT+ means you canât possibly hold onto the conservative values you grew up with, and when youâre called on it you attack anyone and everyone in your way.
Us queer elders arenât hating on you because youâre young. Itâs because you have come into the space we built- a space that we built on from what OUR queer elders built. Which was built on what THEIR queer elders built. And so on, all held up by a foundation of fucking blood of the queers who did not fucking survive, who we lost before I was born, and continue to be lost.
If we seem hostile to you and the ideology you bring? Itâs because us elders know a threat when we see it. And the shit I see SO MANY of you young queers saying IS a threat. No different than the threats weâve faced before. Except this time. Itâs coming from inside the fucking house- and we wonât tolerate that.
100% That part up right there.Â

The Timeliness of Carmyâs Appeal
I think itâs really interesting that this character has transfixed so many of us. The television landscape is so saturated. There are tons of hot men doing hot things streaming across America but this man broke through as a unique sex symbol at a distinct time. We have been through three years of a pandemic, social justice movements, January 6th, hyper politicization, and hyperpolarization. We are in a new age of audacious grift (think Anna Delvey, Elizabeth Holmes, George Santos, Sam Bankman-Fried), Chat GPT, the faux-reality of social media and reality tv, unidentified flying objects, and the potential for WWIII with high nuclear probability. Â
While shows focused on the rich and infamous will always attract mega attention (think The White Lotus and Succession) I think The Bear stood out because itâs about normal people trying to survive, trying to thrive, trying to keep their sanity, trying to have pride in what they do. After everything most of us have been through, many just find a hollowness in caring about the one percent. I personally am not as into shows and movies about insanely wealthy people, or even super comfortable middle class people, navel gazing and being wretched anymore. I used to love the escapism of watching the magnificent splendor of indulgence but now I just want gritty and raw realism from characters I can relate to, from characters I could be, from characters I could meet in real life, from characters I could mundanely order a sandwich from.Â
And along with that is the idea that what I find most attractive in a man right now is not prim and polished. Iâm tired of gazing at men that fit the model type, Iâm tired of men from the pajama class. I want someone who came from the bottom and worked their way up but didnât land behind a computer. Iâm tired of men who hide and are terrified of danger. Iâm tired of men who look untouched and unbothered. I want someone I can tell my fucked up life story to and he gets it because he has the same. But heâs not the typical bad boy roughneck boy next door. Heâs not a bully, heâs not a sadist. He doesnât get into trouble just to get into it. Thereâs something in his core that just wants to be good. He isnât the âsexually competent dirt bagâ. Heâs a gentle soul caught up in epic drama and fighting to get to ânormalâ.
I think many of us are tired of too soft and too hard. Carmy is just right. Yes, there is the physical hotness, the way he moves, the fluctuations of his voice, his craftsmanship, his style⌠but I think at the heart of it is that he hits a deeply emotional pitch that is genuine and not precious. He just feels right in our present moment for anybody not wanting a fake fantasy of a perfect man. Most of us are broken. So expecting some prince charming is not where itâs at.Â
Edited to add: This man will scrub a floor on his knees. Not because he has to, because he wants to and isnât afraid to get dirty. A toilet explodes on him and heâs like, OK, NEXT, gotta pay the bills, keep it movin. Thatâs it.Â
