In typical Kai fashion, he’s currently bouncing around the shop with more enthusiasm than the average person would display by miles. He’d had an idea for his kids next week – one that involves paints, paper, and of course, glitter – and he’s perusing the shelves for anything that’ll be able to lend in making his vision come alive. He isn’t a particularly artistic person, at least when it comes to the more ‘conventional’ idea of an artist, but he is creative, and he loves to explore new things and to keep his lessons entertaining and fun. To say he isn’t paying attention to what he’s doing when he crashes into someone would be putting it lightly (he was in a different world), and the air is knocked out of him, uncertainty painting itself over his expression for a tick or two before it clears away. “It’s no problem, honestly! Nothing’s broken. Y'know, this reminds me of a time in Tesco when I was fourteen, and my mates and I were running about like chickens without heads. I ended up eating shit so hard after tripping over someone’s ill-placed foot that I gave meself a black eye. This is nothing compared to that.”
Chuckling at the story, they smiled. “Thanks. I wasn’t even in this galaxy with how spaced out I am.” Noticing a container of glitter glue, as well as a few packs of paint brushes had fallen, they knelt down to pick them up. As they did, however, they noticed their hands shake ever so slightly, causing them to nearly drop the paint brushes. As they handed the supplies to the stranger, they silently hoped the shaking wasn’t as obvious as it looked. “Here.”
he’s tapping index fingers on the top of his phone, debating whether or not he wants to press the call button. darby’s been ruminating and, ordinarily, he’d be able to coax the bad feelings away with a cuddle of either his brother or his darling pierre. but bobby’s in class and although his kitten is lovely, darby knows pierre won’t have any advice regarding his owner’s broken heart. so with a sigh, darby’s tapping his screen and lifting the pink-covered phone up to his ear. xand might not be able to fix things but they’d listen. they always listen and that’s what darby needs right now. anxiety flutters in his stomach and his grip on the device is so hard that his fingers shake with tension. he doesn’t like unloading his problems on anyone, not even on his designated ‘mom friend’ and personal therapist. he hates feeling like a burden and languishing over his failed relationship feels like the epitome of selfishness. darby’s hoping xand will be able to talk that sensation out of his aching bones and his breath hitches as the call connects. “… xand?” he all but whispers. ( @xandyost )
Xand had been closing shop early, having had a few appointments shifted around, when they heard their phone buzz from the bag on their shoulder. Pulling the phone out, and looking at the screen, they saw the familiar id photo of them and Darby. They smiled at the picture, getting a small kick out of it as usual. The contrast between the two of them always made them chuckle: Darby looks like his usual pastel self, standing nearly 6 inches over Xand, who looks like a member of the Addams family, with all the black they’re wearing. Sliding their finger across the screen, they put the phone up to their ear. They had barely managed to hear their name from the other line. “Darby, I can barely hear you,” They say, before hearing the ragged breathing from the other line. They lowered their voice slightly, enough so he could hear them, but not as loud as they were before. “Hey, are you okay?”
As Xand walked into the store, they wished they hadn’t managed to run out of sketch paper when they were having a major depressive episode. Damn the local pharmacy for not having their meds in on time. It was going to be a long 3 days waiting for them to come in. Chewing at their nails out of habit, they looked for a good sized sketchpad. They were so out of it, they didn’t realize someone was headed towards them, until they were halfway to the ground, post collision. Drawing their fingers away from their mouth, they looked up at who they’d crashed into. “I’m so sorry, I’m a little bit out of it today. Did anything break?”
“i-i couldn’t, um– i couldn’t s-sleep last night,” he begins, and it’s equally as unusual for him to initiate a conversation as it is for him to struggle with sticking to his sleeping routine; eight hours each and every night, nothing more and nothing less. “s-so i, uh– i-i decided t-to bake s-some cookies to snack on,” that’s more like bobby behaviour. “b-but then i f-fell, um. fell asleep b-before they’d c-cooled down and… and n-now i h-have some l-left and… um. wouldyoulikeone? or t-two…” the last part comes out in a rush, anxiety spiking and forcing the stuttered words to escape at a hurried pace and end his painful attempts at explaining himself. sharing food is how bobby shows affection, and his cheeks are heating up, flushing a peachy pink hue that has him ducking his head a little to try and hide it.
Xand smiled softly, and took the cookies from Bobby’s outstretched hand. “You know I can never resist your baking.” But as they realized what he had said, their eyebrows drew together in concern. “Everything alright? You’re not usually the type to have restless nights...” They trailed off, voice soft and their free hand hovering over Bobby’s shoulder, waiting for the signal that he was okay with being touched.
“You should pass that on then - joggers have been going off-path to avoid my monster here,” Mattie laughed. “It’s fine though, seriously, I totally get it. Besides, if I really had a problem with people staring, I’d hide out in my apartment, ‘cause really, I can’t blame them.” He rolled his eyes at his own comment and shrugged.
Retracting their hand, but putting it back when the dog whimpered, they chuckled. “These little guys get such a bad rep, I feel bad. They’re the sweetest little babies if you treat them right. Speaking of babies, whose this little one?” They nodded at the child in his lap, smiling. “Well someone’s confident. Just don’t go over board, and I think we’ll be just fine. I’m Xand, by the way. And you are?”
Ezra chewed on his thumbnail, glancing down at his tattered journal. He didn’t run into other tattoo artists often. It was kind of refreshing. Although he was new to it, and it was more of a hobby for him. “Oh. Thanks.” He said with a faint blush, dropping his hand and smiling a little. “I’m Ezra.” He nodded a little and fiddled with his hands. “You?” It was so hard to make small conversation, but he was honestly trying..
Xand smiled, turning their attention fully to Ezra. “No problem, its the truth after all. I’m Xand, it’s always nice to meet another artist around here.” Glancing down at their work, a tattoo of a butterfly on a rose, they realized they still hadn’t figured out how to get it just right. They supposed it wouldn’t hurt to ask Ezra. Turning the sketch so it faced him fully, they pointed to the empty space beside around the rose. “Hey, out of curiosity, do you think that leaves would look better around the edges, or vines? This empty space is bothering me, and it would be nice to get a second opinion.”
Ezra simply nodded before taking a seat, setting his things down on the table. His journal littered with drawings on the cover was on the top of his pile, and he pulled the pen attached to it off. He noticed the other’s sketches and eyed them with interest, noting they were pretty good. Ez tilted his head slightly before gesturing to the drawings. “Those are good.” He said before blushing at how utterly stupid he sounded.
Xand smiled at his comment. “Thanks. I just hope the client likes it, after all, they’re going to have it on their body for quite a while.” They noticed the journal littered with drawings, and nodded towards it. “You’re pretty good too. Remind me of when I first started out, a few years ago. What’s your name?”
The coffee shop was buzzing, currently in the busy hours of the morning. Ezra always came here in the mornings. He liked the hustle and bustle, and the little table in the corner of the room was almost always open. So like nearly every morning, he walked into the coffee shop, his arms full of books and journals. He made his way toward the far end of the room only to see his usual spot was occupied, and he frowned in disappointment. There only seemed to be one spot he could take, a long table close by with only one person seated there. So he walked over, biting his lower lip. He gestured to the spot at the far, opposite end of the table. “Alright if I sit here?” He asked in his thick accent, voice quiet.
Xand had been in the coffee shop for a few hours now, not having any appointment scheduled until noon, and people didn’t usually come in without one until the afternoon. Having had their fix of coffee (cafe vanilla frap with extra whip and an extra pump of espresso) for the morning, they had settled themselves into the nearest empty table, popped one earbud in, and began sketching tattoo ideas. Glancing up at the sounds of another’s voice, they set their pencil down and nodded. “Feel free to move any of the supplies if you need more room. I’m not usually at this big a table, and I figured I’d enjoy the extra space.”
“Look, okay, I know he looks like the scariest mother fucker in the park, but I promise that’s just you giving in to all the pit bull stereotypes. Trust me, the baby is gonna do more harm than the dog. You can pet him if you want, no need to just stare.” Mattie scooped up the infant, interrupting her plans to escape the blanket and getting some giggles out of her, plopping her back in his lap and handing her the plastic keys he’d been playing with himself a moment ago. “Unless you were starring at me, in which case, hi, but also, creepy.”
“Aw, I know he wouldn’t hurt anyone. Not with a face like that!” Xand smiled, offering their hand for the dog to sniff, before scratching him behind the ears. Looking back up to the man with the baby in his lap, they chuckled. “Sorry if I freaked you out, I’m so used to staring at tattoos for so long, I tend to stare at others things too, even outside of work.” They rubbed the back of their neck sheepishly.
