hi anna!! i don't know if you know the answer to this question, but i figured if you don't, hopefully one of your followers will. any idea how similar arabic and hebrew are? i wanna learn hebrew, but it just seems so daunting. i already speak/read/write arabic, so i'm kinda hoping that maybe at least the general idea will be similar? fingers crossed. thank you for your help!!
i think @etrogim @tzionut-gizanut would know way more than me
You know how Arabic has a 3 letter root structure, from which most words are formed? Hebrew has one, too and many of the roots are the same bc they come from Aramic. Some grammar and structure stuff is similar too
yeah the verb thing we also have very similar conjugations sometimes the similarities are confusing, when i was studying i had the hardest time with gendered nouns because the system is almost the same, but each noun’s assigned gender isn’t necessarily the same in each language lol also arabic alphabet is abjad like hebrew, and it has a system like niqqud - tashkil. i’d say the most striking difference is that standard arabic retains consonants that standard modern hebrew lost - our khet is now the same sounds as khaf (where in arabic the former is gluttoral), same with ayin/alef (and even he/alef sometimes lol), th/t, q/k… reish was originally gh and was replaced by a sorta-rolling r idk why. so the arabic alphabet is faithful to how standard arabic sounds, and in hebrew we have duplicate letters lol.
edit: forgot to mention but on the vocabulary front we also have a lot of the same roots pronounced with slight differences (like b.r.k as the root for blessing, 7.k.m for wisdom), there’s a lot of borrowed words (early ashkenazi colonizers borrowed a bit from palestinian arabic but the majority are a result of arabic-speaking mizrahim influencing the language… and palestinians borrowed the word for checkpoint apparently), and there are some false friends (lechem - bread in hebrew, meat in arabic, or medina - state in hebrew, city in arabic)
