X listened with both his eyes and ears as she asked questions and spoke to him. âWell what I want you to do is get this binge over and done with so we can get back to work.â He spoke a certain authority, it wasnât commanding like Elâs but his tone and body language almost demanded compliance.
AsâŠ
Kayni sat down with her back to the wall and looked around as he spoke. When he told her to put the comm on, she looked down at it for a moment. Docâs comm. She tried putting in, rather clumsily, flipping her long braid out of the way. In the end she held the device to her ear while he spoke.
"Right. I get all that secrets and intel. And as far as being where Iâm needed, well as you know my plate is pretty clear from here on out⊠For the gods sake will you help me with this damn comm?" She fumbled with it for a moment before nearly dropping it. "Let me guess. Goblin made gadgets?" She heard a chuckle over the comm, though X wasnât laughing. "Who was that?"
X shook his head as she destroyed what little composure she had gained in the time it took them to find and sit at a table. He reached over and expertly snatched the comm and slid it into her ear canal in one fluid movement. As he returned his butt to to the chair he shook his head once more in disregard. "Ask them." He said aloud not over the comm and then relaxed a bit in his chair to watch her. His look was appraising as it moved up and down her form. He wasn't being rude or disrespectful he was sizing up what he and the boys had to work with to get her in shape for field work.Â
Bar hopping to break the Ice
X listened with both his eyes and ears as she asked questions and spoke to him. "Well what I want you to do is get this binge over and done with so we can get back to work." He spoke a certain authority, it wasn't commanding like El's but his tone and body language almost demanded compliance.Â
As he followed her into the tavern and to the back table he watched her steps, the way she walked the way her body moved and he smiled. Thinking about how hard it will be to break these horrible habits of hers. When he settled down at the table he finally motioned for her to put the ear piece in. When she did he spoke to her through the comm unit.
"You need to be ready at a moments notice to respond to this channel. We don't always need operatives but when we do, we expect you to show up. As to what we do. Well unofficially were are in the information and asset liquidation business, mostly in the defense of Quel'thalas, but with El's taking the lead, we have spread out tendrils to all of Azeroth. There really isn't anything officially, we don't exist anywhere else."
(This rp takes place immediately following Elâs letter and his leaving the Horde.)
El groaned as Kayni and X had both landed on him. He rolled quickly and as X jumped off El pushed Kayni, gently off of him so he could stand. The aged knight stood up and dusted himself off. His eyes focused on herâŠ
Kayni stood and stared at him blankly. âTrust? You speak of TRUST? Where was your trust when the idea of going to the Alliance came to your head? Where was your trust when instead of speaking to ME you wrote a note for all to read⊠for all to know you were walking away from me?â She clenched her fists at her side, ignoring their surroundings and all other things but the golden knight. âWhat did you think Doc? That you could write me a few lines on a piece of paper and I would stop loving you? Stop caring what happened to you? How was I supposed to know that any of this honestly came from you? You could have been bewitched for all I knew⊠â She sighs and drops her shoulders her hands unclenching. âYou want me to trust you⊠but the truth is⊠you do not trust me eitherâŠâ She turned away from  him for a moment, trying to collect herself. Sheâd done her crying,  and now that she had her quarry in front of her,  finally, she did not wish to break down again. âYou could have come to me⊠you could have told me. I may not have liked it⊠but at least I could have had some answers⊠not⊠a noteâŠâ She puts a hand on the closest wall to her and leans against it, suddenly tired. âI love you⊠and I want you to be happy⊠to be at peace⊠you should have trusted me as you wish me to trust you.â
El frowned as she unleashed all her anger and frustration upon him. He knew this would happen if he ever had a chance to speak to her. So he listened to it all and took all she had to give him, all she had been holding in. He shook his head slowly at times wanting her to know he was hearing what she was saying. When she was finished he stepped forward and closed the distance between them. Placing his hand on her back he remained silent letting her feel him close.Â
"Kayni. There is no easy way to explain my decision. It has nothing to do with you or with my feelings for you. Please do not think that. I didnât speak to you because it would affect my resolve. I couldnât stand to see you hurt and I wouldnât be able to do what needed to be done." Â He slid his hand up her back to her shoulder and then gently urged her to turn around and face him.Â
"I never wanted to hurt you. I never wanted to cause you any pain. This was a decision I had to make on my own and I wanted to avoid as much pain as I could for everyone. Even you." He let his hand move to her her neck and then her jaw, cupping it lovingly, if she allowed this heâd stare into her eyes. "You have to believe me when I say this is as painful for me as it is for you. Please do not think yourself the only one in pain."Â He caressed her cheek softly with his thumb as he fell silent to allow her a chance to speak.
Kayni listened and remained silent for several moments. And then the dam broke. She laid her hand over his cheek and cried, still not meeting his eyes. Tears streamed down her cheek with the realization that this would be the last time they spoke, the last time he would be this close to her again. She finally looked up at him, and she spoke, her voice choked with tears. âWe were going to be so happy togetherâŠâ This brought about more tears.
She thought about everything that had led up to their first meeting, loneliness, fear, pain, both physical and emotional. All of that was nothing compared to this moment.
Kayni looked up at him, noting the changes in the few brief weeks that theyâd been apart. He looked stronger, even younger, but he also didnât have that haunted look that had plagued him for so long. Part of her knew that with enough tears and enough talking, she could wear him down and he would probably come home. She also knew that he would be miserable and she would regret it. She had to let him go, if that was his wish.
"I still donât understand why you made the decision you made Doc, but it isnât for me to understand, is it? The only thing I can do is accept it. But you canât ask me to move on. I wonât do it. You were the brightest part of my life. You were there when I most needed you. There isnât a man alive that can replace you El, Iâm not going to try and fool myself into thinking so." She lifted her eyes again to look up at his beautiful face, to memorize every line, every scar, and keep the vision close to her. "What happens now Doc?"
El was even more heart broken as the young woman cried and spoke so sadly in his hands. HE shook his head or nodded to each point she made. She was right and he knew thereâd be no way sheâd understand. But still she deserved at least his best in the form of a reason. Â He took a deep steadying breath, trying to remain strong for her, trying to remain collected. When he exhaled slowly he took another deep breath and spoke.
"We would have been happy, so happy, my love. But I wouldnât have been truly happy. Not because of you, not because of our future or even our love. But because I am haunted by the past, I thought I found the answer in our love. I thought if I married you and had a family, that perhaps that would ease the regret, pain and guilt of my past, or in the very least cover it up forever. I was wrong and even selfish to do that to you, to put that weight on your beautiful young shoulders. I love you Kayni, I will always love you, those feelings were never misplaced and will never be forgotten." He paused, he knew he was going to ramble on and on as he always did, but he needed her to at least understand his point so she could move on.
"I left everything behind including you. It was the hardest thing I have ever done. I knew that if I stayed I would never be able to let go of everything I have suffered. Your family may call me a traitor, they may call me whatever they wish. I only care about you and your opinion of me." He moved his head to look her in the eyes once more.Â
"I love you. I love you so much. Please do not close yourself off. I know it hurts, I hurt too. But I want you to live and closing yourself off from the world and from others is not going to help you. I meant what I said in the letter. I want you to find love, I want you to have a family. You deserve that, and if you can learn one thing from this old ragged elf it is this, do not let your past haunt you. Let it go, however you can. Find a way to rid yourself of any emotion attached to it. Memories are very powerful and I failed at this for many years and only now am addressing them, donât wait like I did." He fell silent once more, he wasnât sure what else he could say, he wasnât ready to let her go, so he held her face and gave her a chance to speak.
Kayni watched him as he spoke, each word like a dagger in her heart at his own misery. She was torn.
"I donât want to go Doc. I donât want to leave you." She slipped her arms around him, laying her cheek on his chest. She knew she couldnât stay with him. Her father was probably ready to wage war with the SI. "Itâs so hard to let go. I donât think that Iâm strong enough."
She held him for a long time, dreading having him away from her for good this time.
El wrapped her in his arms and held her to his chest. He let her stay there as long as she needed. His hand moved to her hair and head and stroked there gently, soothingly, while his other moved over her back.
"You are that strong. trust me. I know you are, I rebuilt you remember. I know every fiber of your being from the inside out." The thought of the days when he first met her made him smile. he was astonished though, not one thought of blood or the cult crept in as it used to do. he held her tightly. "If your father wants war then he will have it. There is really nothing that can be done." He glanced over at X who was standing idly at the wall. Golden eyes met green ones and the old friend stared at each other for some time.
When she finally broke the embrace heâd quickly look back at her. âI donât want you to go either, but it is for the best. For the both of us. You for your familyâs sake and me for my own.â He smiled at her letting his hand run over her cheek as he stepped away from her.Â
She knew he spoke the truth but it didnât help. When he stepped away, she hesitated for a brief moment before moving back to him, standing on her toes, ignoring the clash of their armor as she kissed him one final time. Her arms snaked around his neck and she poured every intense feeling into that kiss; their final goodbye.
In that kiss was forgiveness and understanding and a promise that she would do her best to be the woman he helped create, the woman he wished her to be. She didnât know if she would ever see him again, she had hope, but she also knew that no matter where she went or what she did, he would be there in some way, watching over her.
He returned the gesture with as much passion that she showed him. Squeezing her tightly to his chest he held her up so they could enjoy their last kiss longer. When it finally broke he set her down on her feet and then smiled touching her cheek with a longing sheâd not seen recently, but he turned to X.
He stared long and hard at the man, the man who had served with Elhanan since Northrend. Helios nodded once after a long moment of silence before turning back to Kayni. âI will always love you.â He said softly and then turned his back and walked out of the building.
Kayni takes a step to follow as he leaves the building, but she stops herself. She was trembling head to toe with the effort not to chase after him. She took several deep breaths, trying to pull herself together, and stop her heart from racing. She knew she had a long road ahead of her to move on as he wished.
After several long moments, she lifted her head and looked across the room at X. âIt seems that I am in need of an escort home.â Her voice was hoarse and low, her throat nearly closing on her. Using the wall to lean on and hold herself upright, she prepared to do the hardest thing she ever had in her young life, and walk away as the man she lived wished her to do.
X raised a brow and then reached up to remove his mask so she could see his face as he spoke. He pushed himself from the wall and moved towards her. As he did he nodded. âI will always take care of you.â He reached into his leathers and retrieved a small ear piece and gave it to her. âThis is Heliosâs comm. If you choose to accept it you will effectively be joining the SI. While not official, you will still be privy to the workings and the coming and goings of all of us. This is not something you should take lightly. Think about your family and friends and how this will affect them.â X left his hand outstretched to her. âI shouldnât tell you this, but Helios would have wanted you to be a part of it. But please think heavily on the decision.â
Kayni looked at the comm in his outstretched hand. Joining the SI would certainly have an effect on her family, especially given recent events. She hesitates a moment, and then reaches for it. âWould I be able to speak to El?â She wasnât very hopeful of that, but she took the comm anyway.
A chance to help carry on Docâs legacy, his familyâs work. She would take it, even if it would never lead seeing El again.
She raises her chin and looks at X, determined and ready to move forward.
"All right⊠Where do we start?"
X shook his head. âNo. With you accepting it, he no longer has the comm, so he will not be listening or speaking on it. We will no longer have any contact with Helios, he has left strict orders and the SI will follow them.â He let her take the comm and smiled. âNow we drink away your sorrows all the way home. And beyond that.. you  just listen for us on the comm. Youâll know when it is time.â With that he took a deep breath and made for the door. âNow lets see where Archmage put us.âÂ
When he stepped out of the door they found themselves in Dalaran. He chuckled. âThat figures.â Turning to face Kayni he continued to smile, âShall we start here or wait till we get back to the mainland?â
Kayni looks down at the comm, running her thumb over it. âOh⊠You meant it was literally his. So⊠Whose in charge now? A girl should know who sheâs answering to.â She stepped out into Dalaran, looking around for a moment. âI say we hit every tavern from here to the coast and stock up for the sail home⊠And then continue once we hit land. Maybe if I get drunk enough, Iâll stop thinking about himâŠâ
She smiled at X and moved off to seek out their first tavern.
X nodded and followed her to the nearest tavern. "I am in charge now." he said as he caught up and fell in step with her. Â "Unless of course Silver shows up. But for now it it me you will be answering too." His gaze shifted from her to the streets and back to her as the silence took over their small space. He didn't have a clue as to what he would do with her now that she was in the SI, she had no training, no experience and most of all she was the boss's former lady. IT made for a special case and a very large conundrum.

Kayni paused a moment, and looked at the man speaking. âYou decided to show up after all.â She sheathed her swords and walked over to him, looking up at him as she neared. âI was coming home.â She was no less angry at the situation, but his presence had certainly mellowed her tone. âI was angry,...
The man's words resonated with X and even as he stood near Kayni he'd not back down, pride and honor were qualities of the SI and even with the spark of rage from the insults pointed towards Helios, X rested assured and even offered the man a smirk. As he did the wind gusted through the clearing again, X knew what was there what was coming and the masked man had played right into the dramatic effect.
Behind X a small arcane hole opened, flickering bigger and bigger as it expanded. The image of Dalaran appeared in the now man-sized portal. It would be easy for X to grab Kayni and pull her into the portal but he stood still his cold emotionless eyes bearing into the masked man's. From the portal stepped an elf in blue and gold armor, The large golden shield of the Shattered Sun Offensive and the huge one handed hammer gripped in his other hand, radiated holy light. As the Elven Paladin finally materialized behind the X the other hidden SI operatives all appeared, materializing from thin air.Â
There was at least two for each of the masked men. If Lac was watching she'd recognize some from among the countless men and women in the clearing now. Archmage Raistilin Ravenwind, Ambasador for the SI to the Magistry. She'd also recognize Jonathan Silverkin, commander of the SI militia. Even the Spellbreaker Jared Diracc was there, master of arms for the SI. There was an armored monk that would be unfamiliar but given his soft features she'd easily discern he was a Sunsworn, next to him was a woman with the same unfamiliar features, the twins, Heir and Heiress to the Sunsworn line. Malichi Lightsorrow was there also, the only Death Knight to ever earn a spot in the SI. There were also many other nameless SI operatives all with weapons readied but lowered. They all waited for Helios's command, who in fact was the paladin that stood behind X.
El didn't bother speaking to Kayni, he didn't even look at her, yet. When he spoke it was  hard, strong and confident. "You will leave this place, now!" The fel in his golden eyes was still strong, even though he returned to his Quel'dorei roots, the years of fel taint could not be removed in just a few days. "There will be no more discussing, you can tell Lacryma that I will take care of Kayni and she will be returned to SIlvermoon promptly. This has gone on long enough. DO NOT test me in this because you will fail. If you have a problem with that you can die here." The former Blood Knight stood tall and even in his blue and golds was not to be mistaken for an alliance lap dog, the pride of the elven race radiated from his with his golden aura, usually calm and soothing, but in his present state, it burned and raged, it's nature revealing it's master's intention if he was questioned. "Now you decide." With that all SI operatives growled in a simultaneous chord as they dropped to offensive stances brandishing their weapons.Â
Kayni leveled her gaze at him. âYouâre a real bitch you know that?â She turned her head toward X. âNothing? Really? I thought you were supposed to be keeping watch over me? You and me, versus what⊠six? Thatâs what I call a good time.â She looked back at those waiting to haul her in. âI am getting...
X watched the entire ordeal for a a few long moments, appearing to obey these people. Arms crossed on his chest he shrugged at Kayni, but she'd see a certain gleam in the the young elf's eye. As she moved to Vod and grabbed up her swords. He laughed aloud, very very loud, almost to the point of annoyance, drawing the attention of everyone, especially the one taunting the young woman. When he stopped his gaze was leveled at Kayni.
Reaching up he lifted his face mask up over his nose concealing the bottom half of his face from her. "I would recommend you give the woman her paper, now." The voice was dark, cold and far stronger than it should have been from such a seemingly young elf. He had uncrossed his arms and they rested intentionally on the hilts of his weapons. "We are not leaving until you give her what belongs to her. And if you want to push me, then do so, but be warned...." His white hair was trimmed short but as an unseen wind picked up around the group it rustled the short locks a bit. "You choose, now!" He demanded as he moved expertly, his foot work was flawless, he was not a novice and from the glare in his eye he was not foreign to this field, this kind of thing was familiar ground for him and the Spymaster was ready.
Kayni frown ed and eyed him for a moment. âXavear, you really donât have to go through the trouble. I gave you my word that I would return home and I intend to. I am sure there are other ways of tracking me to make sure. Besides which⊠I intend to hit every pub between here and the hinterlands,...
X shook his head. "I am not wanting to accompany you because I am watching you still. I want to accompany you because I want too. And drinking is fine by me, I enjoy a good drink or hundred. I don't believe you can ever be ugly, even as a drunk." He was flirting, but it was subtle she might miss it. However, his intentions about joining her were innocent and genuine.Â
As she asked about her wolf he shook his head once more. "He'll be up soon and be good as new. The alliance patrols don't make it this far, that is why I planned to ambush you here. So don't worry about tha--" He stopped as she bolted past him and spun to look at her, but didn't act. He just raised a brow in shock, Is she really going to try and run again? he though to himself as he let out a heavy sigh.Â
Kayni stepped back awkwardly, wiping the tears roughly from her cheeks. She sensed a change, maybe a trickle of magic, but magic was something foreign to her and she let it pass without comment. She looked at his extended hand for a moment before reaching out hesitantly to take it. The man,...
X gave her hand a reassuring shake and then released it. When she went to pick up her stuff her helped, handing her odds and ends from here and there. As she spoke he stopped. "It's not like that.at all. This wasn't a job. This was a favor and furthermore, it was one I was offered and I accepted of my own volition." He handed her a few of her things. "Do not be so hard on yourself. Helios was very happy with you, I know this because he told me so. His decision has nothing to do with you, it's his demons that drive this chapter." He reached out slowly and hesitantly to grab her bicep, he'd grip it firmly, not in a menacing or threatening way but just to affirm his words. "He loves you, very very much, sometimes in life the demons are too much and leaving is the only option. Please, understand that about Helios. While it hurts, you know him enough that he'd never do anything to hurt you intentionally. This was for both of you, even if it doesn't feel like it."
X stepped away and shook his head. "Can I travel with you? I.. I am not on the job, just as a friend?" He asked with that boyish embarrassed look, his age once more showing through.Â
Kayni was still, and she listened, though every word cut her like a dagger. Doc was not a bad guy, never had been. Not in her knowing anyway. She loved him, and wanted him near. She needed his comfort. She bit her lip hard and clenched her fists tightly as the tears built behind her closed...
X struggled internally with the sudden loss of control, over the comm to the SI he screamed and yelled at the unknown SI operative that was now controlling the young Spymaster. The hug lasted for a long while and the longer i lasted the more X felt bad for the woman, she might have pissed him off royally in the past few minutes but he was not a bad guy either. he woman's tears made him weak, weakened his resolve and soon the mind control was not holding her it was X. He gripped her snugly, knowing how bad she hurt how bad she felt.Â
When the time to split came to, he released her reluctantly, there was sorrow on his face. "I am sorry Kayni. I really am." The voice wasn't Archmage's and some unknown priest's magic. It was X. "I am so sorry. This happened all the wrong ways, and I feel El would not be very happy with either of us. I should have never berated you or made you feel bad. You feel bad enough already." The young Elf aged quite a lot in that short time and his maturity began to shine through. "I know what you are going through.Let me help you, please. I know I don't' deserve it and I know we don't' get a second chance at a first impression, but I won't hold yours against you if you won't hold mine against me." He extended his hand to her. "Xavear." He introduced himself with a boyish smile.Â
Kayni halted her steps, skidding a bit on the loose gravel and dirt. âHonor his last words?â She turned her head to look over her shoulder. âHis last words?â She turned fully and threw down the packs, reaching into her steel chest piece and withdrawing the small corked vial. She yanks the chain,...
X listened once more and strolled towards her. His eyes were not menacing and he wasn't brandishing a threat anymore it was understanding and empathy that he carried with him in his walk towards the raging woman. "Those were not his last words..." The tone and his body language was more like someone else than X at the moment.
X stopped and shook his head. "Are all women so dense?" He asked aloud but the kind expression returned to his face quickly as he spoke again to Kayni. "You make him sound like such a bad guy, do you not think he feels he is just as much a victim of his own decisions? Do you not think he is suffering too? Suffering even more knowing that you are acting like this?" The soft and understanding tone continued as X inched closer to her. "Why do you focus on words that were never written? Why do you let yourself feel like you are the only one hurting and that no one understands you? Think about who Elhanan is. Think hard and think long. Do you think he would do anything without thinking through without knowing exactly what he was doing?"
X shook his head once more. "You don't even really know him do you?" The snarky comment was interrupted as the understanding tone came back. "He would never intentionally hurt you or anyone, but if he had to leave he did so for a good reason and he wouldn't lie or be deceitful about it. Stop looking into things only to make yourself hurt worse. Be hurt, be brokenhearted but live as he did and do not let it break you, grow from it. You know that's what he'd want." X was close enough to grab her now and he did just that, but it wasn't a constricting or and menacing grapple, he held her, hugged her close and kept her safe in his dyed leather armored arms and chest. He'd not let her go, no matter how hard she struggled, he'd hold her fast.
Kayni shook her head, his words like angry ice water down her spine. âYou are a real asshole⊠you know that? One moment you rub it in that you still get to speak with him, that you have contact. And then you tell me you want to help me?â She throws her arms into the air with an exasperated,...
"Fel! Are all women so stupid!? Sheesh. Good riddance, I will let him know that you are being uncooperative. And that you 'cared' so much that you wouldn't even let anyone help you. That you cared so much for him that you wouldn't even honor his last words to you and what he taught you in your short time together." The words came like they would have from Elhanan himself, almost like X was reading something directly from El.Â
If she continued, X would let her pack up and he'd let her go, he'd let her get out of sight, not really as Archmage was still tracking her, But she'd feel like she's lost him, then he'd vanish and follow her anyways. "I made a promise." He would follow her at a safe distance never letting her out of sight.Â
Kayni glared at him. âYou unbelievable prick. How is it that I am the only one that gives a damn that he is going to the enemy? How is it that I am the only one that is concerned at all? You call yourself his brother⊠but you donât even care that heâs sitting in an alliance city. What happens one...
"You are by far the dumbest most hard headed person. Fel!" X placed a hand on his forehead and shook his head in exasperation. "First thing, you incompetent woman, if he made the decision to go, it wasn't easy, as he said in the letter. If he went and was not welcome, why would I still be hearing from him when I report back to him how inappropriate you are being over all this. You are seriously the most irrational person I have ever met and in my line of work that is a huge insult." X was getting fed up, his fingers twitched around the blowgun tube and he was contemplating beating her with it until she was unconscious.
He didn't act on it though. In reality he felt for her, even if he didn't agree with how she was acting. He knew how it felt to lose someone so close and wanting to know why. He sighed heavily. "One more word about Helios's honor or mine and you can spend the night in that pit. I am trying to help you see reason. I could have just shot you with your wolf and carried you back to a cell to let you chill until you are sober and coherent enough to listen to me, but I didn't I am reasoning with you in a nonthreatening manner." X crossed his arms once more still holding the blowgun. "Are you done now? Are you going to be reasonable so perhaps we can help you?" The change in tactic was nothing for the Spymaster he was used to adapting to situation beyond his control and making it work out.
Kayni crossed her arms, taking in the situation for a moment before speaking.
"My family is free to try and stop me if they choose, neither of them are ignorant enough to waltz into the human city and neither am I. Your âbrotherâ was supposed to be my husband. I think I deserve a real...
X crossed his arms and just studied her closely as she ranted and raved. Tapping a foot impatiently he shook his head every now and then to let her know he was hearing what she said and disagreed with her. When she finally finished he dramatically took a deep breath and exhaled it to mock her.Â
"Got that out of your system, feel any better now?" X stepped forward towards her the only thing he had in his hand was the blowgun tube. "I donât care who you think you are or what you think you deserve. But you have to understand just a few things. One, you will not talk down or otherwise insult Helios in my presence, this included implied sarcasm. Be warned you are worth very little to me in comparison to the relationship I have with him. Second, if you stopped acting like a complete idiot and took a breath perhaps there is a more, whats the word.. Safer way of getting your answers. Third, you are a selfish spoiled little brat and I have it in my right mind to knock the self centered part right out of you." X was within striking distance and if they had planned properly had her stuck between the pitfall and himself. "Your family has tried repeatedly to help you cope, aid you in healing and even a stranger tried and your hardheaded, selfish brat of a mind is too blind to see it. Why donât you grow up and act like an adult." X might have had a decade on her in age, he was fairly young too, so like he had room to talk.
