For many people growing up in a funeral home would be something kind of scary. But for the children of the Grave’s family, it was just part of their life. To them, it was normal and the way everyone else grew up, seemed to be different. For Hutch, he felt very calm in a macabre sort of situation. However, he wasn’t a very morbid person. Hutch was the kind of person who loved the more cheerful and whimsical side of things when it came to life. Maybe it was because they grew up in such an unconventional way that it made him seek out the things that made him feel joy? He loved music, he loved dancing, he loved reading, and drawing. He was a very artistic person who then grew up as someone who also embalmed bodies in the basement of his family’s house where they also conducted business.
As the second youngest of his siblings, Hutch realized that most of them didn’t want to continue the family business. However, Hutch didn’t feel very much pressure in taking up the mantle. For him, it was just something that was part of his everyday life. He didn’t know if he wanted to do anything else because there was a part of him that was worried that when his parents retired no one else would want to take over. The only other person who really seemed to want to take part in things was his sister Shiloh. However, to anyone who knew the family, the duo being a united front was not surprising.
Hutch and Shiloh were very close even though they had quite a big age gap between them. Whenever Hutch wanted to go and do something, his parents would always have Shiloh tag along. Understandably not every teenager wanted to hang out with their kid sister, but Hutch didn’t mind. He loved being a big brother and considering he was the little brother to most of his family; it was nice to be able to be the big sibling. Even as adults, he still finds himself feeling closest to Shiloh not just because they’re the two trying to run a funeral home.
Not everything is perfect though in hutch’s life. One aspect where he finds himself always struggling is meeting new people. He doesn’t like to talk about work because in the past, it had scared potential boyfriends away, and he hasn’t had many long lasting relationships. If a hook up would happen, he would never want it to be at his home. No one wants to leave a house and find out that there is a mortuary down the hall. As a result, Hutch can be a little bit awkward. He doesn’t talk to a lot of people and comes off a bit neurotic at times. He tries his hardest to make friends or to meet guys, but inevitably the question of ‘what do you do for a living’ comes up. It’s not an easy one to answer and more than once him trying to not say too much has made people assume that he’s speaking code like he’s in a gangster movie. That has created more problems also because then people start to make assumptions about him.
At times that’s made him overcompensate in very strange ways like making Jazz hands when he’s talking to customers to try to lighten the mood. Or blasting pop music when he is working on bodies to prepare for funerals. It’s behavior like that; that only makes people assume he’s more morbid than he is. He’s just very awkward at navigating the funeral home since their parents had retired.
The reality is Hutch is a normal guy with a very peculiar job. Beneath the initial strangeness of his work lies someone who is an absolute sweetheart. He loves people tremendously, and he’s just trying to find those who won’t be bothered by his job. If you need him, he might find him singing at the top of his lungs in the basement.
