So without further ado, I give you my little writing project.
Letting Down Walls
The city hums below in that usual way only New York could provide. Always moving, people too absorbed in their own world to ever really notice anything else going on. Traffic noise echoed through the streets, sirens somewhere in the distance. The source not seen through the tall structures of buildings that made up the city.
Amongst it all, Raphael stood on the rooftop of Sasha's apartment, brooding with his arms crossed after what was another intense fight with Leo. He hadn't meant to have come back here, he hadn't really even realized that he ended up here until he showed up at her apartment rooftop. Probably wasn't the most wise idea after he stormed out of the lair leaving you back there.
He hadn't meant to leave her there, but he also couldn't stay stuck down there with Leo and his smug, arrogant attitude or the feeling everyone looking at him saw him as the problemâŠlike they always did.
The rooftop door creaked open slowly, he didn't turn around. He let out a sigh, those red bandana tails catching in the wind as he heard those familiar boots steps approaching him.
"Shoulda figured," He mutters, "You always track me down."
There wasn't any bite to his words, at least not yet. But you could feel the tension simmering within him just under the surface.
"RaphâŠ" Sasha started before he cut her off.
"Lemme guess," His voice was flat as his shoulders squared a little from where he stood. "Leo didn't mean it like that."
There it was, the first spark of tension boiling over. He was bracing for her to give him the same old speech he heard from Leo at least a thousand times in his lifetimeâŠif not more.
"Raph that's not what I'm-" She tried to say before he cut her off again.
"Or maybe I'm just too 'reactive.' Too 'reckless.'" A humorless huff escaped him with a small shake of his head. "That it? Could've saved you a trip if that's all you came to tell me." He turned his head slightly to glance back at her out of his peripheral vision.
There was that defensive nature. His armor that hid everything underneath. All the hurt, the fear that maybeâŠthey could be right about him.
"For fuck sake would you let me fuckin' talk?" Sasha snapped, irritation having rose in her voice. "One, don't put words in my mouth." She pointed at him, her icy blue eyes holding that burning intensity that they always did when she was getting pissed. "You left before I could even say anythin'."
His head whipped around to lock eyes with her the second she gave him push back. There was that shift in his eyes, the guy who felt cornered when she didn't just take his shit.
"I didn't need to hear the rest," He shot back, those amber eyes narrowing. "I've heard it before." His arms dropped from their crossed position. His hands flexing at his sidesânot as a threat but just charged and not having anywhere for that building energy, that anger to go.
"Same as before, Leo waltzes in. Throws around some words about teamwork, responsibilityâand then suddenly I'm the damn problem." His voice hardened, that always being an old wound that could never fully close. "Same story, different year."
"Raph I never said you were the problem." She crossed her arms over her chest, the muscle in her jaw twitched as she was using all the strength she had in her not to snap completely. He did this every time, every time the world got too much for him or something or someone pissed him off. He would push her away. But to her, with her long line of hurtâŠof abuse she didn't just take it as him pushing her away, she thought it was a sign that he too was getting sick of her like everyone else that came before him in her life.
"Don't give me that shit." He snapped, taking a step closerânot aggressive but it was intense. The kind of intensity of someone who feels like they're about to be replaced.
"You think I didn't see it?" he continued, quieter but his words were sharp. "The way you looked at him. Like maybe he's got a point."
There it was, the wound that cut deeper. He could take Leo and his criticisms. That he had been doing his whole life. What hit him most is that he feared you might agree with him.
"If you're gonna tell me I screwed up, just spit it out." His voice lowered, rough around the edges. "Don't fuckin' dance around it."
"What you think you saw and what actually happened is two different fuckin' things." Her expression hardened, eyes glaring at him as her temper flared. "You shut me out every damn time the world seems to manage to piss you off!"
She began to pace the rooftop, looking like a caged animal. It was all she could do to keep herself from throwing punches at something. "Then, when I try to even get fuckin' close to you, ya pull this shit. Now you assume I'm picking sides!" She threw her hands up in frustration.
When she looked back at him she could see in his expression that the words had landed. The way he stiffened and she knew it wasn't because she was yelling at himâit was because she was right.
His hands curled into fists. They weren't at Sasha, never at her as that just wasn't his style. It was at himself. At the feeling that was crawling up his throat that he refused to name.
"I'm not shutâ" He starts, then stops jaw grinding as he was trying to find the words while he watched you pace. He knew her well enough she only did that when things really did get to her.
"I ain't assuming anything," He fired back, but it lacked that heat his words had only moments ago. "I just know how this goes."
"Bullshit." Sasha muttered under her breath, still amped up. "You said I agreed at him just by lookin' at him."
He took another step towards her when she snapped at him. "You think I don't see it? The way everyone looks at me when Leo talks? Like I'm some loose cannon that they all gotta manage." His chest rose and fell hard before he continued. "And yeah," he snapped his voice rising again, "when you stand there and don't say anything? Feels real damn similar."
He ran a hand over his head, there was a part that would have stopped him from saying the last part if he was more level headed..but that part couldn't be reached. His hurt was fully driving the bus now."You wanna get close? Then don't look at me like I'm the screw-up every time he opens his mouth."
"I wasn't!" she yelled louder than she meant to, her voice echoing off the concrete walls that surrounded them. In her anger she hadn't even realized her fist came out and slammed into the wall beside her.
"If I thought even for a second Raph you were such a fuck up, I wouldn't have even fuckin' bothered to chase you down all the way back here!" Her eyes were locked with his, her chest rose and fell hard. "Is that what you think? You think I really look at you like you're some lost cause?"
Raph had flinched hearing that hard smack of her fist against the wall, it wasn't really because of the sound. It was because he knew her well enough to know she didn't do that unless she was wound tight.
He stared at Sasha for a long moment, his breath heavy as suddenly the city noise seemed like it was a thousand miles away for the both of them.
"I dunno what you think," He shot back, his voice rough but it no longer held the sharpness that it had before. "You don't say it." He looked up at the skyline, letting out a small breath. "You just stand there, not sayin' nothing and I'm supposed to guess."
His jaw flexed again, but his eyes weren't hard anymore. If anything, they were tired. "You think I don't notice?" He muttered, "The way Leo talks. The way Splinter looks at him. Like he's the answer."
There was that bruise as old as he was. That Leo was always Splinter's favorite in his eyes. "And yeah," his voice dropped lower, almost grudgingly, " sometimes I think maybe you see it too."
There in his words was the truth. It wasn't that if you said he was a problemâŠit was the fear that she might be thinking it. He could handle everyone else looking at him like that. But not Sasha, that would be a wound he didn't think could heal if she ever looked at him that way.
"I ain't a lost cause," He continued, no longer being defensive, his words were more declarative now. Like he himself had to hear it out loud for it to be real. "But it gets real old feelin' like you're the guy that everybody has to rein in." He exhaled hard through his nose before he met her gaze. "And when you don't say anything?" He looked away for a moment. "Feels like you're with him."
"RaphâŠ" She let out a sigh as if she was trying to calm herself before she spoke. "I don't say nothin' cause you never let me get a word in without pushin' me away." Her voice was softer, her own gazed pulled away from him as if she herself was bracing for the worst.
What she didn't say in that moment was the real feelings, of how she felt every time he pushed her away that she felt it was only a matter of time before he too would grow tired of her like everyone else before himâŠand leave.
That was her fear, losing him. Someone she had finally come to trust more than she had trusted anyone before.
"You think I'm pushin' you away?" He spoke finally, quieter. Not sarcastic, or defensive just trying to process her words. He dragged a hand over his face, slowly.
"I ain't tryin' to Sash." There was the honesty, clumsy, raw. But that was the kind that Raph could muster. He took a step closer, trying to close that distance that felt like miles between them on that rooftop.
"When stuff gets loud down thereâŠ" He gestured to the street, as if he could point to his home beneath the surface. "My head's already loud. I'm not thinkin' about pushin' you out. I'm thinkin' about not losin' it." He swallowed hard, being uncomfortable was a sign he was choosing to be vulnerable with her. Something that he didn't do with just anyone.
"I justâ" He stopped, his jaw tightened again but this time it wasn't in anger. It was restraint. "I don't know how to stand there and not feel like I'm bein' judged. So I justâŠshut down before it starts."
Sasha let out another shaky breath. It wasn't lost on her the meaning for Raph to be honest with her. The rarity of him choosing to put himself in the open like this with someone. It meant more to her than words ever could.
"I know I go quiet," she muttered, looking down at her hands. The one that had connected with the wall she glanced over. Her knuckles were split and bleeding a little from the hit. But she didn't pull her gaze away as she spoke. "I go quiet, cause I don't wanna say the wrong thingâor give someone a reason to justâŠleave."
There is was that old fear, that past pain bubbling to the surface. That people before had up and left her. Leaving her with the impression she was always the one to blame when people she trusted, cared about just bailed on her.
Raph had seen the blood before her words had ever really caught up with him. "Damn it, SashaâŠ" He muttered under his breath. Not angry, just pained.
Then her words finally registered.
Give someone a reason to leave. That had hit somewhere old in him, his grip softened immediately.
"I ain't looking for a reason to leave," he spoke after a moment, voice low and steady. There was no edge, no armor. This was just Raph.
He had let out a slow breath, still holding her hand in his as if he had forgot to let go. "You think that's how this works? One wrong sentence and I'm out?" his brow ridges furrowed. "You really think I'm that shallow?" There was hurt thereânot the kind that would usually make him explode. The kind that had him wounded.
"Raph, no that's not what I meanâ" She whispered, trying to protest before he continued.
"I get loud. I get pissed. I storm off." He nodded once, owning the truth in it. "Yeah, I do that." He glanced down at her scraped knuckles before his eyes fell back on her face. Those icy blue eyes he had come to know so well. "But, I always come back."
That was another truth, one he stoked his claim on. It was important to him. Important that she knew that he wasn't just walking away.
He shifted a little closer, without even realizing he was doing it. "You go quiet 'cause you're scared I'll walk. I get loudâŠ'cause I'm scared you already did." he whispered. That being the symmetry between them.
He brought her hand up, his rough calloused fingers carefully inspecting the damage. There was a surprising amount of care in his touch for someone who had just had an episode of emotional detonation not even five minutes ago.
"You don't gotta edit yourself around me," he adds, his voice quiet. "Honestly? I'd rather hear the wrong thing than not hear you at all."
Her eyes flicked up to meet him for a moment, her expression softened a little. "I'm not used to that y'know, people sticking around." she muttered, letting out a shaky breath. "I'm more used to it being my fault that someone does leave."
That one had stopped him cold, because he understood that too well. Raph's grip on her hand tightened ever so slightlyânot enough to cause her any pain, just enough to anchor her there. As if that touch alone was enough to keep her from drifting back into that old reflex.
"That's not on you Sash" He started, exhaling through his nose. He looked away for a second, his jaw worked as if he was chewing on something heavy. "I grew up thinkin' I was the extra one. The hothead. The screw-up. The one that makes things harder."
He met Sasha's gaze, his eyes sharperânot angry. Intent.
"But that ain't how this works." His thumb brushed absentmindedly near her split knuckles. A motion he didn't realize he did half the time, but it was grounding. It grounded him just as much as it did Sasha.
"People leave for their own reasons," He continued. "Their own limits. Their own crap. That's not some curse that you're stuck carryin'."
He slowly closed that gap between them more, his head tilted closer to her.
"And if somebody walked 'cause you spoke your mind?" His voice was lower now. "Then they were never built to stand next to ya in the first place." There was a quiet conviction in his voice. It wasn't loud, or dramatic, just solid. Something that he meant wholeheartedly.
"I don't scare easy," he added, almost gruffly. "And you ain't gonna get rid of me by sayin' the wrong thing." His forehead had dipped slightly towards hersânot quite touching but it was close.
Her breath hitched slightly at his words. A sign they had landed where they were meant to. She let herself lean into his touch, her forehead coming to rest against his own.
"You ain't a loose cannon y'know," She murmured, her eyes half closed as she spoke. "You have more heart than most people in this city. I see it, even when sometimes you think I don't." Her eyes opened to look at him then. She wanted him to really hear her words. To know she meant them. "It's why you fight so hard. You care about people, you try to take the hits that most people wouldn't be able to take."
Her good hand came up to rest on his arm lightly. "Leo thinks everything can be solved with planning, strategy and order. And yeahâŠmost times they can." She sighed a little. "But not always. You understand that order doesn't always apply out here in the world. Sometimes that there just ain't a rule book to cover every scenario. You just gottaâŠdo what you feel is right."
Raph really listened. He never usually did praise well. Most times he would deflect it, shrug it off or turn it into some kind of joke or remark. Not this time.
His eyes closed briefly when she said she saw it, she saw him.
"I ain't tryin' to be chaos," he murmured. "I justâŠI see stuff goin' wrong and I move. I don't got time to write a five-step plan." He let out a shaky exhale as those words had hit closer to home than he would ever admit.
"It ain't about ego when I fight. It's about not lettin' people get hurt if I can help it." He swallowed, his throat worked, letting out a small self-aware huff. "Guess I don't always know how to explain that without soundin' life I'm just pissed at the world."
His forehead pressed firmly into hers. "But you see itâŠyou see me."
"YeahâŠI see you Tough Guy." She murmured, that nickname slipping out a little too easily. It was one that she called him once and she just stuck with it. "And I always will."
At that moment, the fight had been long forgotten. Who stood there now were two fighters, lost in their own world coming to an understanding between one another. Not everything quite figured out yet, but one thing was certain:
D-16 walked through the barracks, towards Shadowwingâs recharge pod. Avoiding Darkwingâs looming figure as he kept up the pace, he snuck up on the young femme heâd come to call conjux.
âHey Shadow- you awake?â He smiled and he peeked around the corner. It was late by all means, but he didnât want to miss out on spending the evening with her.
Sideswipe felt a slow grin forming on his face as he looked to her. His spark fluttered a little in anticipation on what was to come. "Oh I'm well aware~"
âGoodâŠâ Prism purred, kissing him as soon as they got into the elevator, rubbing his chest. âHope you donât have anything else planned tonight~â she whispered, kissing his neck.
âOh trust meâŠmy schedule is completely open tonight.â He vented as he hugged his arm around her waist. His engine revved slightly in response to her touch.

Sideswipe blinked, surprised she paid for him. âYou didnât have to do that you know.â He smiled slightly. âShould be me treating you to a drink after your day.â
âItâs his credits, heâs paying for this. A lot cheaper than therapy.â Prism chuckled and took a swig of her drink before coughing. It was a lot stronger than she expected.
âNoted.â She chuckled and followed him to the booth. âThis place is⊠different. I didnât expect there to be such a crowd here.â She smiled.
âMaccadamâs is always busy. Biggest spot this side of Iacon.â He grinned with a smile. âI take it you donât usually go to places like this.â
âI- no.â Prism smiled and sipped her drink, her lip curling a bit at the taste. âThe ones I usually attend are boring enough you need to drink yourself senseless in order to get through them. Was worse while Sentinel was still around, but still isnât good.â She smiled at him, golden optics finding his as she swirled her cube around. âThis place is better though- bits actually seem like they want to come here.â
Sideswipe chuckled a bit as he took another sip of high grade. âSounds boring as watching paint dry.â He mused. âHere, itâs always interesting.â
âMaybe Iâll bring you next time, have a chance at a decent conversation with somebot who doesnât have their head stuck so far up their own tailpipe they can see last weekâs overload.â She chuckled. âDoes your conjux approve of you hanging out at a bar during your evenings?â Prism asked, finishing her drink.
âI donât have a conjunx.â He smiled slightly. âJust myselfâŠand me annoying the scrap out of my brother and his conjunx most the time.â He shrugged a bit.
âReally?â She blinked, looking surprised. âI thought the femme in the room earlier was your mate- but at least you do have a nice family.â She smiled.
âFamily is important, now more so than ever.â Prism smiled, looking at her glass. âItâs getting late, you wanna head back to my place?â She purred, her servo finding his.
Sideswipe blinked a bit with surprise. He glanced to their servos before his optics settled upon her face again. A slow grin forming as he gave her servo a gentle squeeze. âI thought youâd never ask~â he purred back, finishing his drink. âLead the way.â
Prism smiled, chuckling softly before getting up to leave with him. âWasnât sure you were gonna say yes, but this way-â she murmured as she left Maccadams with him, heading towards the Iacon Tower.
âAnd why wouldnât I say yes?â He chuckled softly as he walked with her. âI mean I never been a mech to say noâŠespecially not to a bot as beautiful as you.â He murmured, his voice dropping low for a moment.
