I'M BACK IN THE BUILDING AGAIN

Hello, people of the universe!

My name is Xel / Xelle. I'm a college student from the US who has a love for Hermitcraft, the life series, and all the little knick-knacks in between (including elaborate Watcher lore and Convex magic). I've since returned to Tumblr in search of a better, more whimsical online experience (I'm trying to quit the fearmongering website that is Twitter). I want to have a place to spit out into the void about the things that interest me most. My own little corner on the Internet, perhaps.

If my name sounds familiar, that's because I used to run another Hermitcraft / Life Series focused side blog named @shish-kabinch! Since it was attached to my old account, I've decided just to start a new one. This is not my first rodeo on Tumblr, that's for sure.

Live, Love, Lost and Learned

(a completely unstructured rant about 3rd life, desert duo and the meaning of life)

"xelle you're manic posting" I know and I don't care lol

it's crazy to think that desert duo kinda helped me understand that it's okay to lose things in life? wild I know but it's an odd truth?

I've always favored 3rd life over every other season (though I have a feeling by tomorrow that will probably change lol), mainly because I enjoyed the "rough around the edges", "this is our first time doing this and we don't know how it's gonna go" feel. but I've also realized that it's landed a special place in my heart because of the moral it very unknowingly taught me.

if you couldn't tell (hi) I've been a fan of the character of grian for a long time, and have been aware of his "Watcher Lore" for almost just as long. Having watched EVO so many years ago, his character in that series left a really big impact on me (the concept of being taken away from people you consider family / community, the concept of leaving people, even if you love them, etc. I promise I intend to do a full deepdive on some of the themes EVO unknowingly has buried deep inside it but I guess I'll wait to do that until AFTER this season is over because I have a feeling it's about to add a lot more info lol)

nevertheless, watching his arc in 3rd life was one that was really meaningful to me, especially once you put into consideration that he is, technically, the god of this world. That he created it, and didn't need to participate fairly alongside his peers. But he does anyway. He follows all the same rules they do, even though he knows he has the ability to change the game at any point he wants to. In a way, I see it as grian being asked the question, "why participate when you know that it will only end in everybody dying?"

Why continue teaming up with Scar in 3rd life, even after his first life has been taken? Why make allies when you know they won't last?

And it's a strangely philosophical outlook to have taken from 3rd life, I'll admit, but the question of "why do anything when everything ends?" is something I think that the life series as a whole manages to combat so, so well. and, in my opinion, it's because the experiences of life are worth the trouble. form alliances for the sake of the memories. build the home for the sake of comfort. have those conversations for the sake of insight and knowledge. yes, the end result is, and always has been, the same, but that doesn't mean the trip there isn't worth the risk.

and the real bow on top for me is the fact that grian won that season. it feels so poetic for the god who started it all to be the last one standing, having gone through a mortal life cycle and to have lived, loved, lost and learned from it. To have made a great friend, stuck by his side through thick and thin, and to have lost him just beneath his hands. to die in the silence now that everybody around him was gone.

to me, that can be interpreted in a way that it's the people around us that makes life worth living. without them, the world is silent and still. life isn't worth living if there's nothing in it that helps to influence it; shape it and change it, for better or for worse. that life, despite the eventual outcome, is worth all the moments that are made in-between. that if it must end with a tragically poetic fight between you and your friend, the memories that you made along the way better be worth the heartbreak. because what else is living for if not loving, losing, and learning from it all?
