I don't understand how just cause they cut the kiss means they won't do Jason/Kimberly? They still had some pretty heavy moments that clearly showed romantic interest building up. Probably the most significant is when they tried to reach for each other through their zords and looked at each other before dying. Plus the official novel and the canon sequel graphic novel show Jason/Kimberly very much still being the plan. So what makes you think they'll cut that all?
Officially they are stating that they felt it added nothing to the film or ovewall and that it was derogatory to Kim’s development, comics and novels might or might not reflect, continuity is always a lacking thing - and I don’t mean just for this. So, honestly, take all of that as you may. This is all shipping aside, because personally, I don’t give two shits who ships what as long as at the end of it, my babies - the babies I grew up with - are happy, and in happy, sane healthy relationships or in no relationship at all if that makes them happy, fine by me. I’ll be peachy keen. I am not going to start a ship war, because childish much?
Personally? I’ve had predicted a lot about the first movie that’s seemed to come relatively true, though I’ve never actually shared it on tumblr. Just with friends. Mainly that they were testing the stereotypical waters of tv/movie tropes of Main Male Lead and Male Female Lead hooking up briefly. That it wouldn’t make it into the second movie should they end up doing a six to seven movie series like they originally stated. I also predicted that when I noticed that Rita had the green ranger coin that we would get either a mid-credit scene or post credit scene leading up to Tommy. Budding relationship was cut, mid credit scene. Coincidence, probably, I’m just very attached to this lore.
However, lets take this down the bottom level of it, aka the studio. No, new MMPR is not copy and paste, they’ve done some edits, but they are not going to go to far off things that wasn’t out of the realm of possibilities.1990s and late 2010s are two very different beasts in terms of what being out means, but there will be things they won’t stray away from. That’s simply fact, they really can’t when it’s movie one of a franchise they hope to build to for a newer generation while appeasing the older generation. They are thinking about the money, quite honestly, and it’s not uncommon. Everything is a money scheme with movies like these, it has been from the start. No named actors for the main characters, bigger names for the villains/supportive.
In the end they are going to go for simple. Simple to many people might mean Main Boy gets Main Girl, which for this movie is Jimberly, but that doesn’t always mean simple to Studio who is doing a reboot of a hugely popular tv show. Simple for the studio might be revisiting Tomberly or having something completely different in the end, aka Jommy & Trimberly. Or having nothing at all. Or worst case scenario, everyone’s dead. We just don’t know.
But for me, right now? It’s off, because THEY officially said it was off. Everything else fanon at that point. I’ve learned not to get my hopes up with a lot of fandom things, I mind my own little corner of fandoms and I try to only share what I have knowledge of, what I’m theorizing and that I create.
We’ll see in movie 2 what happens. If there is a movie 2, fingers crossed because everything visually so far has been what I’ve wanted for a MMPR reboot for ages.
TLDR, because sorry for the word vomit:
Continuity is always the lacking thing, as in hindsight, novelization/graphic novel was probably completed and produced before they did their final edits on the film. Cut romance was probably one of the last movie edits.
And studio, while very brave with the representation and diversity in today’s rather divided society is going to keep it as simple and close to old lore as possible while finding ways to still take risks. Even if it is not viewed as simple to the rest of us.
I don’t know all the answers, I’m just theorizing like everyone else is.
