SIMPLE GUIDE:

Body Horror: Things that cannot happen in real life. EX: The Thing, stomach mouths, eyes on hands, etc

Gore: Fresh injuries, often severe. EX: Severed leg, gutspill, deep gashes, etc

NEITHER: Healed injuries and burns, congenital differences, missing appendages, etc. If I could theoretically go to the store and see that character browsing the isles- It isn't body horror or gore. That's just a person. *AND the amount of people that tag, not just fictional characters, but real human beings as body horror is staggering. Its not solely a fandom issue, ableism and bigotry against anyone that looks sufficiently "different" is prevalent in real life and has devastating consequences.

This is the beginning of the end of video games.

We’re already at the point where graphics and power are doing everything they possibly can with regards to the human eye.

I think it’ll take one or two more generations maximum for console manufacturers and developers to really let that sink in, so here are my predictions:

1. By the end of the 9th generation, many consumers will feel as though we’ve reached the peak of raw power

2. By the end of the 10th generation, most will feel this way.

3. The 11th generation of consoles will try and find the next technological breakthrough through brute force and/or gimmicks. It’s gonna be tactile VR or 8k or something worthless like that. And it’s not gonna work.

4. Video games rapidly die and combust, then they rise from the ashes like a phoenix. No longer able to tout graphics or possibly even gameplay, video games get weird. Fast.

Blockbuster video games will still exist much in the way that they currently do, primarily as live-service games. Everything outside of them, though, will get increasingly experimental (obviously, indie games have been here for decades, but while AAA games tread the ground of indies, indies will get even more bizarre. They may not even be recognizable as video games to us in the current day)

Mirroring what happened to painting after photography, philosophy will begin to take over gaming. Questions will arise as to what a video game even is, why make them at all, and what value do specific games bring to us. (This is already starting to become mainstream)

There won’t be a 12th generation of consoles. Some people will still try to categorize things that way, but the very term “generation” will become less and less relevant and useful as time goes on.

Eventually, video games will merge fully with fine art, in the same way as, again, photography, but also in the same way as film and recorded music. Blockbuster video games will, again, continue to exist, but when you say the word “video game”, the general populace will be just as likely to think of galleries and institutions as they are to think about sweaty 14-year-olds playing hero shooters

I can’t wait to watch video games choke on their own spit. Mark my words, incredible things will happen with their corpse.

I will politely disagree. People who play console don’t want PCs, and they don’t want to play on their phones.

Gaming PCs, by and large, are their own hobby. PC gamers are just as invested in the construction of their PC as well as what they play on it, and the world of PC games is much more vast and complicated.

On a console, you can buy a game for that console, and you know that it’ll work.

Not to mention the enormous demographic of children, who you don’t want to give $3,000 worth of equipment to. (I heard that there’s a new child-focused console that actually out-sold XBox last holiday season)

I don’t think that consoles will merge with mobile, either, because we already tried that. Everyone was trying to make that work in the early 2010s, and it just… didn’t. The truth is that people play mobile games in different ways and for different reasons than they do console games— big publishers have now caught up to the fact that mobile games need to be built ground-up from mobile.

Now, things have happened in the other direction recently. In the 2010s, there was an attempt to bring console games to mobile, but today, it’s mobile games being brought to consoles, and this has actually been successful. However, the games where this happens, are, in my opinion, very rarely ever the ones actually worth playing (Genshin Impact, Stumble Guys, etc.)

In addition, I think we’re having a cultural shift away from phones. We’re getting tired of them. We’ve realized that it’s kind of nice to have different equipment for different tasks (see the massive rise in Polaroids)

The line between portable gaming and home console gaming, though? Those lines will absolutely continue to be burred. The Switch proved that a hybrid model is both possible, lucrative, and more than just a gimmick. I don’t think that full hybrids will be the only way going forward, though. Manufacturers will instead be free to choose to what degree their consoles are portable and to what degree their consoles are confined to the home.

As hardware gets cheaper, I can even see a rise in hardware specifically designed for a single game, much like arcade machines and plug-and-plays of the past. Though I think that’ll be mostly reserved for highbrow games where extreme control of the experience is desired.

You should want biting and stinging creatures and thorny plants and toxic mushrooms to be common in the wild forever. You should not want forests and wetlands to be defenseless toothless storybook playgrounds for any idiot to lumber around in and their unleashed dog to piss on without any possible repercussions. Something, even a little poison ivy blocking one side path, even a faint cloud of gnats that might get in your eyes, should always be present that forces you to exercise some kind of awareness and care when you're surrounded by nature.

And eventually make you want to leave.
