To be Gorgeous Is to be Free, to be Free is Gorgeous
Gold. That was the only thing Knox's vision allowed him to see. This mirage of endless, shimmering surface rolled, thorned and screeched like walls would, unpapered church structures that recurred into themselves in sarcastic loops. What is will and has but isn't, but was it and when?
And at once, it opened. Peeling outwards like wallpaper, gold leaf wilting beneath the heat, up and around it roiled in glamourous, blazing waves. Strings guided the cascading crests in perfect coils, obeying the cosines and running tangentially away into the forever of a Dominarian sky, the romantic sunsets and gorgeous rises were being illustrated in the mere passage of these rays, arcing and cackling with the love songs every acre told. Their source became apparent quickly, sat at the heart of the abbey atop a throne, leg over one another. Her eyelashes batted, sparkling across her darkened eyes, glimmering against her skin. She was built from lions eye, the wonderful umbers of her skin shone as Knox's eyes followed the lines, to her glittering crystal bangles, revolving and clinking like chimes, following to her ornate nail set. styled like krises they arced side to side, encrusted with flaming diamonds. They pushed upwards, moving to her hair, now freed and blossoming outwards. Curls, millions of them, ran from her head to the floor, united in their freedom, burying into gold from their origin point of onyx.
"Your other half found where I am. She really works you like a dog when she grows bored does she not?" Her voice was stern, refined by centuries of pressure upon carbon layers within the earth.
"I wouldn't call Viridian my 'other half' but, yeah. It's just me and the support she thought I'd need."
"That's why I say you are her other half. Her stardom and her humanity, both here to somehow convince me to return to my position of abuse."
"O-oh. It's determined already then."
"Well go on then. Tell me thousands are dying. Tell me a replacement to me is ruining the plane. Tell me the Incur are hoarding all power. I will not go back."
"What about beauty? You made Xerex so beautiful, without you there's no reason for people to wake up or engage with people!" Knox's sudden raised voice stunned even himself. To shout in the presence of Opulence, despite her not being his queen, still carried the weight of all the gold on Dominaria.
"Oh?" She stood, her heels hitting the floor like a metronome, paced and piercing, "you want me to make things beautiful? You think I had not tried? It was in my every work, the ways a Sister's dress would fall, the ways a spire would be carved, the ways a song caught the air, the ways the seamstresses weaved and moved their arms. It was in the lettering of every page of legal document, and the armour of every enforcer. It even reached the Royals, their crowns were Raqsai, their coronations Pestoxian and power enforced by Shamashian rights. I was there, I made everything that could be beautiful gorgeous. Who are you to ask more of me?"
Knox had shrunken before her. Opulence stood, held the room in her palms and could eject him at any moment. And yet she hadn't, her palms remained lowered, she made no threat and even in her anger held no hatred.
"What... would make you come back? We can't continue without you, really."
"I would come back if I would not be challenged at every step of the way. No matter what I would do or suggested it would be met with resistance. So I believed what my fellow Representatives said, XereX first, no matter what. And then I was challenged again, treated as a pariah the moment I bowed down to their policies and worldview. I can handle challenge, but when the waves do not stop they wear away any coastline."
"That might be, difficult, I mean really it's-" but Knox was silenced. He caught the wet sound, the drear setting upon her face. Purple streaked through her black, smudging as her lashes fell. Strings of gold mixed with the slow, puffing around her face. "Look at me. There is nothing romantic, nothing gorgeous about what XereX did to me. My exhaustion, hidden from public eye, has devoured all that is me. I will rise to the challenge when I am able, but that time will not come quickly. Understood?"
"I understand Opulence. I won't bother you further. I'll tell Viridian that we-"
In that moment, Viridian appeared. Sliding in from nowhere, her standard affair when planeswalking somewhere she had not seen personally. "Sup bitches, so Knox you've failed getting Opulence back? Damn, a shame really. That's the only reason I got you out the house!"
"Are... are you fucking joking? I've been volunteering with a fire station and-"
"And shaking ass on the network to pay your bills, what's new?"
Opulence stood agape, her face shifting and clicking as she composed herself. Bags cleared, any signs of tears vanishing. "You. The heart of the performer and her arrogance. What makes you come here, the belief that mocking me will make me listen to you, my inferior?"
"Inferior? Oh that's new, the last time I saw you we were equals, I was like a daughter outside of your haus, right?"
"You were. And yet look at you, thinking yourself better than anyone else. That is what makes you fall into ruin again and again, sit down and listen to your elders, let me guide you back into being-" Opulence looked down at herself. Again, she was 'mother', again putting the pieces of another back together. "You will leave now. I won't tolerate you or your narcissism."
"Then I simply won't be narcissistic. In fact, I'll even give you something as a get well soon gift. How's that?" Viridian smirked, her teeth glimmering under the light of Opulence.
"Fine. Give your gifts and leave, but know I will discard them."
Viridian pulled a box from a higher space, manifesting the mahogany into both her hands. It was ladened with golden accents, presented through a kneeled bow before Opulence. A plinth above all reason, a pillar of artistry that held no need to be bound by physics or explanation.
"I made this for you, when all of us were one person. See, I can be kind." Opulence ignored her patronising joke as she unbuckled the clasp, lifting it with her willpower. Sound fled the room, making way for her to gasp and process the object within, while Knox stared over at the back of the lid. Shadows spilled out from the box, pushing all light aside. Opulence placed her hand around it, staring at the jet-black presence. "Where... where did you find this? How could you make this, this isn't anything you'd be capable of."
"I took some creative liberties. What matters is it is yours now, the core of the gift was taken from someone wicked and now you, the highest of all Representatives, have one. Go on, see what you can do with it."
Opulence had gone. The building shuddered, before staying still once more. Clearly now the sand of Dominaria had consumed Opulence's original escape. "So Knox, we're all alone now. You've been such a good aid this entire trip."
"Viridian, I don't wanna make a full spiel out of this. You made me walk for days in a desert with wine and, granted some good meat, and sun protection, and... heatproof clothing, and a weird dimensional bedroom I could hide in and... why am I mad at you this time?"
"If you don't know and I don't know. How about a little reward? A thank you, if you will, let your everything out. Lady V loves working with you and letting you be everything you'd wanna be."
"For an hour, fine. I'll play your game, and you'll take me back to Kamigawa. And maybe, I'll even remove the no-contact and total separation thing. And the money from our deal. Having a proper magical connection again has been... exhilarating."
"That's the wolf I remember. Now come on, I'll keep the focus on me and you ambush and devour."
As usual I want to thank @jasper-graphics for our dividers and @xenobladexfan for our Viridian and Knox cards!
