Enough is enough, & you should know that.
I’m a small audience here compared to the larger Tumblr users but I want to bring this across to EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU, whether you’ve done something like this or never even heard of it before in your life.
Cosplay shaming & just hurtful/illogical comments about racism in general.
Despite being a small artist, I’m a Cosplayer myself outside of Tumblr & have seen a fair share of insanely horrendous critics about Cosplayers that are more bad than good. Now, the recent unnecessary & recurring drama I’ve seen is Knite Maya, an incredibly talented Cosplayer, being shamed for yellow-facing, face-taping, eye-taping & so much more for being “racist” in his Cosplay of Sangwoo (Killing Stalking).
All this (whatever)-facing has been shrewd in perception that now people just think it’s right to throw that term everywhere as they see fit. But do you insensitive people really understand what you’re even saying? Sure; it’s an opinion, you may say, but that doesn’t mean your opinion is invincible to be countered or that your opinion 100% right.
Everything isn’t racist just because you or a bunch of people throw that word everywhere just because you’re upset about something.
Cosplay is an act of APPRECIATION for characters & even authors/artists/creators & their works, this hobby is done to bring characters to life & show our compassion to all things we know & love. Note that word.
Many Cosplayers strive for accuracy when they Cosplay, who wouldn’t? Everyone is a perfectionist in our own way & we all want to look good. This hobby is harmless than anything else & yet people put it across that Cosplayers ourselves are the criminals here & these users on the internet are the good guys/victims of our so-called “crimes”.
All this black-facing, white-facing, yellow-facing being accused are just incredibly stupid comments being tossed without considering the flaws of their opinions.
Changing the color of one’s skin DOESN’T mean he or she is racist all the time. It is called what it is because there are people who do it to mock, criticise or pass a joke at a culture or race.
Remember when I said APPRECIATION? Now does that sound like mockery or criticism? This is exactly my point.
Just because you have the freedom to speak what you want doesn’t mean you can spout whatever you think is right without considering the false information in your words, as well as how your point isn’t backed by legit truth.
If you’re wondering what’s black-face & racist, then THIS is a clear example of that mockery.
While so many of you are quick to shoot Knite down multiple times for (allegately) doing all of that, all of you are so, so wrong. Unless you see some sort of mockery in his captions or confirm to know some hidden agenda in him Cosplaying such characters, all I see is that he is Cosplaying because he likes the character in a way & to show APPRECIATION for a creator’s work.
Knite’s not yellow-facing, he’s not mocking Asians, he’s not promoting abuse, he’s not romanticising abuse, he’s not promoting sadism, he’s doing NOTHING WRONG. I’m an Asian myself & I don’t see anything wrong with his Cosplay, yet others who may NOT be Asians believe it’s downright criminal.
Many of you may be familiar with Pion Kim, a recent Sombra (Overwatch) Cosplayer that has gone viral for her amazing accuracy in her Cosplay & superb realism of the character. She was recently accused of black-facing just because she was a South Korean Cosplaying a dark-skinned Mexican character. Her response to all this hate is exactly what I wish to bring across & I think everyone should read it HERE.
At this point in time, so many people are quick to judge & throw out whatever they think without considering the fact that it can be cyber bullying, which is a major issue, & hurt someone’s feelings. We’re all the same human beings & just as everyone has been saying - Treat others like how you want to be treated.
Everyone can be right, but everyone can be wrong.
Everyone needs to learn how to be sensitive to others feelings & to always think before speaking up. A hobby is harmless, but words can be harmful. Unless you know for sure someone is doing something wrong as a joke or anything, I believe it should be right that while you have an opinion you should check on what you say & write. Such words can be a double-edged sword & may just stab you both ways.
Painting a skin-tone is not wrong if it’s done for a harmless purpose. You’re free to object, you’re free to agree. Don’t exaggerate more than there is to exaggerate, period.
