I like to think that towards the end of every break, Jack begins insisting that he can’t wait to get back to boarding school because why do Jupiter and Morrigan always have to tap dance on his last nerve!?

He definitely doesn’t miss them when he’s away.

But back at Graysmark, Jack (with the help of his roommates) has been hiding two cats in his dormitory. And one day, right before winter break begins, Jack’s roommate tells him that he won’t be able to take the cats home with him this time around. (“I know! I’m sorry, okay! My aunt’s coming to stay for Christmas and she’s allergic.”)

So Jack shows up on the steps of the Deucalion with a ginger cat cradled in his left arm and a black one in his right. Thank the Divine Thing, Kedgeree is the only person around at the moment.

“Kedgeree! Happy to see you! Quick, you have to help me hide these cats somewhere.”

“Young Jack! You gain an inch every time I see you these days! But what’s this about hiding cats? You know that I can’t keep animals in the hotel without Jupiter’s permission.”

“Okay, but we have to at least hide the collars.”

“Whatever for?”

And then Kedgeree examines the little silver tags dangling from each of the cats’ necks: first the female with the sleek black coat, and then the ginger tomcat.
