31 DAYS OF MYTHOLOGICAL CREATURES // ↳ 16. Kelpie
“No mortal ear could have heard the kelpie passing through the night, for the great black hooves of it were as soundless in their stride as feathers falling.” - Mollie Hunter
CHARACTER AESTHETIC: the optimist.
“i’m n o t interested in blind optimism, but i’m very interested in optimism that is hard-won, that takes on darkness and then says, ’this is n o t enough.‘”
Possessions:
Though she’s quite a rough and fighty type who often doesn’t know her own physical strength, and she would fit in well with Fairy Tail with all their brawls, Frankie would be appalled and quite outraged by the way they damage their guildhall and other things.
Because she has had to save so much to buy her own guildhall and she doesn’t have many possessions herself to due needing to save for the guild, she takes excellent care of what she does have, she needs her things to last as long as possible as she can’t afford to replace them or splurge on things (poor muse is poor).
Reckless and carefree destruction is a huge no-no in her books. If she accidentally breaks or ruins something of someones, she’s going to be extremely apologetic and try her hardest to fix whatever it was and make it up to the person.
If anyone was to damage her guild, even though its already shabby, she will likely react violently because it is already shabby and she worked so hard to buy it. (also note that insulting her guild building will probably earn you a fight from her).
Sherry-san:
the question was not really what she had expected, but then, the doll play mage had not known what to expect from the beginning. but then, she had always been curious and so she contemplated the question for a moment, manicured fingers tapping against her chin as she kept walking, her eyes flickering over the neat rows of houses that surrounded them, many having the guild crest somewhere — the presence of lamia scale had made zinnia big and zinnia had not forgotten this.
❛ well, lamia is an old guild so i wasn’t around when we first rose from the ashes, ❜ sherry said with a casual shrug, sidestepping a mother who was dragging her child along. then, she looked over her shoulder and at the other mage. ❛ i believe what led to our current reputation ❜ — fame was such a mundane word, and too closely linked to infamy in sherry’s mind — ❛ was that the first lamia scale mages stressed what sets us apart rather than what we have in common with other guilds. it only makes sense, i suppose. why would anyone hire a specific guild when any guild can pull off the job? ❜
for her, this was common sense. some guilds were simply better suited for certain jobs than others, and to gain reputation as a guild, being unique was surely helpful. after all, no one would hire the average fairy to do a job that required the mage to operate with great caution and where going overboard would be a disaster —— just like no one would perform surgery with a war hammer.
still lost in thoughts, she halted. ❛ ah — i forgot … what’s your name? ❜
She kept her eyes on Sherry’s every movement, watching as those fingers (with nails so nicely maintained) touched her chin. Frankie didn’t want to miss any details, the Lamia mage was highly skilled and well known, and that was for good reason. Studying someone or something was the first step in understanding and replicating, this was what she had learnt from her chosen form of magic and she had spent many many hours studying different creatures in order to be able to most effectively use their shapes and likenesses.
Eager eyes slightly widened, she listened intently, almost wishing she had thought to bring something to write with so that she wouldn’t forget what was being said. As Sherry had done, Frankie avoided the mother and child, aiming a little grin at them both before refocusing on the woman slightly ahead of her, unwilling to miss any of the wise words coming from her, nodding in agreement with them. She would definitely start giving thought later to how she could make her own guild, Kelpie Dawn, unique.
“Oh, my name? Frankie!” she said as she stopped beside her, her usual smile still very much present. Present, that is, until she became even more aware of just how feminine in appearance Sherry was, especially when she compared her to her tomboyish self. The smile became harder to hold onto as she wished she could have instead given her the full version of her name, Francesca, as it was much more ‘girly’ (which was why she usually avoided using it in the first place, but Sherry’s presence made her self conscious of her lack of femininity). “O-or Francesca, if you prefer...”
Pretty:
Smiling slightly at her taking some pretzels she pushed the bowl towards her a little more as she took some more, tearing her attention away from the Guildmaster for a moment to throw her hand out and let a low wave of energy ripple out from her fingertips, stopping the fight that was on the edges of occurring before giving her attention once more.
“You don’t need to buy anything to eat those, they’re free to everyone so long as no one destroys my bar.”
Filling up a glass with some water for her as well she placed it in front of her, the Bars actual owner had always made it clear that things they could do without were to be given to those who deserved them.
She was part way through having a drink of water herself when a tinkling laugh fell from her lips as she processed her words, though not because she was laughing at her but rather the idea of herself roaming around the woods trying to hunt animals was ridiculous. She’d give mercy to animals any day over the torture she inflicted on the Demons she hunted.
“Ah, you misunderstand, I don’t hunt animals. I hunt Demons, I can track them like a bloodhound and unless you planned on giving me a high-level rank that would allow me access to those jobs, I couldn’t join you…”
Having the bowl pushed closer to her brought a smile, which then froze in place as she felt the low thrum of magic. The hairs on the back of her neck seemed to stand on end and tingle, and a light shiver almost ran through her. Curious, she glanced over in the direction the magic had been aimed, noting how a few customers appeared quite sheepish, as if they’d been caught doing something they knew they shouldn’t.
Her attention returned to the bartender after hearing the comment about not needing to buy anything, she relaxed her shoulders in relief and her smile widened a fraction. Free food was the best kind of food after all, especially to a person with very limited jewels. The water was also much appreciated and she took a large sip of it. Her magic always raised her body temperature so much that it made it starving for water most of the time, and sometimes she would forget to drink enough and she would get dehydrated.
Upon hearing the laugh from the other woman, Frankie’s forehead creased slightly in a frown. It hadn’t been an unpleasant sound but, as an intensely proud woman, she had to wonder if it had been made in mockery of her. The explanation that soon came after made her blink in surprise. Demons...? She hunted...demons?
She had to slump, a pout pulling at her lips as she thought over the words spoken.
“I’d totally give you a high rank, you seem super strong...but, uh...with it being such a new guild and all...I doubt we’d get hard job requests for a while...”
Always quick to bounce back, she then flashed a grin as an idea came to mind.
“Maybe you can join after I get more members and we start getting in more requests!?” She used the words ‘more requests’ though in truth the ‘more’ was being overly generous as Kelpie Dawn had so far had zero requests at all.

She had seen the girl exit the Lamia Scale guild and had decided immediately to approach her. Her excitement giving her a wide grin and an agitated bounce in her movements as she got closer.
“Hey, Lamia mage! Gotta minute to talk?”
Pretty:
Brows rising further at her explanation, the awkward note definitely noted, she hummed a little as she refilled the bowls of pretzels in front of her and slid them one by one along the bar, her normal patrons knew where she liked them by now and were always happy to help. Sliding the final bowl to sit in front of her the cute woman across from her, she took a few for herself before answering.
“Guildmaster huh? Seems like a lot of work if you ask me.”
Grinning a bit at the expression on the other woman’s face, a look that would have brought her sister to her knees within seconds had she still been alive, Rhea simply shook her head a little and continued serving people as she spoke. All the while wondering how many suckers she had managed to reign into other things over the years with that expression alone.
“Hope ya not looking to recruit me, cutie. I don’t play well with others when it comes down to Hunting…”
Eyes falling downward to focus on the bowls of pretzels, she just hoped her stomach wouldn’t rumble loudly, it had been a while since she had last eaten. Seeing the woman eat a few, she decided it would be okay to have a couple herself too, though she still felt a little guilty since she wasn’t a paying customer.
Being guildmaster was a lot of work, so she nodded at the comment, though she was sure it would be a much harder job when she actually had some members in Kelpie Dawn, she was willing to be ready for that challenge however.
When she heard the other response, she couldn’t help but slump, her lips forming a pout as she started to trace a swirl onto the bar top with her fingertip. Then she sat up straight once again, she couldn’t give up so easily, she had to keep trying, at least for a little longer. Her excited grin lit up her face, she thought she had a brilliant point to add to the discussion.
“But you’d only have to play well with me! We’d have lots of fun together, I promise! I’m good at hunting too, y’know, and tracking! I lived in the forest for like five years!”
Sherry-san:
zinnia was a calm and peaceful city and sherry found herself strolling through the streets, her steps light and her mood cheery, as she was on her way to the plant mage who had his garden in the outskirts of town. she had picked up on the unfamiliar presence of another mage a bit ago — there were some skills that were simply expected from lamia scale mages — but she had chosen not to turn her head right away. not all mages passing zinnia wanted to be noticed; some just wanted to get closer to the centre of the country.
❛ —your highness? ❜ the doll play mage echoed, her eyes narrowing for a split second before she relaxed again. right, that she was deemed lamia’s princess was no fact that had remained within the guild; it had been made public knowledge and she was still not sure if she actually liked that; it could easily sound bad. ❛ sherry-san is alright, ❜ she continued, regaining her usual composure within moments. ❛ and if you walk with me, i have time to answer questions. ❜
Her cheeks become slightly flushed as she internally replayed her verbal fumbling. Had she really addressed the woman as ‘your highness’? Apparently yes, she had. The knot of nervous energy in her stomach tightened and then relaxed a fraction, and she made a mental note about what to call the woman.
She couldn’t help but grin and clasp her hands together when she understood she would be allowed to talk and learn from the Lamia mage. Nodding at her, she continued walking with her, just hoping her own words wouldn’t fail and embarrass her again.
“Thanks so much, your hi-, uh, Sherry-san!” Maybe she would just stop using any form of address or name with this woman...
Hands still together, she clenched them tight, digging her nails in a little so she could use the sensation to focus, “So, um, Lamia Scale. It’s one of the best guilds around, right? How’d it get so great?”
Without thinking about it, Levy tore a bit of her food away to offer it to the dog. While she still felt a little silly for getting so riled up over getting jumped. Her tiny stature was again against her, but nothing could be down about it now. She could only offer a pleasant expression, quietly relieved to have the dog seemingly settled.
One hand tried to flatten at her dress, embarrassed. “He just startled me a little. I’m not really used to being around dogs.” well, she could make a comment about a particular guild mate but, he was also more like a bear (she was not about to say that out loud, knowing her luck he would appear behind her).
“I’m usually around Exceeds - one of them can get huge but that’s…” she trailed off, her expression becoming sheepish. “Sorry, I don’t mean to keep you. Are you new in Magnolia? Or just passing through? Your pup, what kind is he? If you don’t mind me asking.”
Shifting her hold on Bruno slightly, she scratched behind his ears while he happily devoured what he’d been so kindly offered. A nod was given to the smaller woman’s words, people who weren’t around dogs or other animals often tended to be more easily startled by them, it was understandable.
Frankie’s head tilted slightly to the right as she listened. Exceeds..? She hadn’t heard of them before but decided they sounded quite terrifying (and therefore, awesome). Before she could ask for more information on them however, she got distracted by what else the stranger said.
She shrugged and smiled widely, having enough sense (for once) to ignore how awkward the girl was. Pulling a face as Bruno suddenly lifted his head and licked her cheek, she grumbled at him and then refocused.
“Don’t worry, you’re not keeping me. And I’m sorta passing through, I wanted to check out what the famous Fairy Tail guild was like in person.” She rested her cheek against Bruno’s head for a moment, showing some affection to the creature that was her best friend, “He’s a boxer. A big goofball really.”
Pretty:
A small smirk tugged at her lips as she heard the question, too fresh to understand what it was she was doing apparently, and Rhea turned slightly to put the glass she had been drying back on the shelf that housed them. Continuing to focus on the woman, but unable to stop doing her job, she nodded at someone flagging her down for a refill and did just that, sliding it down to them as she raised an eyebrow at the question.
Mage Guilds were notorious in Ishgar, in Fiore in particular, and yet she had never felt the compulsion to join on. It was one thing to live a life as a Hunter but she had made a promise to herself long ago that she wouldn’t get close enough to anyone that would put them in harms way, Mage or not, she simply wasn’t hard wired to depend on people like that. In saying that, though, she understood the appeal, which is what prompted her question.
“A Mage guild..? Can’t say I am… Why’s that, you looking for one to join..?”
Alert to everything around her, she watched every moment the other woman made with interest, inwardly admiring how the stranger had served the customer so smoothly. She sat up straighter upon hearing the answer to her question, a grin growing before she shook her head and laughed a little.
“Me? Naw, I’m already in one! A brand new one, just opened. I kinda...might be...”
Her enthusiasm trailed off with her words and she gave an awkward laugh, rubbing the back of her neck before shrugging, “I’m the only member, well, I’m guildmaster.”
A guild with only a master and a dog, what a joke. She decided not to spell out exactly why she had approached and brought up talk of guilds with the woman, she let her wide eyed, innocent and eager expression give the explanation. Silently hoping the other female would be overcome with excitement to join her guild.
Pretty:
She’d noticed the other woman the moment she entered the bar, her Hunter instincts flaring to life upon the new found power setting foot in the place she considered hers – the owner adored her enough to let her run the place pretty much – but she made no move to approach her. Everyone was welcome in the Bar, after all, what she was tampering down instead was her innate curiosity to know everyone.
Busying herself with drying a glass, and some dry conversation with one of the usuals, she still made note of where the woman was until she waved her down and the white-haired woman walked over with a smile on her face. Tilting her head slightly at the compliment to her appearance she leaned forward on the counter, her forearms resting on the bar top as she smiled at her.
“Depends what you’re offering, cutie ~”
Frankie’s smile grew wider as the other woman approached, feeling oh so successful and proud of herself. She had gotten the woman’s attention and her to come over to her, she’d done well with this interaction so far! And the woman was nice and friendly too it seemed, what a bonus!
Already she could imagine this stranger joining Kelpie Dawn, she would be the second member (if Bruno wasn’t to be counted, being a dog and all) and they would have lots of fun fixing up the run down building together and getting more members to join. Ah but she was letting her imagination get far too ahead of herself, this white haired woman might already be in a guild or not want to join one.
“Offering...?” the word was finally processed and had her rather stumped, “Well, I guess I don’t really have anythin’ to offer yet...But uh, anyway, are you in a mage guild?”
The day was about as normal as she could expect with her given occupation. While Droy was off eating and Jet being at his side Levy made the decision to go run a few errands before they went on their mission. Which was mostly code for her going to buy more books to read while on the train.
Books ready and tucked away, the small mage decided to buy herself a little snack. though as she unwrapped it, she became aware of panting. For a moment she blinked, before she looked down at the dog – something which resulted in a sharp squeak to leave her lips. She was very much not used to dogs – not that she usually had anything against them.
Snack held above her still (she assumed that was what the dog was after) she watched the interaction between them. “N-No, no, uhm.” Levy was a little disoriented still, needing to gather herself. She hoped she did not look too ridiculous. “It’s alright… I think I have something here your dog likes, huh?”
Noticing how Bruno kept trying to jump up, Frankie simply scooped him up and held him to restrain his attempts. He wriggled in her arms but, despite that and his solid weight, she was able to keep him relatively still and prevent his escape, her physical training pay off nicely.
Her eyes took in the stranger’s appearance and the sight of the food in her hand, and she grinned, nodding at her words and then humming as she cast her mind back over the past day or so. Stomach suddenly rumbling loudly, she looked down at herself in slight surprise, an amused smile beginning to form.
“Huh, yeah, I guess we haven’t eaten in a day, have we, boy?” she said, directing her words at the dog. She turned her attention back to the young woman and grinned a bit, though she was still quite concerned for her, especially as she noted the daze she was in, “He didn’t scare you did he? M’pretty sure I heard you squeak. You seem kinda shaken up, are you alright?”
it was national dog day yesterday & I didn’t post at all oops…..but here’s a pic of the loml

The town housing Lamia Scale was as nice as she had expected, it was well worth the long train ride in her opinion. To make her guild great, she had decided it would be best to study other great guilds, which was why she had traveled to this very town in the first place.
Lamia Scale was an old guild and a famous one, many of its mages were well known to the public, which was why Frankie was able to recognise the one and only Princess of Lamia, Sherry Blendy, as she walked through the town. Who better to ask about building up a guild than a long time member of one?
With a burst of excitement, the young guildmaster hurried after the woman and started to walk at her side. Nervousness mixing with delight as she looked at the woman.
“Hi, Sherry! I mean, Miss Blendy, I mean, your highness, I, um...Sherry-san? Anyway, I know we don’t know each other but I’d love to pick your brain about stuff if you’ve got some time?”
She wished she’d had more experience with talking to well known people, and people in general really, perhaps she should have thought this through first...

It was rather cheeky and bold of her to go into the bar when she had no jewels to spare and no intention of buying any drinks or anything else. The reason she went in was simply because she had sensed there was someone with magic inside and she wanted a closer look.
She sat in one of the corners of the room and looked around, studying everyone to figure out who it was she was sensing. After a long ten minutes, she finally got to her feet and headed to the bar, getting herself comfortable on one of the stools before she rested her folded arms on the bar top and leaned on it. It was the bartender that had magic she had deduced, and she wanted to get her attention and so Frankie aimed a bright grin at her and gave a little wave.
“Hey, Pretty! Gotta minute?”
