chuuya on the cover of volume 23

The cover for the next manga volume, Vol. 23, has been revealed at the end of the second Season 4 PV!

And I would like to talk about the depiction of Chuuya on it!

Both Akutagawa and Chuuya are featured on the cover, both having been turned into vampires in prior volumes.

Akutagawa is facing away, while Chuuya is facing slightly forward, so that the reader should be able to see his face. Yet, it is hidden, his expression unknown to us.

While we can’t see Akutagawa’s face either, due to his turning away, Chuuya is at an angle where we should be able to read his expression. However, we cannot. It was deliberately hidden from us.

But why is this? Just an artistic choice or, forgive me for reaching, but maybe …

a sign that he is hiding something?

Thinking about how Oda failed in saving the orphans after he vowed to see them grow up to become good adults, free from the PM and able to do what they want, yet in exchange for that he was able to save and show the light to the person who probably needed it the most …

He wanted to be a novelist, the type of position where you are able to reach the hearts of thousands. And yet, never achieving his dream of becoming a novelist, he was only able to reach out to one. However, it was the one who needed it most of all.

As my girlfriend just said to me: He wasn’t able to save the kids he promised to save. But in exchange for that he was able to save a different kid. And that kid was Dazai.

fyodor’s ability, crime and punishment (theory)

As mentioned in a previous post (that I recommend you read first for more context; it’s really short) Dazai might be trying to provoke Fyodor into using his ability. So. What is that ability? (co-written with @violetpaperstars)

As mentioned in the tags of this post, I believe Chuuya and Fyodor are almost guaranteed to be safe … People are so worried that Chuuya (and by extension Fyodor) are gonna drown, as if Dazai isn’t using the situation to provoke Fyodor into using his ability, which seems to be some big secret, to save himself and Chuuya.

EDIT 22/11/2022: My girlfriend and I wrote a lengthy theory regarding Fyodor and his ability, with mentions of Chapter 101 at the end! Read it here if you’re interested!

Why else would he need to reach the control panel to continue with his plan? To taunt him, obviously. It’s not like he has any control over the water or anything, so there’s no other reason why he needed to be here.

how did fyodor brainwash nathaniel?

Lately, I’ve been thinking about Fyodor and his ability and then one of my friends wondered about how Fyodor brainwashed Nathaniel because, as far as we know, he doesn’t really…do that? But Dazai wasn’t surprised by it. He called it a “classic move” from Fyodor. Sure, he could’ve just meant it in a “it’s nothing new for you to use people” way, but we haven’t seen anyone else being brainwashed at this point.
