He may also be starting to realize why Aurora grew up to be so obstinate with these sorts of things as well. Maybe this sort of thing ran in the family after all.

"Come on, dad. What's the problem? Shout it out loud how much you love her. If you've already gone so far as to declare that much out loud, then you may as well go the full mile and finish strong by saying how much you love her in front of everyone, too." Wait, what was the point of this again? He couldn't recall. He was just having fun poking fun at his father now.

"At least I've always been around for you and your sister. No dumping you off on mom while I disappeared for months on end. And I've never declared my love for your mother to a whole army either."

"What? So you wouldn't want to tell the world how much you love mom? Mom's sure not shy about saying how she loves you. I think if she could, she'd hold up a banner in front of a crowd that says exactly that for everyone to see if you ever did disappear for work and that was her way of welcoming you home."

     “Not every couple is the picture perfect definition of romantic, not even you guys, huh?” With how often his parents acted so lovey-dovey, it was strange to think there was ever a time when things were simply awkward between them. He won’t pretend to understand how their relationship must have kicked off based on that. Love came in different forms. “Haha, I’ll keep that in mind. I guess it was the best accident of your life? Actually, if it’s more complicated than that, maybe I should wait to hear that story another time. I was just asking because I found one of the old books mom used to read to us when it was bedtime. When the prince and princess would kiss and live happily ever after, I always thought every kiss must be magical between grown ups. Seeing it reminded me of that and then I realized I never actually asked you or mom about yours and I got curious. Not everything can be fairytale perfect, right?”

“That’s–I mean, uh, not what I was– ugh…” oh jeez, he is getting lectured by his daughter’s boyfriend. Well, he kind of deserved it, and he knows that. Leo is right–thankfully, he knows he is right, too. If anything, Chrom is grateful that he didn’t go along with his dumb-father-suspicions. It is impressive and reassuring. Somehow, that also gave him some sense of deja vu … 

“You’re right.. You are absolutely, right and I am sorry, Leo. It’s just .. sigh. I’m still trying to figure this  .. father thing with her. Don’t get me wrong, I am loving every bit of it and I’m not finding it hard or bothersome or anything it’s just .. I was hoping to get the hang of this as she grows up–as the little Lucina back in the castle grows up; I would be somewhat if a decent father for her. But ..–” he cleared his throat and opt to change the subject. Not really a topic he should burden someone with, even Leo. “Anyway, uh, my apologies, Leo. Can I ask you to check up on her? She might be willing to talk to you if she had any problem.” he is still a father, and he knows that children tend to confide to their best friends and close peers than a parent. 

     A quiet shake of the head. “I understand what you’re saying, really. I think you just need to stop rushing yourself. You can take your time, I’m sure Lucina would understand. The circumstances are... unusual, after all.” Setting aside the start of this exchange, Leo rubbed the back of his neck for a moment as he searched for the next words to say then held up a finger. “Sorry if I sound rude, but you may be her father, but you’re also just a man. It’s all a learning process. I’m sure my dad was frantic when I was born, wondering if he had what it takes to be a good father. Everything was brand new. But you’re not alone. He had my mother at his side the whole time so they could tackle each day together, one step at a time. Yeah, my parents have their flaws, but I still love them and couldn’t ask for better parents. Being a good father doesn’t have to mean worrying over everything she does or you’ll start to point fingers at everyone around you and she may resent you for pushing people away.”

   But listen to him, lecturing away as if he knew so much better than him. An embarrassed laugh soon resulted as he rubbed the back of his neck once more. “But I’m just a kid compared to everyone else, so maybe my opinions have a little less value to them. I’ll talk to her, see how she’s doing, so just leave it to me. What is it my parents say... let kids be kids and work things out between themselves? Something like that.”

“I did, and she said it is nothing but she sighed afterwards. Maribelle says when a girl sighs a lot it is because of her significant other, so what have you done?” 

     “And you just assumed she meant for the worst? Uncle Chrom, you have more experience than me, surely you understand that relationships can make people behave differently? Both Lucina and I are unaccustomed to these things, so every now and then, surely we act unlike our normal selves. I know you’re her father and are only concerned, and I respect you, but I’m a bit hurt you’re assuming the worst of me.”

“So, Leo. I have noticed that Lucina has been sighing more than usual. Care to explain?”

     “...Uncle Chrom, did you even ask her what was wrong before assuming it’s because of me?”

As much as Leo enjoys sword fighting, he is a skilled guitar and piano player thanks to his mother and actually prefers making music over training, even if it is just by a small margin. He spent much of his childhood watching his mother play these instruments in awe and took to learning as soon as possible. The first song he learned on both was the lullaby she used to sing to him to put him to sleep, a song he holds very dearly to his heart. He has a knack for figuring out songs after just listening to them for a while. While he still has much to learn when it comes to actual songwriting, he is ready to learn whenever he puts his blade down.

“Leo,” she called for him outside of his tent. “Do you… have a moment?” there was a place she wanted to visit but she honestly does not have the courage to go to on her own.

     “Yeah, I’ll be right there.” Nothing like hearing that favorite voice at any time of day. Picking up his coat and quickly pulling it on, Leo soon stepped out to meet Lucina with a smile on his face. “What is it? Is something the matter?”

    “To be honest? No, not really. Your mother and I have some really messy upbringings, hers especially as far as this subject’s concerned. But it’s fine though, isn’t it? We’ve all managed to become a happy family in spite of it.”

     “Yeah... you’re right about that. I don’t know what happened to you and mom back then, and maybe I’ll never know, but this family is full of smiles and that’s the important thing, huh? I’d like to learn about your pasts, get to know my parents better, but I can also be content with what we have now.”

    “It’d have to be your mother’s parents then, because you definitely didn’t get it from my side. My mother had black hair, just like mine, and my father had brown hair. That being said, if I remember what your mother told me a while back, her mother was blonde and her father had black hair. So, rest assured: You got your hair from your mother.”

     “...I still feel like the odd one out. So mom was born blonde, but her hair became red and that became her natural color, then I inherited it? But even though her hair is red, Lily also got her hair color from mom, right? Uh... Is our family okay?”

    “Listen – I’m no geneticist, let alone a scientist. It probably has to do with that whole business. And I’m not so sure I appreciate where your train of thought could be going here.”

     “...Wait! Dad, I’m not thinking that! I meant I don’t like how complicated this actually was! Besides, what if we actually got our colors from our grandparents? That was always a possibility.”

     Leo was getting gifts ready so he can marry his beautiful princess. Here he is!
