I want to address something in the indie community because I’ve been gone six months and it’s (still) apparently a thing people do.

“Copying is the sincerest form of flattery”

No. No it’s not. You know what it is? it’s fucking plagiarism. Stealing someone else’s ideas and passing them off as your own is plagiarism. Plain and simple. It’s like writing a research paper - if you take someone else’s paper, even if you tweak it, and turn it in, you will fail. In the case of college, you’ll be f*cking kicked out. Why don’t we have the same standard for indie roleplaying? Or roleplaying in general?

Let’s go for an example, shall we?

I have Jessie, a trans female muse who is studying to be a film producer. She is submissive, sweet, and has a thing for makeup and soccer.

Taking inspiration from her would be:

Feeling like you want to make a trans muse as well, maybe with the same face claim.

Feeling like you want to make a muse that has an interest in makeup.

Feeling like you want to make a muse that majors in film making, or has an interest in producing that.

What is not inspiration:

Taking a muse, and, in some cases, that face claim, and applying the same story, same mannerisms to “your character”. Taking my Jessie and tweaking her to your likes (maybe making her a struggling actress, a soccer star) and using her same submissive, quiet, sweet mannerisms in a very Jessie way. Don’t get me wrong, it’s fine to have a muse that is submissive, quiet, sweet. But if you’ve seen and/or interacted with a muse that is just like that, you need to stop, rethink things. This doesn’t mean putting your own spin on them, changing the face claim, changing little things. This means taking one or two things you like about the character - that she’s trans, majoring in film, or a makeup fanatic (notice that I used or, not and) - and building around that.

I am by no means an English teacher, nor am I fit to judge what is or is not plagiarism of one’s character, but plagiarism in general has a specific definition. If you have questions about your muse being a little too similar to someone else’s, why don’t you give them a message? They will be a far better judge and - hey, you might learn something or be inspired to new and greater heights in your writing.

And yes, I know I got very personal with this, and it might seem like I’m indirecting a little bit (I am. I’ve had Jessie stolen before. I don’t like it.). But you know what? It’s f*cking real. This shit happens. I’m not going to sit idly by anymore and not call people out on their shit.

And one more thing.

IF YOU SEE SOMEONE USING A MUSE THAT YOU FEEL HAS BEEN PLAGIARISED, OR SOMEONE HAS EXPLICITLY STATED THAT THEIR MUSE HAS BEEN TAKEN OR COPIED:

DO. NOT. INTERACT. WITH. THAT. MUSE.

I’m not saying you have to shun the roleplayer (in fact, I don’t suggest that at all) or even harass them (please don’t - we all have feelings). All I’m saying is don’t give that muse the benefit of interaction. I do suggest that you do your best to educate the other mun - especially if it’s your muse that has been copied - and I do suggest you do this as politely as possible. But don’t work with copied muses.

Copying is not the sincerest form of flattery. It’s plagiarism. If you want to flatter a writer, tell them you like their character. Ask if you can interact with that character.

Under no circumstance should you copy someone’s character.

I hope I have articulated myself appropriately.
