I believe that when the consumerist mindset hits fandom, it's a bad sign. A close friend’s father has collected every single item an old rock band has ever put out. He has been collecting it for decades. It’s the kind of collection that looks impossible. What truly gets me is the pure dedication it takes. Maybe he didn’t start out by wanting to own everything, but that’s what he ended up doing. And he enjoys it still. That’s fandom. Consumerism is not like that; a collection is not a trend, you do not rush to get everything, one of each color, at whatever cost. It’s something you build slowly, it’s a hobby you plan for, it’s trying to find the best of opportunities, and knowing how to wait out because you have the time to do so. I don’t think you need to have everything to be a true fan. If that’s what you want to have someday, you don’t need to rush to get everything in the span of a couple of months (or less). You are going to burn out if you treat it like it’s going out of style in a week.

I wrote this before MCR announced the Danger Days Deluxe release. It seems fitting to post it now after seeing so many people angry at the band for this commemorative release. As far as I know, it's the first one they have done since the album release. They are not a band that often releases extras or bonus versions. They are outside of the norm for the level they are at, and they have even fewer special releases than a lot of beloved smaller bands in the scene.

I know that we crave new music, but that's not going to happen unless they feel ready to release it to the world. We should respect that.

It's clear to me after the TPK leak that the music was never the problem; the machine they were stuck on was what killed it for them. And that seems to be something they still struggle with.
