The Xperia Z versus iPhone 5C/5S
After the iPhone 5S and 5C presentation last Tuesday, I just had to compare them with my own Sony Xperia Z.
I compared the price, display, CPU, RAM, battery, networks, front and back camera:

The summer of 2013 was my best summer ever. I studied Norwegian at the University of Bergen and went sightseeing in the weekends. Maybe "sightseeing" isn't the right word... Well, I hiked very much and was able to take pictures of really great views: lakes, mountains, fjords and the sea.
As usual, I made a video of my whole experience, completely filmed with my Sony Xperia Z!

My final (?) thought and reactions from my followers!
I've been a Sony Xperia Z ambassador for a month now and it has been very fun! Here are some thoughts about the phone.
** MY FINAL THOUGHT
✔ THE DESIGN is great: the phone is thin and light. I got used to the large, 5 inch screen after less than a day. ✔ THE SCREEN. Despite its limited viewing angle, I'm still positive about it: it's perfect for watching movies, reading an e-book or view some pictures. Setting the brightness a little higher will take away your (possible) viewing angle problem. ✔ THE PERFORMANCE. The 1.5 GHz quad core snapdragon processor just rocked my world. It made the whole phone super-responsive. Gaming also went great, as I mentioned in my video reviews earlier. ✔ THE CAMERA. The camera starts up quickly and makes perfect 13.1 megapixel photos. Since the firmware update, the photos became even better and I'll definitely be using this on future holidays.
So all in all, I'm very happy with this phone. But how did my social followers react?

Sony Xperia Z's 13.1 megapixel camera review!
The Sony Xperia Z isn't only water resistant, it also has a great camera. The past weeks I went out to test it in various places in Belgium and the Netherlands. This also means that I was able to take pictures and film in both good and bad weather.
In this review I'll be comparing the main features, show you original footage of the phone and the specific camera functions.

Before I go into detail, let's just overview the specifications of the camera:
13.1 megapixel back camera
2 megapixel front camera
FULL HD filming with the front and back camera!

••• VIDEO SAMPLE
Watch a sample video compilation I made with my Xperia Z. All video has been shot with the phone, without enhancement! The video you'll be watching has been exported and uploaded in the same resolution as the original footage, so feel free to watch it in full HD.
Please note that I just noticed that my stabilizator had been switched on the whole time (I recommend to turn it off when you want to film while walking or turning).

••• THE CAMERA APP
Starting the camera...
The camera starts quickly and you'll easily be able to snap pictures when you want to. You'll find the snap and record-buttons on the right, and all settings on the left.
Camera modes
The camera app has 9 different modes:
Superior Auto, which will detect what's best for you (back light, macro mode, etc.)
Normal, where you can set whatever you like
Video camera
Burst, to snap more than one picture at a time
Picture effect
Sweep Panorama
Scene selection
Front camera
Front video
Scenes
Picture effect
Many picture effects to choose from. The effects Sketch, Kaleidoscope and Fisheye are my favourite. You can even customize the effects... Kaleidoscope for instance lets you change the size of the pattern by just pinching the screen.
Panorama sweep
To make a panorama shot, just set the camera mode to "Panorama sweep" and move your camera slowly. On the bottom left you can choose whether the camera should adjust its brightness or not.
HDR, one of the Xperia Z's key features
You can't only take pictures with HDR effect, you can also film in HDR mode! This makes it possible to film against the light and to let colours stand out more, while non-HDR photos and videos will turn out dark.
Camera settings
When HDR is switched off, you can take pictures up to 13.1 megapixels. When HDR is switched on, you can still take wonderful 12 megapixel shots.
One of the camera settings is "Smile shutter", which will automatically take a picture when everyone on it is smiling. You can also adjust the "smile amount" according to your friends' enthusiasm...

Today I was thinking how cool it would be to make a timeline / overview of all the cell phones I've had. Thanks to the site "mowned", I made the following:

My very first phone was the Siemens C3, which was a necessity back in 1997.
My first phone without antenna was the Nokia 3310, the most popular Nokia phone ever. I just loved how I could change the front and back covers whenever I liked.
My first phone with coloured screen was the Sony Ericsson T300 :)
Shortly after that, I bought the Sony Ericsson T610, which was my first phone with a camera.
My very first smartphone, the Nokia 5800, I got in 2009 when I started working. Yes, it's a smartphone, stop arguing!
Now, the Sony Xperia Z is my 13th phone which can do tons more than all of the previous phones (well duh).
Funny how phones evolved in the past 16 years...
The design of its Full HD screen
The first thing I noticed when I got the Xperia Z, was that the screen was HUGE. But after a few weeks now, I can't imagine going back to my tiny old smartphone...
Here are some specs of the screen:

OVERVIEW: Sony Xperia Z FIRMWARE UPDATE! [May 17th, 2013]
After a wonderful surfing day at the Belgian coast, I decided to transfer my videos and photos to my computer. While doing that, Sony Companion (the Xperia manager for Windows) notified me that there was a new update available for my phone.
Current version: 10.1.A.1.434
New version: 10.1.1.A.1.253
Apparently Sony started rolling the firmware out just an hour ago, containing the following updates:
recalibrated white balance (more vivid colors, real black)
camera improvement
LED-light notification toggle
overall performance improvement
fixed wi-fi connection!
I'll still have to discover more...
Here are some screenshots on how Sony Companion looks like when updating the firmware. All of them are in Dutch, but I'll clarify what it says beneath each screenshot.
STEP 1: Detecting your phone
Connect your phone to your computer and start up Sony Companion/Bridge. After detecting your phone, you'll get the notification that you can update to the newest firmware.
STEP 2: Downloading the firmware
After pressing UPDATE in the previous screen, your phone will normally go automatically to 'DFU'-mode (ex-iPhone jailbreakers will know this term). This means your phone is open for updates, but isn't available for you to use.
In the mean time, your firmware will start downloading. Once your firmware is downloaded, press CONTINUE.
STEP 3: Updating the phone
Sony Companion/Bridge will automatically start updating the phone. This will take about 5 minutes. It's very important NOT to DISCONNECT your phone!
STEP 4: Rebooting
When rebooting, you'll get the notifications that:
all your apps are being adjusted to the updated OS
the NFC-firmware has been updated

ULTIMATE processor and gaming performance test!
This week, I tested the Sony Xperia Z on its performance during heavy duty tasks, such as video editing and full 3D-gaming. The SNAPDRAGON QUAD CORE PROCESSOR really lived up to my expectations!

Video editing in Movie Studio on the Xperia Z
With its 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, it's very easy to quickly make a compilation of your travel videos on the go. And there's a stock app for that, called Movie Studio! (Not coincidentally almost the same name as Sony's desktop version?)

Overview:

Making screenshots on Xperia devices without root
Some manufacturers, like Samsung and Sony, add a function to their smartphones which allow users to easily make screenshots. No need for root nor extra apps.
Not everyone knows how to do this, as not all phones have this function. The way to do it also differs from brand to brand, but here's how it's done on Sony Xperia devices:
