9 September 1543 ✧ The coronation of Mary I of Scotland

It was an inauspicious day, being the thirtieth anniversary of the Battle of Flodden, yet an event of the utmost significance. Enveloped in regal robes, the infant sovereign was carried from her nursery in solemn procession, with her lord keepers and officers of state across the green to the church. There she was presented to her people as Sovereign Lady of Scotland and the Isles.

✧ Mary’s first encounter with embroidery and needlework was as a child in France. When she returned to Scotland to rule, she would embroider at her council’s meetings whilst listening and learning the Scottish ways. This period of her life was soon taken up by her duties as Queen, such as trying to please her people and dealing with the various feuds around her, for her to spend much time with the needle. During her imprisonment at Lochleven, she had the time to create, but lacked the materials which were grudgingly and parsimoniously sent to her. Therefore, it was not until her captivity in England that her major works were created.

Richard held Mary close and then gave a small sigh. How could he hate her? He’d never be able to hate her no matter what happened. He loved her too much for him to hate her. “Don’t be daft Mary. I love you too much to hate you. Please don’t leave again…” He said his tone was quiet and he held her close for a moment before he drew away to look her over. Richard touched her cheek gently and allowed his eyes to drink in her every feature. “Come on. Why don’t we go and sit somewhere quiet so that we can talk…” His voice was hopeful, and he still couldn’t let go of her hand. “I don’t want you to go away again. You’ll stay with me, won’t you?” Richard asked.

deliberately, she stayed close, as if afraid that he might at any moment push her away. it had been the worst case scenario she had built up in her head, something that wouldn’t have been terribly far fetched given her sudden disappearance. “ i love you. i do, so much, and i don’t think i’ll ever stop being sorry, ” she sniffled lightly, feeling overwhelmed and silly as she wiped away a few damp tears. “ i am not leaving, if you’ll have me, i don’t want to be away any longer, ” she spoke gently as they sat down in a quiet corner, mary holding his hand tightly. “ you must have so many questions... ”

Richard had been busy when he heard the voice and his whole body froze. His heart felt like it was being squeezed painfully and he bit down on his lip. He turned to look at Mary and many expressions flickered over his face. His expression was wounded for a moment before it melted into something warm. He moved over her to her and then pulled her into a hug. He breathed in the scent of her and wanted to burst into tears. He drew away from her. “Mary….where have you been? What happened? I missed you so much and I tried…I tried to find you,” He said. He kept hold of her hand afraid that she was going to fade away again. He couldn’t bare the thought.

she hesitated still, only out of fear of rejection. long days and nights had been spent thinking of only him, seeing memories of them everywhere. it had been exhausting, haunting and distressing for all of those months. but when he said her name, when he pulled her close to him, her tension fell away from her. mary held on tight, afraid to let go. “ ... sorry ... i’m so sorry, ” came her little murmurs from his shoulder, hugging him close again. “ please don’t hate me, please don’t. ”

it’s fair to say i disappeared for a bit, especially around the time earlier this year that the world went crazyyy. but also, reflecting on that, i got very overwhelmed with trying to keep up with writing here, like it was beginning to feel like a full time job and i never wanted that.

but! i’m feeling better now and ready to try and dive back into this world, so if anyone would like to write, this is a long winded starter call for something small!

it had been too long since she had last seen him, her escape too quick and unplanned to have even said goodbye. it was that which she regretted the most, and not getting to tell him that she loved him one last time. that was why she hesitated on the threshold, knowing that he would have every right to be angry at her. the pub was alive with chatter and life, and mary heard her voice falter.
