9 September 1543 ✧ The coronation of Mary I of Scotland
It was an inauspicious day, being the thirtieth anniversary of the Battle of Flodden, yet an event of the utmost significance. Enveloped in regal robes, the infant sovereign was carried from her nursery in solemn procession, with her lord keepers and officers of state across the green to the church. There she was presented to her people as Sovereign Lady of Scotland and the Isles.
