🩸 — "nothing personal, mate. from what i know of the man.. he's the kind that would try to pull something similar." perhaps his source wasn't as credible as any other, but he'd figured out enough. "excellent. thirsty?"
🧇 → "no offense taken, but it's good to know." it meant he might need to preemptively prepare apologies - but only time would truly tell. "i am actually, do you know where to get something?"

🧇 → "I'm sorry, do you know the mayor? Or the sheriff?" Being new in town was brutal when you felt like an emergencies band aids, sutures, and blood couldn't fix was going on. "Everyone just seems to be... acting a little strange,I think it might be something more serious than a behavioral shift in a small town... maybe a gas leak? Someone needs to know about it."

🧇 → It'd been a long and weird shift on the rig to say the least, and he couldn't quite put his finger on it. Everything just felt... odd. Not particularly good or mad just strange, and as he signed off he thought maybe he'd be able to sleep it off and start again fresh in the morning. Seeing a familiar face he did stop and offer a brief wave. "Elena, right? We met at the Halloween party." Unless she too had an evil twin.
"there must be. you look identical." elena doesn't want to freak him out, but it's also something she'd desperately love to get to the bottom of. stefan having not just an evil clone but then a whole other one on top of it all is giving her a headache at this point. but then again—there's something about the way he carries himself, the earnest way he gazes back at her. the sincere concern he sends her way, a stranger. she finds herself saying, "to be honest, if you haven't already figured it out by now, you might want to ... move back to atlanta. or just—anywhere else. we've had a lot of tragedies, and animal attacks, and—" she shakes her head, a little helplessly. "just ... you seem like a really nice guy. i don't want you or your sister to get hurt here."
🧇 → "must be - i'll have to look into it sometime. wouldn't hurt to have a bit more family around." tom replies as he attempts to shrug off the strange interactions they'd had thus far in good faith. if he did look nearly this similarly to the salvatore, he couldn't blame her for being surprised, but at least they were finally on the same page again. "... really? it seems like a nice little town... and i saw about the animal attacks but my sister and i aren't the hiking type. i have a hard time believing anything bad ever happens in mystic falls - other than obvious accidents.."
🩸 — "correct. stefan, to be exact. you're a real dead ringer for him..." he noted aloud, a bit in disbelief. "no, no—forget it. he doesn't need us fussing over him. forget i said anything at all." but that left enzo to continue to stare, confused, at the others face. maybe he had, in his delirium, messed up some of the features.. but he wasn't the only one tonight.
🧇 → "so i've been told... a few people really didn't believe me and took a lot of convincing." the paramedic chuckled, though he made a note to try and meet this stefan everyone kept mistaking him for. "already forgotten."
"An honor? What a sweet talker you are. Makes me even more excited to visit you later tonight while you're fast asleep." She chuckled under her breath. "Are you enjoying the festivities?"
🧇 → "it's nothing but the pure honest truth." laughing, he answered her question honestly "so far it's been great - a little confusion regarding identity - guess i have a doppelganger running around here."
Damon eyes Tom Avery New-to-Town Paramedic with a steady suspicion, like there's a punchline coming for a joke that's already gone over his head. When none does, he nods, more to himself than anything else. "Ditto," he says after a beat too long. "Where did you say you came from?"
🧇 → at least this guy seemed to understand and believe him without a lot of back and forth. it was much easier this time - and he could only hope the rest of the night held the same. "i didn't - but i'm from atlanta. i'm guessing you're a local?"
"it's okay. it's—a whole thing, i'm fine." elena waves her hands to clear the air, doing her best to dismiss the entire subject before she can make herself miserable with, it turns out, a stranger. "thanks. i'm really sorry. awful first impression." but if he's not stefan ... who is he? and how? he seems kind in a way that reads genuine, true, delivers a swift kick to her chest and to the backs of her eyes with all the emotion that seeming sincerity almost brings. "are you ... related to any salvatores, maybe? distantly?" if this is another freaky doppelganger situation she is going to lose it.
🧇 → tom is willing to let it drop, not to make her open up to a near complete stranger about something that bothered her. "already forgot about it." he's much happier to move along onto more comfortable topics. "not that i know of but anything is possible. you figure you have four different surnames from your grandparents, eight by the time you get to grandparents... there could be some salvatore's in there somewhere." he admitted, willing to believe that somewhere along the line his family line intersected with that of the man she clearly had mistaken him for.
his entire body stiffens, at first, over the sight of him. whispers of dread infecting each corner of his mind and pressing in, suffocating him with memories of what happened the last time he ran into this face—before he narrows his focus down to that human pulse point, that very human scent—and he relaxes. "aren't you the charmer?" a tilt of his head, gaze flicking over the other man with deceptive laziness. but his movements remain predatory as he moves toward him, enters into a gradual circle around him. "and where did you crawl out of?"
🧇 → "so i'm told." tom avery had learned how to charm people from a young age, knew how to be polite and stern, how to work a room or command an emergency scene. it was helpful in many avenues of life, including making new friends in new places, even if they did all act a little... bizarre. "i moved from atlanta... didn't exactly crawl, though I don't mind getting on my knees... given the right circumstances."
🩸 — the small talk did little to pull enzo out of his own head. "where is that damned brother of yours, anyway? causing trouble?" he asked, turning toward the other with what could only be described as disdain.
🧇 → "oh, wait - i think you think i'm someone else. my name is tom avery - but it's happened a couple times tonight so i can't blame you - you're talking about a salvatore, right?" he'd gone down this road more than once tonight - so he thought it was easier to explain now rather than later. "and i don't have a brother but if you're looking for someone here i can let you know if i see anyone who matches the description."
"my whole life," she answers easily, amused—until his next question, anyway. it's bizarrely ... mean, uncharacteristic, and it sobers her back up quickly with the white-hot shot of grief it delivers. makes her rethink this entire conversation even before he essentially re-introduces himself—as very much not stefan, only this time she's starting to believe him. "i don't..." she brushes her hair out of her eyes, stares at him some more, as if enough looking will re-write all the similarities he shares with her ex-boyfriend. "sorry. you look ... just like someone i know." she's reeling, uncomfortable; has the most painful desire to run and find stefan himself, or even damon, or enzo, no longer entirely certain that whoever this new stefan lookalike is truly safe to be around. "welcome to town. i'm the resident idiot."
🧇 → "a local, okay, that's cool." he could only speculate how different growing up here was than growing up in the hustle and bustle of atlanta. still, he notices the shift in her expression following his next question. " — i'm sorry if that's a sensitive question, i didn't mean to upset you." it was too late to take it back, but it wasn't too late to try and apologize for it. as if on cue the pieces come together and the angelic nurse in front of him has finally accepted this isn't a game, and it feels like a relief. "no, it's okay, really. i get it, and you're not an idiot. i just want to make sure the girl inviting me to spend time with her knows it's me and not someone else."
🩸 — "from what i've gathered, yes." it was one of his many, useless questions he had at the beginning. "they like their parties. they haven't anything better to do." he looked the other over. enzo being under the impression that the man stood beside him was, in fact, damon's vampire brother. "never skip a beat, huh, mate?"
🧇 → "must be a lot of work for the town, but it's certainly impressive." the avery listens intently as he explains his perspective on the whole thing, earning a nod in understanding and agreement. "well i try not to."
"You really think so? Thanks, handsome." Sadie grinned at him. "Maybe I'll have to make a pit stop in your dreams tonight."
🧇 → "I'd be so lucky." he teased, a warm smile on his face. "to be haunted by you would be an honor."
"sure thing, really tom. i'm elena." she tilts her head as he continues on about his sister, her smile just growing all the more perplexed. if this is some roleplay type of thing—or maybe a more careful way of laying out his feelings via metaphor? that feels a little like a stefan move, maybe, if he's feeling particularly haunted—he's handling it in a very ... puzzling way. "you're ... going to have to help me figure out how to respond to that. should i ask you some leading questions about your sister?" scrunching her nose, shaking her head, she decides, "we could just go on one of the rides or something, instead? i have time to kill, and i'd kind of like to spend some of it with you."
🧇 → somehow, he wasn't sure she was getting the message, but this seemed like progress. "well it's nice to meet you too, elena. have you lived in the area long?" the conversation is moving along, or so he thinks until they hit another wall as she asks him how he wants her to respond - almost as if this was a game of sort. "i mean... you don't have to? do you have any siblings yourself?" he offered in an attempt to steer the conversation back onto the rails that it had been drug off of again. then she offers the chance to spend some time together which he is not opposed to in the slightest but he has to ask "i'd love to but... i really make sure you know i'm tom, not someone else right? i just moved here from atlanta, i'm a paramedic, and we've never met before."
elena blinks, re-adjusts the basket in her arms for an awkward moment of uncertainty—accept his help? don't?—before slowly handing it over. fighting stefan on almost anything long-term has always been too difficult, and it's obvious he wants to make amends, maybe finally explain what's been going on in his complicated head lately ... right? "is this like a roleplay thing? okay. nice to meet you, tom." she smiles in spite of herself, shakes her head a little at him in an open attempt at disapproval. it doesn't really work, though. "your costume's pretty great, too. gladiator's a good look on you."
🧇 → "no... i'm really tom and obviously the costume is for halloween..." still odd but moving on, choosing to try and laugh it off as she offered an award winning smile that made his heart race and nearly forget the oddities of the conversation thus far. "thanks, i was pretty proud of it - if you ask my sister though it's not scary enough. she's also the one that said i couldn't go in my work clothes so go figure. one thing about four year olds is they certainly have opinions."
Damon blinks, because what is his brother's deal these days? "Para- what? Did you hit your head? I'm not doing a roleplay bit with you." That's a dumb way to apologize, even for Stefan, but the gladiator of it all isn't promising. A little matchy matchy with a certain original family (not that he can really talk, but at least Damon's is subtle). "You and Klaus kiss and make up? Is that what this is about?"
🧇 → another swing, and another hard miss. "i was just trying to make conversion..." it wasn't an apology, and he didn't feel like he owed the guy one, instead choosing to be kind but firm. "- look, i really think you have me confused with someone else, i don't even know anyone named klaus. you're not the first one to mix us up, but i'm not whoever you think i am... tom avery, i'm new to town, and a paramedic which explains my first comment." on another note, he was silently glad he wasn't whoever he was being mistaken for - clearly he'd left an impression on people he'd like to avoid. "still love the costume though."
she got here way too early in order to help with some of the set up, per caroline as always, so there's still a while to kill before she needs to be on the lookout for enzo. for right now, then, she focuses on getting a little more help in: like dragging a big basket of extra spooky decor around from booth to booth, ride to ride, placing fake spiders and tiny plastic jack 'o lanterns all over the place. until she's half convinced caroline might even groan at her later about the overkill, but whatever. she's trying really, really hard to actually have a nice time tonight.
so of course she crashes into stefan and nearly drops everything. she blows out a breath, eyes him, trying to gauge his real mood. "is that sarcasm?" the last time she'd seen him, he was ... bizarrely temperamental. and now here he is, looking unfairly good in his costume, once again playing the role of nice guy? "can you just quit messing with my head? if you're punishing me, i get it, okay—message received."
🧇 → is that sarcasm? an odd response, but with her arms full a collision would have been more than a slight inconvience so he tried not to hold it against her. her next statement however made even less sense, and he furrowed his brow and tried to piece it together before deciding to reintroduce himself. "i'm sorry, i think we've got our wires crossed here, let's just start over." he'd rather not burn his bridges when he'd just gotten to this little slice of heaven. holding out a hand, either to help her with the load or to shake her hands he follows up with "i'm tom avery, it's nice to meet you - can i lend a hand? it's the least i could do after nearly running you over."
