LAURA’S RIGHT SNEAKER has a sticker peeling on its side . it’s close to falling off she notices . the top part , curling downward in its defeat to gravity . she frowns at it , noticing Ariadne’s return to the room at the same time . she’d liked it , a little white horse with a horn on its head . Ariadne had said it was called a unicorn . they weren’t real though . Laura leans down and pushes it back in place with her thumb before taking a precisely cut part of the sandwich , ❝ gracias. ❞ the thanks comes out funny against the peanut butter as she looks to the other woman expectantly. she should eat too . it’s good to eat .

the door slides open – it’s been a long day; any day involving refugees always is what with the paper work involved, the talks with command about next steps, mission reports & testimonials. much like bones with critical patients, his mind always wanders to where they’re boarded in guest quarters, or cared for in medical. he wants to help, to ensure their safety & protection, he worries. it’s all EMOTIONALLY DRAINING already, but for those ( rare ) cases involving children? well, those are even worse. the sight that greets him upon entering his suite isn’t one he’s expecting, but it’s welcome. HOW she got in here is beyond him. he’s not about to stop her, though. far be it from him to do so. so he takes a moment & watches with arms crossed casually over his chest, leaning against the doorframe. “Laura, right?” he asks gently, calmly.

THERE’S A SWIFT sound then . whizzing pressure , sucking through a sudden crack in the wall . the door’s opened , she realizes . snapping her attention behind her to find someone standing there now . a man , the one who came for them . he’d been covered in dust then . soft petals of ash and horror covering his hair , turning blonde stands into grey ones . Laura remembers him . if simply for nothing but his eyes . blue like the sky from in the garden . on instinct she grips the shirt tighter to her body . red scratched and bruised knuckles crowning the edges of the fabric in her hands . it’s a shirt colored like the one he’s wearing right now . he doesn’t wear a white coat like they did . after a moment of staring , Laura relaxes a bit , shifting her weight from one foot to the other before nodding at him .

LAURA SEES HIM . arrow man who’s lost his bow . she pivots it , stroking the string with her knuckle as it sits angled in the ground . he looks like he wants it back . desperate maybe . Laura gives him a passive expression and then shakes her head lazily , picking it up . she wants to know how it works , slinging her arm through it like a backpack before proceeding to leave with it .

wood scrapes the floor, she pushes from her seat and shuts the book; cover heavy, it’s a thick sound against the pages. the niceties are uncommon. unknown and nonexistent where she comes from. but she trusts her instincts to follow, right behind the other woman as she reaches the stairs, ❝ qué comemos? i like the cereal. ❞

wide eyed, she slowly folds the map back against her chest. credits, lots of them, should have afforded her silence. but in her long gaze, Laura can find no malice in her question, ❝ family. ❞ she says quickly, backing up to take a seat against the row of seats there, ❝ i must find my family. ❞

fingers along the desk, she makes a point to touch everything. a folded gold shirt. two bottles, one empty. a set of books, real ones. this man had a lot of things, etching a tiny smile on her face. Laura takes the shirt into her hands, ignoring the sound of the door opening somewhere behind her.
