You can already tell they’re setting up for how Essek is going to interact with Caleb later on. Essek, jaded from his experience with Trent, wanting nothing more than to block out the whims of another Empire wizard. Caleb, staring at a chalkboard covered in notes about the beacon and maybe even allusions to Typhros. We see Caleb pick up a piece of chalk and Essek tenses. Caleb begins to piece together what he can see is missing in Essek’s notes. There is no malice behind it, only a curiosity. Someone who thinks of him as a friend. Essek wants to use these people, but for a moment, he lets his guard down. And that’s when Jester goes in for the hug
