Lau’s Knowledge

One of the ‘running gags’ with Lau is that he would act as if he knew precisely what was going on only to later ask. On one hand, it always gave the impression he was someone who could easily pretend and put on a show, but many readers (myself included) always thought it was a hint that Lau knew more that he revealed. He enjoyed playing dumb when he was more fully aware of the situation.

Chapter 147 is no different in that regard. He rescues our!Ciel while joking about the price on his head. Later, he asks what our!Ciel had done, and uses the situation to gain information.

After learning about what has been happening, Lau then offers solutions. On the surface, his solutions seem very sensible and logical. He suggests that our!Ciel might run - either to India or China and that he (our!Ciel) could take on a new identity.

Again, this would seem perfectly logical to Lau. After all, he should have no idea about what happened to Agni. The number of people with that knowledge is quite limited at this point after all.

Of course, Lau’s suggestions do have an effect on our!Ciel. He savagely devours the food at the table and announces that he IS Earl Ciel Phantomhive.

This appears to please Lau as he claps and said that our!Ciel is once again the earl he signed up to business with.

This whole exchange brings up some interesting points. It appears that Lau might have been doing this on purpose. He wanted our!Ciel to be his old self again, and he was able to do just. If this is true, it would seem he knew our!Ciel well enough to know what to say. Lau was able to snap our!Ciel out of his stupor while acting polite and offering what would seem reasonable solutions.

If this was on purpose, then he did a better job than Sebastian was able to do in the most recent chapters - not that Sebastian appeared to try to do anything to help our!Ciel’s mental state recently.

There’s also something else to consider. Lau had been told why our!Ciel was in trouble, so he knew that our!Ciel had taken on his brother’s identity. He was well aware that our!Ciel had already tried to live as someone else, and that’s why he was now in trouble. It stands to reason that he might have expected for our!Ciel to react to that strongly. It was most likely why he suggested it.

So why India? On one hand, it was simply reasonable. Our!Ciel does know a prince who, up until quite recently, was was a close friend. Lau should have no reason to know that anything might be wrong with their friendship.

But what if he does?

It has always seemed that Lau has known more than he should. What if he does know for some reason or he might have some reason to suspect something is wrong with Prince Soma? He could have brought India on purpose for the same reason he brought up the idea of living as someone else. He could have done it because he suspected it would have the reaction that it did. After all, he brought up India BEFORE China.

Of course, that could all be coincidental. Lau suggesting taking on a new identity was the most triggering factor after all. He brought up India only because it made sense as a suggestion and there just happened to be an issue with it.

Either way, there’s still the question of Lau’s knowledge.

So if a teenager is at school for roughly 8 hours, and they are doing homework for 6+ hours, and they need AT LEAST 9 HOURS OF SLEEP FOR THEIR DEVELOPING BRAINS, then they may have 0-1 hours for other activities like eating, bathing, exercise, socializing (which is actually incredibly important for emotional, mental, and physical health, as well as the development of skills vital to their future career and having healthy romantic relationships among other things), religious activities, hobbies, extra curriculars, medical care of any kind, chores (also a skill/habit development thing and required by many parents), relaxation, and family time? Not to mention that your parents may or may not pressure you to get a job, or you might need to get one for economic reasons.
