Truthfully I don’t know. Literally anything about how aristocrats work. I know how to navigate things politically, and I understand that things DO happen, but I don’t understand why.

I’ve always known about the arrangement between you and your brother, but I find it disgusting at best. My siblings, may they rest, would agree.

I would say something like “not to be rude,” but I do intend to be rude, actually.

Apparently, the established precedent for our "arrangement" (as you so tactfully put it, so I'm stealing the term) came from the old tales of yore, the ones that we can all recognize as fairytales today and explain from a scientific standpoint why they couldn't actually work. People used to think that that stuff was true, after all: that there were so few sentient things beyond the Fusang that siblings would do that with one another, and that the thrones of kings were inherited from these first few sentient things that we called divine.

But, both of those ideas, together? It creates this idea of divine right to rule that is gauged by how many times removed from some divine ancestor we are, and that's measured in how many people are you related to without this divine bloodline. Solarians, a long time ago, realized that the only way to game that system involved intermarriage within established families.

Keep in mind, this was a LONG time ago. We now understand the repercussions of inbreeding and why that is a bad idea, which is why our arrangement is so scandalizing and not really common (I actually think many of the Judicial Officials in Shang had forgotten that no-one actually made our arrangement illegal). And this would, of course, be a grossly negative step for our clan... had Fuxi and I ever planned on having heirs.

Spoiler alert: we weren't ever going to. The initial plan was to remain married until our dear Mother passed, and then amicably split and figure out our lineage from there. Tianhuo happened first, though, and I couldn't trust anyone else to take care of Fuxi when he first got really ill. So his wife, I remained.

... Sorry for the length, that turned into a bit of a ramble.
