@xylavillanueva
in all honesty, jude’s still shocked xyla isn’t going to the party with someone else. arm candy, a random hookup, anything, really. he’s glad for it–he hadn’t wanted to go alone and asking zelda to come with him had felt just a little too much like asking her on a date–but he’s still left wondering why in the back of his mind. way in the back of his mind once he’s had his first two drinks.
he’s just dragged her outside with him to the smoking area so they can share a spliff he’d rolled ahead of time, and there’s been an utterly wicked smirk growing on his face as he watches the ferris wheel nearby and notes xyla’s semi-frequent nervous and distasteful glances at it. “xyla,” he says in an overly casual tone of voice, and because he’s drunk and tends towards theatrics in that state, he takes a long drag off the joint before continuing with his thought. “you realize this is going to be the night i get you on a ferris wheel, don’t you? there’s nothing you can do about it, it’s happening, so i suggest you begin your mental preparations now.” he hands the smoking roach over to her to finish off and lifts a brow. “finish that off and then up we go, dove. if you’re really lucky i won’t pay whoever’s running it to stop us at the top for a while.” // @xylavillanueva
Nude pantyhose tied together Xyla’s sparkly little number, but did nothing to protect her from the bitter February air. She had been making the most out of her night inside the warhouse, bounding from bar to the photo booths, and to the lounge before Jude tracked her down once again and dragged her outside for a smoke and some air. Though the alcohol coursing through her veins kept her warm to an extent, Xyla couldn’t help but wrap her coat tightly around her scantily clad body as she huddled close to Jude. “I knew you had other intentions when you said ‘come out for a smoke!’” Xy exclaimed, shaking a perfectly manicured finger in his direction before taking the joint. “Anytime you say my name that way, I know I’m in for some trouble. This sing-song thing you got going on right now is cute, monkey, but if you think its cute enough for me to get in that death machine, you are wrong,” she continued, pulling her eyes from Jude’s mischievous smirk to the hot air ballon shaped platforms.
xyla villanueva living her Water For Elephants dream
judemrrsn·:
“oh the execution, is that right?” jude parrots her words with a lifted brow, a smirk teasing at the corner of his lips. “by forking over more money you mean, of course, forking over any money considering your doting boyfriend did it utterly free of charge.” he flexes his hand in an attempt to escape the grip she has on his wrist and with enough force he certainly could have freed himself, but even that is a little more violent than jude is by nature, so he simply allows her to hold his hand at bay. probably for the best, since his immediate inclination was to tickle her, and knowing xyla he could very well have gotten a tongue-lashing for it. the truth is, he’s still very much enamored with that tattoo. he’s given tattoos to significant others before, and in their own way they still affect him–he can’t help thinking about one or two of them walking around england, if that’s where they still are, with a tattoo he’d given them by hand even though he hasn’t seen them in years. tattoos never fade, that’s the point. but maybe there’s another point, at least for jude: meaning. symbolism. documenting bits of your life that were important at the time, even if they seem less important in the present. the difference with xyla is that he still sees her, still sleeps with her, and still has to see that tattoo and contemplate what it means to them now. it is, and always will be, a piece of himself he’s left on her skin.
taking the bottle of wine back from her and once again allowing his free hand to fall to her thigh–the shape of it warm and familiar beneath his fingers–he lets out a short laugh at her question. he’s about to answer her, but then another name comes out of her mouth, one that jude has been spending the last three months thinking about in a most melancholy fashion. andrea. he’s taken by surprise at the mention of her and his expressive face shows that, nor does he make much attempt to hide it. more than anything he’s curious where it came from or why xyla would be thinking about her, and he shoots her a quizzical look. “yeah,” he says slowly, passing the bottle back. “i still have her number. what is this, like, your way of trying to discreetly ask how i’m doing? or are you just taunting me as usual? because i am doing quite well, thank you very much. so well, in fact, that i’ve managed to find my newest infatuation, can you believe it took me three months? probably a record.”
"Yes, but if I remember correctly, I cooked a really fuckin' great homemade dinner that night as a thank you for stabbing me a million times with a tiny needle. I also let you tattoo me in the first place, so that was already a big deal," she replied pointedly, and eyebrow arching in his direction. "And don't even try and act like that steak and the Gnocchi weren't amazing, 'cause we both know they were." While a homemade meal wasn't something to bat an eye over, Xyla cooking came around as often as a blue moon. For quite some time, she chalked her lack of experience in the kitchen to her busy schedule and all the meetings she had over dinner and drinks; however, it was because she found eating alone to be quite sad. Picking out all the ingredients, and carefully ensuring all flavours complimented the other, only to have nobody to share it with at the end of the day was unsettling. Xyla grew up in a busy, bustling household with sisters always in her business and a mother who needed to stick her nose in everyone's business. Home-cooked dinners were part of her childhood and only shared with those she cared the most for. Therefore, while homemade dinners weren't extravagant or anything out of the ordinary for most, to Xyla, it was her way of showing gratitude and how important the person was to her. And if she sent you home with leftovers, that meant you captured her heart.
The TV in the background acted as white noise for their conversation, and she watched Butters settle lull to sleep out of the corner of her eye. Jude had been over so many times in their years of friendship that his presence didn't even excite the small pup anymore - it was normal. However, as Jude began to speak once again, Xyla was pulled from her thoughts. "A little bit of both," she began with a shrug of her shoulders. "Wouldn't be me if I didn't make fun of you a little, would it? But really, are you doing alright? No drunk texts at 3 am? No terrible comments on her latest Instagram posts? No 'spontaneous' visits to her work? You really alright? 'Cause if not, then you need a little bit more of this," she said, holding out the bottle to him. While she wasn't interested in the details of his latest break up, she was, of course, curious about where his head was in the last couple of months.
Breakups were never fun, even if you were the one initiating them. Xyla expected him to begin a tangent about how he was doing great, focussing on his work at the parlour and living his best life. However, as the words' newest infatuation' left his lips, she stopped dead in her tracks. "Newest infatuation?" She repeated curiously, sitting up in her seat and pulling her legs from his lap. Xyla carefully tucked her legs under her and curled up against the cushions of the couch, letting her head rest on an unusually large pillow. It felt strange to be in such an intimate position with Jude now that she knew he was beginning to fall for another person. However, sitting with her legs on his was far more innocent than the multitude of other activities they routinely partook in. "You should win an award for your remarkable ability to bounce back after relationships. Or, you know, you should teach a class, like a 'how to get over your ex 101' style seminar. I'm sure you'd get thousands of applications, and you could be rich by tomorrow," Xyla began. Though she tried her best to keep the conversation light and fun, she couldn't help but let her curiosities seep in. After all, she'd always wondered how long it took for him to bounce back after their break up — less than three months, apparently.
judemrrsn:
this–being with xyla–is not only easy but safe. not many people could say they’ve been through what he and xyla have been through, making it what he believes to be a well and truly unbreakable friendship. they’ve been friends, lovers, partners, they’ve broken up, they’ve fought, they’ve told each other their deepest secrets, and they’ve come back from long periods of not speaking, periods when jude really thought it was over. but for as bad as it ever got between them, nothing ever turned out to be irreparable, and now, on the other side of all that, he really believes there’s nothing they can’t figure out. and when you didn’t have any real family because you’d left them in england and never looked back, this was as close as you got. “my attitude has no intention of getting back on that subway tonight,” he retorts, taking the wine from her with his free hand and downing a large swig of it. in his rarely-humble opinion there’s no such thing as a good-tasting wine, but it’s the price one pays to get drunk and jude has never been a complainer. besides, xyla doesn’t have the cheap stuff, so it’s not all that bad. “i would never expect you to get tipsy without me. who do you think i am? chivalry may be dead but i’m not.” he leans forward to put out the joint in an ash tray that’s only on her coffee table because he’d put it there and insisted it remain, considering he’s there so often. the wine, however, he keeps in hand, owing to the fact that xyla is ordering their food on her laptop. he smiles to himself as he watches her do it, knowing she doesn’t need to ask him what he wants because it’s either saved in her ordering history or–even better–she already knows what he wants.
“weird,” jude hums when she’s finally given him her attention again, “i distinctly remember asking you never to bring that particular tattoo up again. must’ve dreamt it.” he hands her the bottle back and lets out an exaggerated sigh as he leans back into the couch cushion, fingers moving absently through his hair. “so it’s this huge guy, right? an absolute unit. rides a motorcycle. he’s got, like, the world’s largest collection of zits on his back you’ve ever seen, and he pitches me this bizarre idea about two sharks killing each other. wants it to take up his whole back. now you tell me if that’s worse than a panda eating a taco. of course nothing matches your tattoo, isn’t that right, dove?” he says with a shit-eating grin, and he reaches over to poke her through her shirt right where he knows it is–he’d put it there. “how’s it holding up, anyway? do we need a touchup?”
As Jude begins retelling his encounter with his client, Xyla brings the bottle of wine back up to her lips, taking a rather generous swig. It was strange to be in the position they were now in - broken up, friends, but still sleeping together. Everything felt both completely normal and disorienting and wrong at the same time. She didn't understand why or how it worked - but it did. However, their situation was something she tried not to think about often in fear of over-thinking their complicated, yet smooth-running relationship, she couldn't help it as she sat there watching him describe the gruesome details and imagine the constellation of zits that adorned his back. Xy shook her head, bringing her back to reality. "Had it not been for the zit-popping, pus-pooling situation you so graciously describe for me, I would have still gone with the Panda Taco. But I'm sure you'll find a way to incorporate all the lovely little ridges on his back into the design of the tattoo. It'll be a hit, I know it," she said, emphasizing how unpleasant the process sounded while trying to be a supportive friend. As Jude reached around her side to poke at her tattoo, Xyla playfully grabbed his hand, stopping it in place. "It's fine, thank you very much. It's starting to look more like a treble clef than a flower, but I suppose that's got nothing to do with its actual design, but rather its execution," Xy taunted, her fingers gently curling around his wrist. "I should have forked over more money and gone somewhere else." Her little tattoo was kind of a secret that she kept only to herself, and those that earned the pleasure of seeing her naked. It was tucked on the right side of her ribcage and was only about an inch, maybe in and a half big. If you were to take a quick glance at it, it appeared to be nothing more than a flower with a long, swirly stem. But to the trained eye, the stem formed a cursive J. J for Jude. Xy always hated the idea of getting a tattoo of someone's name, especially significant others, and she often blamed this decision on being young, dumb, and completely infatuated.
"When are you going to let me tattoo you?" Xy asked, flipping the attention away from her and back onto him. "Most men couldn't rock a butterfly tattoo, but I think with my attention to detail, and a few pointers from you, it would look great right there on your shoulder. Or, you could get an obnoxious pair of red lips on your neck. I could be the model. Or maybe Andrea could? You still have her number right?" she continues, watching his face carefully for any sort of reaction. His first girlfriend, well ex-girlfriend, after their short relationship was someone they once talked about. A lot. Although Xy would never, and had never, let Jude see it, Andrea wasn’t her favourite topic of conversation. And though she didn’t typically bring her up in conversation, this time it just slipped out.
xyla villanueva.
judemrrsn:
jude lets out a boisterous laugh at xyla’s quick retort, breaking his facade of disappointment just like that. “that is a bold claim to make,” he tells her, eyebrows lifting, “some people i know might argue there’s no such thing as too early for sex.” of course, it wouldn’t have mattered if he’d been a booty call; theirs is the most unique friendship he’s ever had the pleasure (and sometimes great pain) of being involved in, and one of the reasons for it is that xyla snarks right back at him every time. and not only that, she calls him out on his shit. it’s the most natural thing in the world when she sits down on the couch beside him (because he’d very purposefully taken the spot he knows she likes) and stretches her legs over his lap. the hand not dealing with his joint falls to one thigh, curling absent-mindedly around it with all the familiarity of a lover’s touch. had he not been on the inside of their relationship, he might have scoffed at it. for two people to have been such close friends for two years, date, break up, and then start sleeping together again more than a year later…it sounded like a recipe for disaster, yet jude has found it to be anything but. she’s not wrong, therefore, to say that he truly would have come running regardless of what she wanted. “you’re such a manipulator,” he laments with a pouted lower lip, fingers grazing the inside of her thigh. “calling me over on a whim to entertain you and then dragging me for coming. is that how you treat all your friends? pitiful.”
he can’t help laughing again as she hands the joint back and he makes a show of rolling his eyes. “my attitude just took the subway all the way here and isn’t leaving until well into tomorrow morning, love,” he says, and he knows she knows he means it. whether or not they end up sleeping together, he has every intention of imposing himself on her for the night now that he’s here. “but y’know what? takeout, dessert, and getting wine drunk sounds perfect, so you can count me in, my only stipulation being that we get thai.”
A laugh bubbled from Xyla's lips as Jude pouts at her from his seat. "I wouldn't have to drag you if you didn't give me a reason to call you such a buzzkill. You should know by now that when I call you, I'm looking for some fun, someone to cause trouble with. All work and no play makes Jude Morrison boring as fuck," she teased as she settled further into her seat, making herself comfortable with her legs on top of his. For a fleeting moment, Xyla went back to the countless afternoons they spent watching movies, entire series' of shows, or just working on their respective projects on the couch, and a smile threatened her lips. It was always so easy hanging out with Jude, and during their months of apart she missed it. But she was thankful they were working back to what they considered 'normal.' Even if it was utterly abnormal to everyone else. Reaching for the joint, she brought it back up to her lips. She wasn't a smoker by any means, but after years hanging out with Jude, she had grown accustomed to the smell and learned that two hits were more than enough for her to loosen up and relax. "Well, unless your attitude wants to hop back on the subway and go home, I insist you catch up," she says before reaching for the half-empty bottle of wine sitting on the coffee table. Xy takes a sip from the bottle before handing it to him, her eyes watching his expression for any sign of hesitation. "I can't be buzzed while you're completely sober." Reaching for her laptop, she places it on her lap and scrolls through the seemingly endless options for take-out online. In a city as big and diverse as New York, the sky was the limit, and if they wanted, she was sure they could find food from every single country available at their fingertips. After quickly searching for her favourite restaurant, she ordered their go-to meals and hit pay. The great thing about being with Jude again was that things just fell into place. There were no questions or worrying about what the other thought; it was like riding a bike again. They just knew what to do.
“So tell me about this terribly design you have to draw up for your client with zero taste,” Xyla prodded as she closed her laptop. “They can’t possibly want anything worse than the tattoo you once did of a Panda eating a taco.”
judemrrsn:
of all the relationships jude has had in his life, the shortest and the most complicated had been xyla. in fact, it’s still xyla. he’s never been a bitter ex, but that doesn’t mean he usually makes a habit of becoming friends–close friends–with the people he’s dated. and as if that wasn’t weird enough, they’d managed to find their way into a very unpredictable fuck buddies routine, post-relationship. but he and xyla had been friends even before they’d started sleeping together, and maybe that’s part of it. the romance thing hadn’t worked out, maybe, but the chemistry is still there, and anyway, he likes hanging out with her. he suspects he’ll always feel a little soft for her, and that’s something he’s simply gotten used to.
“my tarantula legs have no effect on the speed of the subway, love,” jude greets her in return, moving past her into the apartment with all the ease entitled to him as a close friend and past lover. “what’s the occasion, then?” he drops down onto the couch she’d just abandoned and removes a joint from behind his ear, though he doesn’t light it yet. “i hope it’s a good one because i was supposed to be working on some bloody awful design for a client coming in tomorrow.” he pauses with his hand in his pocket, fingers wrapped around the old bic lighter he’d stuffed in there haphazardly before leaving. “this wasn’t a booty call, was it?” now that he thought about it, the fact she’d had him come here rather than meeting somewhere around the city pointed in that direction. “because honestly, xy, i’d expect a modicum more class than that from you. unbelievable.” he finally lights the joint, leans backs into the couch, and hands it out to her. “or are you just trying to get high for free? be honest.”
“Don’t get ahead of yourself, Jude. It’s only 9 pm, which is far too early for anyone to be hooking up on a Saturday night. The only people having sex at this hour are old married couples who’ve finally put their kids to sleep,” Xyla quipped back as she locked the door and made her way back to the couch. She couldn’t resist shooting Jude a little glare when she noticed him sitting in her favourite spot on the couch, but quickly moved to the other end where she made herself comfortable and stretched out her legs towards him. “But it seems like it doesn’t really matter what I called you over for, does it? You came anyways,” she added smugly, her lips curling up into a smirk as she watched him take a hit from the joint. It was so easy to be around Jude that Xyla often forgot that ex’s didn’t usually do this sort of thing. Whenever she mentioned his name around her friends, coworkers or even her family, she was bombarded with questions about how weird it must be, or how much tension there was between then. But even after their breakup, it seemed like things went back to the way things were before they’d gotten together. Well, plus sex. That was something that continued to bring them together in more ways than one. Making herself comfortable, she reached for the joint and took a hit, her nose scrunching up as the harsh smoke filled her lungs.
“It’s Saturday night and there was no way I was spending it home alone, watching the Bachelor and getting wine drunk. I thought you were the perfect person to help liven up my night but it turns out you’ve turned into a complete buzzkill in the last 5 days,” Xy taunted before handing it back over to him. “I was gonna order some take-out and dessert, and watch movies all night, but I’m not sure I want your little attitude ruining my fun.”
It was rare for Xyla not to be buried neck-deep in work, and even more rare for her not to have plans on a Saturday night. But as the weekend rolled around, and she quickly emptied her inbox of client emails and go through hours of conference calls, Xyla Villanueva found herself sitting at home with nowhere to go. It was a strange feeling, and the silence was almost eerie, but given her busy lifestyle and typically jam-packed schedule, it was one she learned to cherish. However, being alone was never something she’d been very good at.
Xyla and Jude had a whirlwind relationship. They had known each other for years and were always happy to be in the presence of each other, regardless if they were hanging out at home or out on the town. They joked, had real conversations, indulged in New York City’s most exquisite delectable meals and drank the fanciest of liquors the city had to offer - it was an incredible friendship. However, as they got closer and began spending more time together, it was only a matter of time before they accepted what was in front of them, took a leap of faith and made it official. Though their relationship was short-lived, they miraculously managed to resuscitate their friendship and continue as two, mature adults who have seen each other naked and occasionally still do. It was because of this unique bond that Xy called on Jude to keep her company that evening.
Upon hearing three short knocked at the door, Xy hopped up from her seat on the couch and pulled open the door. “You know, for someone with such long legs, you walk damn slow,” she scolded before flashing him a bright grin and stepping out of the way.

10 am on a Sunday morning was the crack of dawn for most New Yorkers; however, for Xyla Villanueva, 10 am meant she’d already been awake for hours. She had already taken Butters out for a walk, tidied up her apartment and answered a number of panicked emails from clients by 9:30, leaving her with zero responsibilities for the rest of the day. The idea of laying in bed all day, starting a number of television shows on Netflix or maybe hitting the gym sounded good in her head. In fact, it was probably what she needed to mentally and physically reset for another stress-filled week. But considering days away from responsibilities were few and far between, resuscitating her suffering social life was exactly how she wanted to spend the rest of the day.
After quickly packing her wallet, charger and other essentials into her purse, Xy darted out her door, leaving a sleeping Butters on the couch. Sunday brunch was one the best, if not the best meal of the week. It meant being able to indulge in both the sweet treats of weekend breakfasts such as French Toast and Pancakes, while also incorporating all the delicious tastes from lunch, therefore creating Eggs Benedicts and even Chicken & Waffle. Upon arrival at Bubby’s in Tribeca, she picked out a total of four dishes, two savoury and two sweet, as well as a couple drinks to-go from their vast mouth-watering selection. Before long, Xy arrived at the front door of their house, her arms full of breakfast foods, coffee and juices and her stomach grumbling under her coat.
“Rise and shine! Get your ass out of bed, put on some pants and open your door!” Xy yelled from the other side of the door, her knuckles rapping against the wood as much as possible. “I have eggs and waffles and I’m not afraid to eat them all.”
