I was so afraid of reading “The Long Game” because so many people said it made them hate Shane. And I was very very scared that I would be mad at my favorite character from “Heated Rivalry”.
Mild spoilers and me rambling under the cut
Steeling myself, I went into it and… why are we hating on Shane? Yes, Ilya suffers, but a huuuuuge plot point is that Ilya doesn’t say anything about it. And a huuuuuge part of Shane is that he is very very bad at reading people’s emotions, including his own.
How the f*ck is THAT guy of all people supposed to know what others feel if they don’t tell him? Maybe I relate too hard here because I am also very bad at reading people and need someone to tell me what they feel and if they need something. At least if they want me to know lol
Yes, there was an imbalance because Shane had friends who knew and Ilya hadn’t. Honestly, I lost track of who learned when and how, but most people from Shane’s side figured it out themselves if I recall correctly? David walked in on them, Yuna learned because of that situation and Hayden showed some surprising detective skills and figured it out. I don’t remember if Rose guessed it or if Shane told her. So Shane had people in his corner who knew, Ilya not so much, but can we blame Shame for going wtf when Ilya announced that he came out to a guy they both thought was an asshole five minutes before? That WAS a wild choice that Ilya made pretty spontaneously. It turned out fine, but I understand Shane’s concern and shock here.
Yes, it’s understandable that Ilya wants to do couple stuff. But they had a very detailed plan how to go about their relationship (and Shane really really is a plan-guy). So Ilya wanting to bring him along to a party? A party of Ilya’s team that Shane is not a part of (atp)? What other answer than no would have made sense? At the very least it would have caused some speculation why Ilya would bring a member of a rival team.
Now, the reader, having witnessed the Centaurs from Ilya’s POV, knows they’d be good about it. We know they would probably guess the truth, but wouldn’t out them, wouldn’t discriminate against them. But Shane, our little ball of anxiety, does NOT know them. For him, they are strangers, no reason to see them as any different from the hockey players, throwing homophobic slurs and jokes around. I understand Ilya’s wish to show off his cute boyfriend, but he sprung that on Shane and then got mad when Shane said no.
And no, I’m not blaming Ilya either. The two of them are in a shitty situation. Neither is the villain. The homophobes in the league and among the fans are.
I’m really getting flashbacks to Good Omens 2 when people were hellbent (hah!) on making this a Crowley vs. Aziraphale situation, the latter being the villain for most, when the villain had always been the higher ups in Heaven and Hell.
Similar, The Long Game is not Shane vs. Ilya but Shane and Ilya vs. Homophobic Hockey World. I don’t know why people want to make Shane the villain.
Apparently the author made some comments, saying Shane, unlike Ilya, is not very smart?* I heard this second or third hand so I’m not gonna take any guesses about the context or possible interpretations. But maybe that encouraged people to think Ilya is the “smart one” so he must be right about everything? Or maybe it’s a variant of main character bias because so many key moments are shown from Ilya’s PoV? I don’t know. I only know that I don’t understand hating on Shane at all.
All that is not me saying Shane never did anything wrong. He did. So did Ilya. As people do. But to paint this as poor Ilya and evil Shane is wild.
Long story short: If like me, you hesitate to read TLG because you don’t want to end up hating Shane, don’t worry. If you actually pay attention to what is happening (and what is NOT happening like healthy communication), if you remember the defining traits of those characters and the world they live in, you won’t end up hating Shane or Ilya.
*Which is crazy, considering he did real estate business as a side hustle, led a hockey team to several victories, and was the one who came up with the very elaborate “how to ease the public into the fact that we don’t hate each other” plan in the middle of the night. And no, I’m not saying that Ilya is NOT smart, just that nothing in any of the two books made me think of either of them as being notably more intelligent than the other.

- getting her brother to invite him out onto his boat and then killing him and dumping him in the ocean and saying he got drunk and fell off.
- get tboned with him in the passenger seat and then once he was in the hospital theres all kinds of easy ways to kill him like not washing my hands after a poop and then touching his wound casually.

- take him on a hike thats locally notorious for a rapid otter attacking hikers and once he had rabies I could just kill him any ol way and say self defense.

I fucking hate the antipsych movement for scaring people into thinking that they're better off committing suicide than ever trying to contact professionals
Hi, I’ve been someone who had to deal with shit mental healthcare (that probably permanently damaged my brain) and am now with great mental healthcare (which helps me live with what I have).
Psych meds are powerful agents and using them without proper guidance or knowledge can seriously fuck you up (e.g. serotonin syndrome). No system also equals no consistency. Without a system, the pill that could help you today can fail to help or even harm you tomorrow. The ideal relationship however should be partnership and informed choice between you and the care team.
I am able to stay awake because the prescription got transferred to my psychiatrist.
I do think that if both you and your doctor have agreed that you need the meds with informed knowledge of the risks, it shouldn’t be so hard to acquire them (controlled substances act, my be-loathed).
Similarly, therapy and lifestyle interventions also have risks and benefits. This is absolutely talked about less compared to the medications, but it can still have psychological effects. Notably, certain therapies are prescribed as cookie cutter approaches when it doesn’t work for a lot of people even if it does help others. What we need is better classification on who these therapies will help vs who these therapies will not help (ie who need different approaches).
Currently intervention cannot help without its risks and side effects (even if they’re mild), and anyone who says otherwise is lying.
There are good professionals out there just as there are bad professionals out there. But as someone mentioned before, saying all psych care is bad is throwing out babies with bath water. Truly good psych care comes from integration with an individual and their support networks (if included) through informed consent, not opposed.
