Fun Facts
● Orcas are dolphins and dolphins are whales.
● Orcas are the largest member of the dolphin family.
● Orcas have the second largest brain in the WORLD! (Sperm whales have the largest)
● Orcas have been around for approximately six million years. That's 30 times longer than humans!
● Orcas in the wild typically live for 50-90 years!
● Orcas don't chew their food! They instead tear it into chunks or just swallow it whole.
● A group of orcas is called a pod.
● A baby orca is called a calf.
● Normally orcas hold their breath for 3-5 minutes, but are capable of holding their breath for around 15!
● Orcas are social, emotional, and highly intelligent animals, because of this they do seem to experience grief when losing part of their pod.
● Orcas only allow one half of their brains to sleep at a time to avoid drowning in their sleep. The other half of their brain stays awake so they can breathe while also looking out for anything that may be dangerous!
● The name "killer whale" stems from people originally calling Orcas "whale killers" due to their hunting of larger whales.
● A certain population of Iberian orcas has been damaging and ramming boats. They have successfully sunk at least 5 boats and about 600 boats have been attacked. This is NOT to harm humans as not a single person has ever been harmed in these attacks. It is speculated that it may have started from a traumatic event a orca had with a boat, but now it's more of a playful fad. It seems the orcas in this area have also started to use boats to teach their young how to hunt. (to clarify this is NOT malicious behavior)
Important Facts
● Humans have contributed to multiple orca populations becoming endangered. Orcas are especially threatened by food shortages, chemical pollution, and increasing noise in the ocean.
● Why is SeaWorld keeping orcas bad? Orcas are wild animals not meant for captivity. Not only that, but orcas are HUGE the amount of space and care they need to be healthy cannot be provided by a theme park. At least 46 orcas have died at SeaWorld already. Please do not support SeaWorld! These orcas are cramped, experiencing psychological damage, forced breeding, and other health issues. A big sign of this you can see with orcas is if there fin is floppy. This happens because the fin lacks support from swimming fast consistently because they cannot swim as they need to in captivity and also because they tend to get depressed. Technically this can happen in the wild, but it is extremely rare in comparison. If you see an orca with a floppy fin they are NOT healthy and are most likely captive.

I was called “creature” instead of like a person today (by a fellow therian so it wasn’t an insult lol) AND OMG THAT WAS THE MOST EUPHORIC THING EVER AHH
i love that every pokémon is someone’s favourite pokémon. it doesn’t matter how much you dislike a pokémon or how forgettable you you think a design is, out there is someone who thinks it’s their baby. my coworker who only discovered pokémon through pokémon go absolutely loves tangela and has a small army of fully powered up ones. at an expo once i saw a woman at a booth desperately trying to find an onix plushie because it was her daughter’s absolute favourite. i talked with someone recently who announced sudowoodo as their tippy top favourite. every single one is loved by someone and idk, i think that’s gotdang heartwarming
