For my abstract digital painting (the image on the right), I used the software program on my iPAD called Procreate! I was watching a scary movie the night before drawing this, so the dark and mystical vibes this abstract drawing may give off, may have stemmed from the influence of the scary horror movie I watched the night before. I used the cartooning brush set for Procreate by BeeJayDeL, which were great in generate the dark and thin sketchy looking lines. The lighter tones I used a more saturated form of the procreate brushes called the Bold Inker streamline which gave it a lighter, thicker, and creamy appearance, resembling that of a markers volumizing creaminess and volume, which I have applied in the center of my pieces. As for the background I decided to paint the background canvas black using a square black colored shape and selecting “arrange”-> “bring to back” in order to send the background black colored canvas to the back.
However the painting (left image) was much harder to achieve, as I used dark oil paints on a white canvas. I had some hard time playing around with the swatching process, as I spent loads of time (and I mean hours!) simply swatching colors to the consistency that I wanted to achieve. Therefore to achieve a dark brown color, I mixed our blue with some bits of yellow to form a dark green color and was adding bits of red paint into the mix until I achieved the tones of brown that I desired. Getting the right proportions was really tough, but I think I got close enough. Eventually, I painted all of the negative space of the background in black trying carefully not to go over the lines of the design of the center of my piece. Overall, the physical painting was much harder to accomplish compared to the digital painting, because with digital painting you can select from a color generator (color map) which specific colors and shades you desire, but with the physical painting, swatching takes a REALLY LONG TIME lol, u til you achieve the color and shade that you really want, since it takes time to figure out proportions. But at least, through this process, I really did end up valuing and appreciating the power of colors and their role in forming my abstract piece! This was a very fun project to work on!
