Herlock Sholmes, consulting detective.

Following his partner's hasty departure from Great Britain, Sholmes stagnated, leaning heavily on his landlady’s support. He buried himself in his work, relying on cases to facilitate social interaction, and yearned for connection despite rebuffing any attempts by outsiders to reach out to him. 

After a decade of depression, he discovered an assassination plot in which he believed Kazuma Asougi, an exchange student from Japan, was a potential victim. So, he maneuvered himself onto the same ship as the law student to keep a watchful eye. When he found Mr. Asougi knocked out and presumed dead, he played along. After all, one could not be assassinated if they were already deceased. 

Recognizing the obvious frame job, Sholmes ignored the fake evidence strewn about the cabin and invited the stowaway in the wardrobe to help him find the culprit of his friend's "murder". Shortly after convincing Mr. Asougi’s judicial assistant and the stowaway to go forth with the study tour, Sholmes requested the Japanese police inspector on board to take the incapacitated student back to Japan, insisting that there was a man, Yuujin Mikotoba, who would know what to do from there. 

It wasn't until he'd returned to 221B with his new companions in tow that he received a telegram that only solidified his distrust of police inspectors, now extending that distrust across borders. He was unable to hide his vexation, and so his new roommates interrogated him about the cause of his melancholy.

Eager to vent, Sholmes answered frankly: “I have just received word from Inspector Hosonaga that your friend has gone missing.”

“Missing?” Miss Susato gasped. 

“How can he be missing? How do you lose a body? It's not like he can get up and walk away!” Mr. Naruhodou perspired profusely at the thought.

Sholmes grinned toothily. “Ah, my dear fellow, you have deduced the very cause. That is precisely what happened.”

“What?!”

Design Details:

I headcanon Sholmes’ detective costume was designed and possibly even made by Iris in canon, so here, he instead retains his plainer brown suit from his pre-canon design with only a few added details like the deerstalker and leather garters. It was fun giving Sholmes a more weathered face with defined eye bags. His at-home wear is a velvet smoking jacket that he lounges around and smokes in. 

Many of the design changes are to his written character. Without the responsibility of parenthood, Sholmes has no catalyst to force him to stabilize himself. As such, his mood swings are much more extreme, with higher highs and lower lows. Without Iris to pick up the slack, household chores and meals are handled by his landlady, Mrs. Hudson.

He’s far more concise with his deductive process, skipping the course correction entirely and instead roping Ryuunosuke in by forcing him to fill in blanks mid-deduction. So, no accusing Ryuunosuke of murder. No off-the-wall accusations in general. Without his literary fame, no one has the patience to deal with his theatrics, so he's rather straightforward until he finds companions who humour him. A fortunate side effect of never becoming a parent is that he is not practiced at keeping up a lie, so he informs Ryuunosuke and Susato of Kazuma’s status early on. 

While he may have some cameos in Iris' "The Reaper of the Bailey", it is not enough to make him famous. As a result, Susato is not a diehard Sholmes fan but, funnily enough, a Reaper fan.

He will eventually become Gina’s mentor since he lacks the “Great Detective” reputation to force Gregson to take her on as an apprentice. He’s also much more critical of Gregson and the police in general, so he wouldn’t trust Gina in that man’s custody even if he could blackmail him into taking her in.

At a certain point, "the romance is rushed" is a dumbass criticism. Yeah, fucker. It's rushed. They're kids in school dating for the first time. You think they're gonna take it slow? You think they're going to put up boundaries "sorry I can't date you until two years have passed and even after that, we shall be courting, not dating, and then after ten years we'll maybe even be exclusive!" PEOPLE RUSH INTO ROMANCE. ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY HAVE NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE WITH ROMANCE BC THEY ARE KIDS.

the "___ is a misogynist?" meme is only fun so long as you either see it with characters you don't care about or characters you agree with being chosen... I saw it with Jotaro Kujo, and I was like ughhhh because Jotaro doesn't scream at women and call them bitches because he's gay; he is a misogynistic 17-year-old boy who is bi at best.

I said fuck it and started planning to have Ryuunosuke and Susato meet earlier in Iris van Zieks.

An aspect of the IvZ AU is that the two are even closer than in canon. They're really going through it, living with a maladjusted detective with no quirky ten-year-old to lighten the mood. Plus, without the secrecy surrounding Iris' parentage, Yuujin never forces his daughter's return to Japan, so they spend much more time together.

One way they bond more is over their interest in a certain series... The Reaper of the Bailey. Because of the Reaper myth, Iris' mysteries take a more supernatural-horror angle, so they are on Ryuunosuke's radar when he's looking for stuff to spook himself. While not a superfan like Susato, Ryuunosuke has enjoyed the few Reaper stories he's read... mostly the scary bits. Susato is invested in the tragic, tormented figure of the Reaper and is rooting for him to dispel the lies that tarnish his family name! While Ryuunosuke is hoping for a big, frightening confrontation with the ghost of the previous Lord van Zieks.

So, with that in mind, maybe they meet earlier in a library? Or wherever you pick up Randst magazine? Susato is thrilled to meet another person who's read the Reaper stories, even if Ryuunosuke is a dirty casual who only ever reads what he can get his hands on without seeking the rest of the series out. She lends him some of her collection.

Ryuunosuke still gets smuggled by Kazuma because I need Kazuma to die, rip. Susato is very cross with Ryuunosuke upon finding out that he went out of his way to smuggle himself on board when he could have just bought himself a ticket and travelled legally. She doesn't question Ryuunosuke's innocence because she knows him (I'd already decided on this since Sholmes cuts to the chase without accusing Ryuunosuke of murder in this).

Both are warily excited when they become official additions to the narrative. Iris simply couldn't resist making them mainstays when she read "quintessential look of a sacrificial lamb" in the transcript of McGilded's trial.

Very much into a scenario where Ryuu and Susato meet at the university and become friends before Ryuu and Kazuma do. The three of them somehow never end up in the same room together because of their differing schedules. Kazuma teases both Ryuu and Susato for having a secret little friend and laughs when they both insist that it isn't like that because it really really isn't. Susato watched both of them write their speeches for the competition and when Ryuu asked if his was too simple Susato was like no don't worry, you're good, because she knew that Kazuma was never going to get through his entire thing. She was completely right. Susato is running to get the evidence to Ryuu's trial on the double because there's no way he did it and if she will be able to do one thing in a courtroom, it is proving that. Ryuu has figured out at the trial that oh, Susato is Kazuma's assistant, so if Kazuma represent him and loses, neither Kazuma nor Susato will be able to go. He does not hesitate, even though he is terrified. Thankfully he has been listening to Susato talk about court proceedings so he isn't nearly as lost as he could've been.

Kazuma somehow feels both happy and incredibly betrayed once he finds out that they already know each other. What do you mean we could've all been hanging out together this whole time? And then once they do he quickly finds out that all Ryuu and Susato do is bully him. He feels even more betrayed.

Susato knows from the very start Ryuu was also on the ship because she was just going to smuggle him with her and Ryuu had to turn her down because Kazuma was already doing it. She brings him snacks and scolds Kazuma for making Ryuu sleep in the closet. The door locks, Kazuma-san.

Gonna be honest, I think Susato would just buy Ryuu a ticket. She'd find out about Kazuma's smuggling scheme and just be like "oh no... my brother is... stupid? my brother has... no sense?"

And her concern deepens as she asks Ryuu why he was about to go along with being human luggage when they have a whole month to figure out the ticket situation, and he replies, "I hadn't thought about that..."

Technically, if you look at the animation, Barok's left hand (the one not holding the chalice) swings around with him, and so, I could have that be Rococo reaching and pulling her skirts out of the way as she kicks her leg up-- I can't animate.

My swap-ish au abt TGAA I've talked about in this post cuz why not.

I've just thought of some more interesting parts of this au that would make it more cohesive.

basically it's a "what if genshin dies instead of klint in the duel?" Au. Everything else pre duel stays the same.

But in the duel Klint comes on top. He is fully ready to take the blame for genshin's murder, but When Stronghart arrives at Van Zieks residence he is forced to destroy all the evidence of his fault. The next day the body is discovered. Lady Baskerville soon leaves the residence supposedly to visit her family. Barok is traumatized by the death if his friend and Gregson is appointed for the case. Ofc ppl are suspecting Klint and Gregson does too,tho very unwillingly. It's more like an unwanted thought. However he can't find any proofs. Unbeknownst to him, Stronghart requests Wilson to falsify the result of the autopsy. The falsified autopsy says that genshin was stabbed by something more similar to a kitchen knife or a dagger, instead of a full on sword. Gregson and Barok try their darnest to find the culprit, but Klint thwarts their every attempt. Barok is now even less suspicious of Klint's involvement, bc he wouldn't kill his friend, right?

The case goes cold and everyone is miserable.

Yujin and Seishiro get sent back for their critics of the system, but not before Mikotoba receives a strange letter where he is begged to come to a certain place and help a lady. And not to tell anyone. The letter doesn't have any names and addresses. Yujin complies, finds LB and everything goes similar to the canon, but she survies and lets him name the baby as a sign of gratitude. They part ways. Sholmes and Mikotoba have to say goodbye again. However before leaving for Japan, Seishiro meets up with Stronghart. Jigoku destroyed the stand and is on thin ice with the law, but Stronghart asked for his assistance to search for the papers on the corpse. However Klint's will has made it into Karuma already, so they find nothing.

everything in Japan goes similar to the canon. However in England things are a bit different. Balmung left with Lady Baskerville so there's no way professor could exist anymore in his purest form. Tho Stronghart still threatens to tell Barok about Klint's actions and so the Reaper is born. Klint work on very difficult cases about aristocrats that use their position to escape justice. However every person that gets away is killed in mysterious ways. Van Zieks always have an air tight alibis so the reaper becomes another legend. Barok, still clearly affected by Genshin's death, tries to investigate what's happening but to no end.

After five years of this Klint can't take it anymore. He falls terribly ill (partially brought down by the guilt for his actions, but also kinda faking it). He is advised to leave London for a medical retreat and leave courtroom to reduce stress. He decided to leave for Germany or Netherlands Klint terribly wants to leave Barok in Gregson's care, little darling is his protège after all, but it's too risky to leave him in London with Stronghart around. He wants to alienate Barok so that he wouldn't be brought down with him if the truth would come out. Sadly he loves his bro too much and can't just abandon him. So Van Zieks leave the country. They say their goodbyes to Gregson and promise to always stay in touch.

While they're gone, Gregson continues to work in Scotland yard and gets terrorized by Sholmes. However in the meantime he tries to investigate three cases: the death of asogi, professor case and the disappearance of Lady Baskerville. Sholmes has this cases in mind, but his perspective is more unbiased. He isn't as blinded by the devotion to Klint and sees a lot of suspicious things clearer. However he lacks any real evidence.

While Van Zieks aren't in the country, their family home gets broken into and Balmung's collar is stolen (like in canon)

Gregson writes about it to the boys and while Barok is kinda pissed, Klint is scared shitless.

Now let's finally get to the games events.

Wilson is still killed by Brett, cuz he knows too much. The case goes the same. The assasin exchange is still present, Stronghart wants Wilson and Gregson gone. Wilson for obvious reasons and Gregson for getting too close to the truth. What I mean is, Gregson starts picking up on the falsified autopsy report and has some suspicions about why Professor disappeared. And him and Sholmes are trying to locate the stolen treasure. Stronghart thinks that no one will listen to Sholmes since he isn't as popular here as he is in canon, cuz no Iris.

Kazuma agrees to it, cause he believes Gregson has something to do with it (he's kinda manipulated by Jigoku and Stronghart)

The second case also goes the same, however in a cutscene in the end we see that two rooms in the first class part of the ship are now occupied.

When we get to Britain, Susato and Ryunosuke see these mysterious passengers. And they are being greeted by a guy in a green coat. Your friendly detective recognizes him and tries to make a small talk, but Gregson doesn't have any of this. The Van Zieks and Gregson reunion goes well, but Barok catches the glance of Ryu and Susato and gets a sparkle in his eye.

Yes, the biggest change of this AU, BAROK ISN'T RACIST!! HE COMES BACK TO COURT BECAUSE HE SEES HIS DEAD FRIEND IN THEM AND WANTS TO SEE IF THEY'RE AS HONORABLE AS HE WAS. AND AFTER HE LEARNS ABOUT WHY THEY'RE HERE HE'S HEARTBROKEN AND WANTS TO FIND GENSHIN'S KILLER EVEN MORE!!

The last few cases of one don't change much, cuz I didn't think of a clever subversion.

Everything goes similar to the canon, but Gregson isn't a dick, cuz he isn't corrupted yet. Him and Barok are still pretty idealistic and want to see the truth come to light. They idealize Klint very much, they see him as an étalon of their ideology. If only they knew.....

In the big '26, people will retroactively tell you that Hamilton was a bad musical, and that it was never good, and you should feel ashamed to have ever enjoyed listening to/watching it. And you'll be curious why they would say that because you were there, and you remember most of the controversy surrounding Hamilton boiling down to certain people believing nonwhite people have no place in musical theatre. So you ask: "what's up?" And their answer will just be a "woke" way of saying they don't believe nonwhite people should have a place in musical theatre.

To me, genderbending a character is more than just feminizing or masculinizing the canon design. It also includes asking what choices the original designer might have felt empowered to make if the character were conceptualized as the opposite gender.
