YaoiCon 2017 Local Area Guide
With one whole month to go, it's time for one of everyone's favorite things – the Local Area Guide!
Before we get to the fun stuff, let's make sure that we've got basics down:
Are you 18 years of age or older by the time the con rolls around?
Have you pre-registered for the convention? If not, it’ll be $65 at the door for the full weekend pass.
Have you made reservations at the Hyatt Regency Santa Clara or at one of the nearby hotels? And if you’re doing the roommate thing, have you cemented agreements with everyone involved so that they all know how much they owe per night? If you’re one of the roommates, make sure you set aside whatever amount so that there aren’t any unpleasant surprises when it comes time to check out.
If you’re not from the Bay Area, have you made travel arrangements? Whether it’s leaving on a jet plane, taking the train, or road-tripping with your fellow attendees, time is running out to get the best prices on tickets. Not saying you can’t wait until the last minute, but it is a bit easier to get things in order if you give yourself some breathing room.
The closest airport to the Hyatt Regency Santa Clara is the Norman J. Mineta San Jose International Airport. Unfortunately, the hotel doesn't provide a shuttle this time around, so we will all have to find some means of transportation. You can take a taxi (approximately $29 or so according to taxifarefinder.com), use Uber (which can vary, but the estimate says about $14 and up) or Lyft (again, varies, but the estimate says $11 and up), or you can take the light rail/bus combo (10 Metro Light Rail to the 1st & Metro Light Rail Station then take the 902 Mountain View bus to the Great America station, $2 each segment, $4 total). You also have the option of taking a shuttle service which start at about $30 themselves.
That being said, let's get to the fun stuff!
Within the hotel itself, we have some lovely surprises in store.
Compared to its sister property in Burlingame, the Hyatt Regency Santa Clara also has a market, appropriately called @ The Market, which will have your grab-n-go food options like pastries and sandwiches. The Evolution Cafe and Bar is slightly pricier, but they have delicious food and cocktails and wine to go with them. The TusCA Restaurant has breakfast, lunch, dinner, and, most importantly, dessert menus with locally sourced dishes with options for our vegan and gluten-free friends.
What our previous hotel didn't have that the Hyatt Regency Santa Clara does is Truya Sushi! While they have limited hours in comparison to the other food options inside the hotel, we like the fact that we don't have to go far in order to enjoy a little sashimi.
Room service is room service, yes, but the Hyatt Regency allows you to order from afar at http://santaclara.hyattdine.com. If you use the web check-in feature, you can order food to arrive just after you do!
More info is available at https://santaclara.regency.hyatt.com/en/hotel/dining.html including menus!
Heading north on Great American Parkway, seven minutes on foot according to the all-powerful Google Maps, there's Joe Chinese (10am-8pm, closed Saturday and Sunday), Bawarchi Indian Cuisine (11:15am-2:30pm, 5-10pm on weekdays, 12pm-3pm, 5pm-10:30pm on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday), TOGO's Sandwiches (8am-7pm on weekdays, 10am-3pm on weekends), and of course, Taco Bell (7am-10pm every day except Sunday (9pm)). There's a Shell Station just a little bit beyond that, so if you need to fill up and get some snacks, that's one option for you. For these businesses, you'll want to cross at Bunker Hill Lane before going much further on the main road. It'll be easier.
On the east side of Great America Parkway (no crossing the street here), about two or three minutes past the other businesses is Erik's Delicafe (7am-5pm Monday through Thursday, 7am-4pm on Friday, closed on weekends). Now this one comes recommended from my wife, who put in time, I mean, worked at Great America briefly Back in The Day, and she'd head there for lunch instead of the employee dining area. They have sandwiches, coffee, tea, and pastries. Bonus: they deliver too!
Heading east on Tasman Road, you'll find David's Restaurant (7:30am-9pm everyday) after turning left on Centennial Boulevard. They have banquet/buffet style options with plenty of variety.
Old Ironsides Cafe is 0.7 miles away or about 14 minutes heading south on Great America Parkway. They have nice, basic Mediterranean fare in a simple setting with outdoor seating.
Almost a mile south on Great America Parkway is Bubble Bay Tea (11am-11pm daily) for all your boba tea and waffle needs. Cafe Falafel (11am-9pm Monday through Saturday, 11am-7:30pm Sunday) has more Mediterranean food with an emphasis on wraps, kebabs, and gyros (they also deliver!). Next to them is Amakai Japanese Cuisine (11am-3pm, 5pm-9pm Monday through Saturday, closed on Sunday) which has reasonably priced sushi. Pizza My Heart is next (11am-10pm daily), and they still have some of the best pizza in the Bay Area.
Iguanas Burritozilla (11am-10pm Monday through Saturday, 11am-9pm on Sunday) might have burritos. Maybe. But you'd better bring friends if you want to take a shot at the Burritozilla, an 18 inch, 5lb super burrito. We’ve also been told that the food is not very spicy, so take that into consideration when building your burrito. They also deliver.
House of Bagels (5am-4pm Monday through Friday, 6am-2pm on Saturday and Sunday) is a nice mom and pop bagel place. While they have limited hours, they have a menu chock full of bagels and bagel sandwich variations.
Next to them is ...another Togo's. Just in case you need another branch of the same chain.
Just across Mission College Boulevard from the above shops is the International House of Pancakes (24 hours!). It's located inside the Avatar Hotel (which has a really cute toy robot collection).
A short walk away from the IHOP is Bennigan's (11am-11pm Monday through Friday, 11am-12am Saturday and Sunday) which has Americanized Irish pub fare. The Guinness Glazed Bacon Burger comes highly recommended.
More than a mile from the Hyatt Regency Santa Clara (i.e. having a car or access to one is helpful):
If you go south on Great America Parkway and take a right on Mission College Boulevard then a left ...also on Mission College Boulevard and follow it past the McAfee corporate campus, you'll hit the Mercado shopping center.
The most important resident of this shopping center is the In-N-Out (10:30am-1am Sunday through Thursday, 10:30am-1:30am on Fridays and Saturdays), obviously, but there's also a Tomatina (11am-10pm Sunday through Thursday, 11am-11pm Friday and Saturday), a casual Italian cafe with seasonal and daily specials. Right next door is a Krispy Kreme Doughnuts (6am-11pm Sunday through Thursday, 6am-12am Friday and Saturday) and a Panda Express (10am-10pm Sunday through Thursday, 10am-10:30pm Friday and Saturday).
In the same shopping center is Smoke Eaters (11am-12am Sunday through Thursday, 11am-1am Friday and Saturday), a sports bar with buffalo wings of varying degrees of hotness. Next to that is a FedEx (7am-10pm Monday through Friday, 8am-8pm Saturday, and 10am-8pm Sunday) for more shipping needs outside of anime.
For the larger stores in the Mercado shopping center, we have the Walmart Neighborhood Market (6am-11pm everyday) for your regular grocery needs. There's a TJ Maxx Home Goods (9:30am-9:30pm, Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday, 9:30am-6pm Wednesday and Thursday, and 11am-8pm Sunday) next to it if you need clothing (or feel a sudden urge to redecorate your home).
Next to that, in the northeast part of the shopping center, is a Subway (8am-10pm Monday through Thursday, 8am-11pm Friday and Saturday, and 9am-10pm Sunday) for more sandwich needs. Mexicali Grill (11am-10pm Sunday through Thursday, 11am-11pm Friday and Saturday) is next with somewhat pricier Mexican fare in a restaurant setting.
You can get more delicious fruit and milk teas at Jazen Tea which is inside of Pho Hoa Noodle Shop (10am-11pm Sunday through Thursday, 10am-12am Thursday through Saturday), where you can get more delicious Vietnamese food to go with it.
Jamba Juice (7am-8pm Monday through Thursday, 7am-9pm Friday, 8am-9pm Saturday, and 8am-8pm Sunday) for your smoothie needs and Starbucks (5am-11pm Monday through Thursday, 5am-12am Friday, 5:30am-12am Saturday, and 6:30am-11pm Sunday) for your caffeine-related needs are next to them.
For our cosplayer friends, the nearest Jo-Ann Fabric and Crafts (9am-9pm Monday through Saturday, 10am-6pm Sunday) is 8 miles away going west on Tasman Dr and south on the Lawrence Expressway, getting off on Stevens Creek Blvd where the store will be on the right after about two and a half blocks.
Michaels (9am-9pm Monday through Saturday, 10am-7pm Sunday) is about four-ish miles away if you head north on Great America Parkway, get on CA-237 eastbound until you get off at exit 9A, turning left on N McCarthy Blvd, then right on Ranch Dr. You can always hit the In-N-Out on your way back to get fuel to work on your costume until the very last minute.
Fabrics R Us (9am-7pm everyday) on Berryessa Rd deserves an honorable mention just for the sheer selection of fabrics. Take Great American Parkway south to the 101, take the 101 South to the Oakland Rd exit then turn left after taking the exit, then right on Mabury Rd, then left on Berryessa Rd. The store will be on the left after the intersection with Lundy Ave.
