“Omg, stop, you’re literally acting like such a yucky boy right now!” Kayla groaned, tossing a throw pillow at Carey.
“Told you we shouldn’t have invited him,” sneered Liz, her feelings obvious.
Steph cast a wary expression Carey’s way. “He’s probably perving on us right now.”
Kayla demurred, easing off, although a bit reluctantly. “No, no, he’s not like that, not really.”
“Then what the fuck does he mean ‘I don’t know,’ Kayla?”
Carey’s fight or flight instincts were screaming. “It’s fine, Kayla, maybe I should leave…” It had all been going pretty well, everyone had been having fun, until they started talking about their crushes. Kayla, Carey’s best friend, had asked him knowingly about his crush, after each of the girls had talked about their boyfriend or some guy they’d been interested in lately. Carey had bashfully tried to avoid the question, and just like that, record scratch, the fun was over.
Liz and Steph had been very skeptical about Carey being invited to their semi-regular girls’ night, to put it lightly.
Kayla put down her glass of Sauvignon Blanc, casting a look at Carey.
“You’re not going anywhere, bestie. Just tell them. It’s fine.”
“No, there’s really nothing…”
Kayla cut him off abruptly. “Are you tucked right now?”
Carey looked at her like he’d been struck with a lightning bolt. “Kayla!” He seemed on the verge of tears.
Liz tentatively repeated a key, but unfamiliar word. “Tucked?”
Kayla widened her eyes in Carey’s direction. “Show them. He’s safe,” she added, glancing back to Liz and Steph. “Show them.”
“Show them? I’m leaving, this is crazy.” Carey got up.
“Sweetie, these are my friends. Do you trust me? Then show them. They’ll see that you belong.”
“Yeah, show us, it’s fine,” Steph added, not knowing what tucked meant but picking up on the vibe.
Tears glistening in his eyes, Carey stood there for several tense seconds. “You better promise they’re not gonna laugh at me, Kayla,” he said, voice quivering.
“It’s fine. They need to know I didn’t invite you here by accident.”
Carey took a deep breath, exhausted and full of resignation. He slowly lowered his jeans to reveal baby smooth legs… and a tasteful pair of pale baby pink panties with demure lacy detailing around the legs. There was no sign of a penis.
“What… where… ?” Liz started, but Kayla cut her off immediately.
“He tucks it away every day. Always wears panties. He hates having it. He’s not a boy, not really. He’s one of us.”
Tears started flowing down Carey’s face. He pulled up his pants and turned to leave again.
“It’s okay, honey, no one’s laughing,” Kayla said with a genuine sisterly kindness that didn’t ring false to anyone in the room.
“So you’re… does he, like…” Steph tripped over her words. “You’re not into girls… are you?”
Kayla got up, made her way to Carey, who was still facing away from the group, towards the door, put her arms around his shoulders and physically turned him back towards the couch. She topped off his wine glass and returned to her own seat.
“Carey’s crush is Logan,” she said in a low but excited tone.
Liz nearly jumped up in her seat. “Oh. My. God! From accounting?!”
Steph’s jaw was on the floor. “He’s so quiet, but gorgeous! You’ve got some good taste, Carey! Have you talked to him?”
Carey nervously sat down. “Um, well… so, he was like, waiting at the elevator the other day and he told me he liked my shoes…”
Steph almost cut him off, she was so excited. “I can’t believe how cute this is!” she practically squealed.
Carey grinned, almost involuntarily.
Kayla mirrored his expression. “But I keep telling Carey, he might not know you’re gay, so we’ve got to femme you up a little.”
“Manicure!” Steph shouted.
“Oooh, Carey, you’d look so cute with this subtle coral I have, let me go get it…”
“And have you tried a little bit of super light foundation? Just a little, I promise!”
