I just got out of an advanced screening of #HouseoftheDragon! Before I give my impression, I have to flex my nerd-cred a bit. Some of you may know that I have been a “Song of Ice and Fire” reader for over 20 years. It was my favorite book series for a long time and I used to re-read the first 3 books every year. I cosplayed Daenerys in 2011, the year the Game of Thrones show came out, met George at SDCC, who brought me backstage to meet the cast of the show while in costume(full story in my book). I watched the show religiously, all 8 seasons, for almost a decade, and… well, the last season hurt me bad. Those who know know 🙄… Naturally, this means I have been on the fence about House of the Dragon. The lore surrounding the Targaryens stayed with me the most from the books, so I was really intrigued by the idea of the prequel covering some of the events only mentioned in passing in the books. But also, ya girl has trust issues now LOL! So tonight was a great opportunity to watch the 1st episode without any outside influence and form my own opinion! And I must say… I’m into it! I will keep watching! And I won’t say anything beyond - it’s freaking good to be back in Westeros. Thanks so much @hbo and @hbomax for the screening invite. 🌙Yuheng of the Night Sky✨ - Makeup test for Chu Wanning to soothe my insecurities! Every cosplayer knows this feeling. Sometimes you just gonna pin on the unfinished costume and take some pics in front of your closet to visualize yourself as the character! I had looked at Wanning’s costume on my dress form for so long and got all weird about whether I could pull off his haughty untouchable Yuheng Elder look. This man is described with “phoenix eyes” and “sword-like eyebrows” and I needed to see if I could do that lol. So I did a test makeup with a half-styled wig (still need to cut & fluff the bangs) and the unfinished costume just pinned on…. and now I feel so much better about everything, phew! Cameo by the $20 husky plushie I found at IKEA of all places! Until I meet a Mo Ran cosplayer, I guess I will just carry the plushie around at cons looool! 🎋A Shizun in the making! 🪷 I’m thrilled to share my current costume progress of Chu Wanning from the danmei novel “ErHa” or “Dumb Husky And His White Cat Shizun” in honor of his birthday!! Yes it is August 9th in China already! I have been planning and collecting materials for months but started sewing just in the last couple of weeks. The lil video shows the various layers coming together, the belt is a stand-in from my Lan Wangji costume, and there is still A LOT left to do. Yes it is ANOTHER all white hanfu 😆 but the overall look will be much more regal and formal than my last one. For Chu Wanning, I’m taking inspiration from the elusive mobile game designs and various official illustrations of the character but then throwing in my own design aesthetics as well. The ErHa novel is not as well/known as the MTXT works (or is it for the faint of heart) but it is the one that has left the deepest impression on me and I knew fairly early on that a Shizun cosplay would be inevitable. The novel had been licensed in English and the first volume will come out later this year so I hope more readers will get to experience the brilliance and core-cutting angst of ErHa. I think only Berserk has ever come close to this pain level for me lol Anyway - Happy Birthday, YuHeng Elder! 🌹Thorn Princess🩸in the making! I’ve wanted to cosplay Yor Forger from Spy x Family ever since I read the manga in April! But having been on the road for 3 months, I only found time to start her this past weekend. After weeks of collecting materials, envisioning, planning and sketching, Yor is coming together fast! An evening of mock-up/pattern making and one full day of sewing later, I have enough to do a fit test! I’m leaning heavily into the “Thorn Princess” vibe and giving this costume more shape and fancy textures because Yor says this is the “nicest outfit” she owns! I have some extra fun details planned…. The inside fabric of the dress and the black faux leather trim are from my @cosplayfabrics line, both currently available in @joann_stores! Notes on fabrics because I’m a nerd: ▪️I had bought a different rose fabric but when I was looking through the yardage samples of the Fall 2022 collection, the Flower Brocade Velvet really jumped out at me. On a whim, I tried it and I love how extravagant it looks lol! ▪️The main black fabric is a heavier knit with an embossed velvet pattern that I haggled in the LA fabric district. It has a slight stretch and does NOT wrinkle 👍 ▪️By far, the most time-saving material is the faux leather trim and I thank the cosplay gods Joann keeps restocking it! ▪️I also found a vintage bodysuit in London with a rose motive and I wanna play around with it for fancy sleeves and such 🤔 ▪️The dress has a mini skirt built in, which is how I interpreted Yor’s design. We wrapped up @animeexpo with our most burning fandom - MoDaoZuShi! With only little time before I had to run for the airport, @malinda_chan, @freamai, @mmmmmiya and I checked out the cosplay sets in the Entertainment Hall, which are truly next level! We also ran into a huge group of MXTX cosplayers and had a chaotic couple of minutes on the class room set! Kabedons ensued 👀 I can’t believe AX is over already! It was like running a marathon on a time-warp, never enough time to talk to everyone and see everything. I’m a seasoned con goer and used to how fast paced big weekends like this are, but this AX really gave me hardcore FOMO moments lol! There is just so much to do that you can’t possibly do it all! I’m so sad @fantasybaselofficial is over! My first European con since 2019! I knew it would be emotional with reuniting with friends but I was truly a bit overwhelmed. This is my fourth @fantasybaselofficial and I got to be a part of the very first one 7 years ago. To see the convention and especially the cosplay village grow so much has been truly wonderful! Spending time with friends and re-meeting cosplayers I haven’t seen in years was so special, and the same with getting to know new talents and see their work up close! Today was about 10 degrees (f) colder and MAX WINDY 🌬 which made climbing a mountain and hiking to a (different) fortress a precarious but not sweaty activity. (Thank gawd for my @sleepi.shop jacket!) We were awarded with INCREDIBLE views of the caldera, a hidden gem church on a seemingly abandoned peninsula, and a glorious sunset! Santorini remains one of the most unique places I’ve ever traveled to, and today I finally felt that isekai magic from 25 years ago again. Sadly, the island is overrun with tourists now (hi, we’re some of them) so many sights are simply not as spectacular as they were a couple of decades ago. BUT today we explored off the beaten path away from the top attractions and it was SO peaceful and tranquil! Absolutely reminds you of why Santorini is considered by some scholars as the inspiration for Atlantis. Tomorrow we go back to Germany for a few more days before we head to Basel, Switzerland for the kick-off of my 2022 summer con tour! I always think of lotus ponds when I think of summer… maybe I’ll get a chance to take historical hanfu photos at an actual pond in the future instead of using a backdrop haha I also would like to design and make a Chinese fantasy hanfu some time! This one looks quite nice for bought and altered (bodice addition etc) but I really want to create a super elaborate embroidered crazy detailed fairy costume in the Xianxia genre. 👹 DAKI MAKEUP TEST 👹 I got inspired after the livestream last night and took these photos at 1am in front of my closet, lol! It was so much fun putting all the Daki elements together and I’m now more excited for the full cosplay photoshoot than ever!!! A huge thank you to @sayakatcosplay and @plexicosplay for letting me use this gorgeous wig and hair accessories that they created for their tutorial videos!! Yes, you can watch exactly how @sayakatcosplay ventilated, dyed and styled this wig! And how @plexicosplay 3-D modeled and printed Daki’s 11 hair accessories! 📹Video l!nks !n my b!o!! 📹 I also want to shout-out @kinpatsucosplay for designing the face tattoos! They are available as a digital download on her website! I used tattoo paper to print them out and they look so nice! My demonic contact lenses are from @uniqso! I replaced most of my cosplay lens collection with #uniqso lenses and couldn’t be happier! Since this was a makeup test, I didn’t draw the demon veins and mostly focused on the eye and lip makeup. Main take away: Much angrier eyebrows next time lol! I have also decided that I won’t do undead body paint for Daki because it would require so much coverage/time and the process would dampen the fun aspect of this cosplay for me. Now I will push to finish the costume in the next week and do a photoshoot this month! If Raiden Shogun wielded a steel katana, this would be it! I recently got a custom made katana from swordsofnorthshire.com and it was so cool to be able to choose every material and component! Of course it has purple bindings and even my name is engraved on the blade! I have always wanted to own a real katana and to be able to custom design one after my personal aesthetic is really special. I couldn’t wait to get photos with my katana so I stuck a few in while cosplaying Ei. I think this sword suits her very well, too! Progress report! My current cosplay project is Daki from Demon Slayer! As an Upper Moon demon disguised as an Oiran in the Entertainment District, her outfit would have been made with opulent high quality fabrics. Thankfully, my fabric line is coming out with a gorgeous pink and yellow brocade which are perfect for this costume! I created the design on her obi and sashes using the fabric on fabric appliqué method and Heat-N-Bond. In fact, all the fabrics used in this costume except for the lace overlay are part of my @cosplayfabrics collection which is available in @joann_stores! For personal comfort, I’m making this costume a tad more modest which mostly consists of the panty not being so low-slung on the hips, the top having a bit more coverage and the obi being more structured like a garment. I had the foresight to order a pair of Oiran geta shoes months ago and they are hella cool but absolutely terrifying to walk in. Oirans always have attendants to lean on during parades so I will only use these shoes for a studio photoshoot. Don’t want to break an ankle or anything 😅 Most of the costume is finished as of now, but I have to begin the arduous task of making a wire frame and back harness for the sashes so they can suspend around me. If all goes well, I can do a photoshoot as Daki in the next couple of weeks!
