Can you imagine? Being a young soldier boy losing hope during and endless war and then, one night, in the middle of nowhere, a cute guy appears half naked in your tent, bullets rain all over the place and you barely make it out alive, so the next morning, while you're being relocated, your one and only thought is "Damn, I gotta know his name, we could be dead by noon, so, why not?".

And, luckily, he shows you that warm smile right away and you know how special this person is, how important he'll be for the rest of your days.

To this day I still don’t understand why they made a point of having Dave enlist 3 days early if they weren’t gonna explore the repercussions of Klaus’ actions of Dave’s storyline in season 3. If the point was that Klaus couldn’t affect Dave’s future at all, and looking back I think that’s what they were going for, then why not just say he enlisted the same day he did in the original timeline? Or why even mention the day at all, why not just say he enlisted and leave it at that?

UNDER THE BANNER OF HEAVEN (2022)

y'know in one of your snippets when klaus said "you could probably just grab me and put me on your dick"......... please may you elaborate on this idea <3

“If you stop,” Klaus says, “I’m gonna kill you.”

Which is all well and good, but Dave might not have a choice for much longer. He wasn’t exactly well-rested when they got here, and that was before he started putting in work - a stiff breeze would knock his legs out from under him right now, if they had their window open. Which is what he deserves for trying to show off during the first round, and again during the second, but it was worth it to him, at the time.

It was worth it to Klaus, too, judging by the state of him. He’s limp on his back in the middle of their motel bed, heels hooked around Dave’s calves, making soft formless little noises like Dave’s hips are knocking them out of him before they’re ready. He’s so sweet, blissed out, the way Dave likes to get him whenever they can scrape together the time for it. All the frantic energy fucked out of him until he finally just lies still and lets himself be taken care of. He’ll let Dave take care of him until he can’t move, can’t even speak.

Dave also has to be able to walk tomorrow, is the thing.

“We gotta switch, sweetheart,” Dave says into Klaus’s neck.

Klaus groans, drags his nails up Dave’s back, says, “Like this, baby, please, s’perfect.”

And Dave tries, he genuinely does. It’s not like there’s nothing in it for him. They’ve been together all night, and Klaus lets Dave in so easily like this, pleasure and gravity turning him pliant in Dave’s arms. Klaus’s whole body under his, all his warm skin. The way it feels to cover him, like this is all Dave has to do to keep him safe.

Dave’s knees give up the ghost, and he takes as much of his weight as he can on his elbows, but Klaus still says, “Oof.”

“Klaus,” Dave says, “c’mon.”

Klaus makes the most pitiful sound Dave’s ever heard come out of him. He rolls his hips up into Dave’s belly, kisses Dave’s shoulder, tries to drag him back in with his ankles linked behind his thighs, but it’s not happening.

“It’s not happening,” Dave tells him.

Klaus grabs Dave’s ass in both hands and pushes up into his abs again.

“Okay,” Dave says, “if you got the energy for that, you got the energy to ride me.”

“You are so mean,” Klaus says. “You’re not even mean in the fun way.”

Dave uses the last remaining strength in his lower body to push himself up and sit back against the headboard. Klaus tries to grab his arm, but he’s even floppier than normal, and he ends up dropping his hand on Dave’s leg and leaving it there.

“C’mere,” Dave says, and he tugs at Klaus’s elbow.

Klaus lifts one foot off the mattress and drops it back down.

“You are ridiculous,” Dave says, and he reaches over until he can wrap his arms around Klaus’s ribs and sort of - haul him up, partway, until his shoulders are off the pillow.

“Oh,” Klaus says, “my god.”

That’s usually a good sign, but Dave checks Klaus's face, anyway. His mouth is open, lips red from kisses, a flush high on his cheeks. He stares back at Dave, his eyes huge, pupils blown.

“You gonna cooperate?” Dave asks him.

Klaus swallows, and manages to go even more deadweight in Dave’s arms.

So Dave gets a better hold on his waist and drags him up into his lap. It takes core strength that Dave barely has at the moment, but Klaus moans like Dave just did everything he likes to him at once, and it’s worth it, it always ends up being worth it.

“Impossible,” Dave says into Klaus’s neck. He gets Klaus’s back to his chest, lifts his hips off his lap enough to get the angle right, and when Klaus sinks down, he takes Dave in the same motion.

“Fuck,” Klaus says, “fuck, fuck, oh my god-“

And hell, Dave’s arms are going to end up sore tomorrow, one way or another. He’s always sore, they both are. At least this way he’ll be sore on purpose. He can catch Klaus’s eye and grin every time he has to lift something heavier than a canteen.

Dave braces his hands in Klaus’s armpits, which would probably look ridiculous if someone saw them. But the door is locked, the curtains are drawn, and the hold lets Dave lift Klaus up and lower him down, slow and measured, until Klaus’s legs are shaking on either side of Dave’s thighs. Klaus is tall, but he’s light, even with some muscle on him, and Dave builds him up to a pace that’ll get him off, if he’s close.

He definitely seems close.

“Baby,” he gets out, and Dave lets him drop a little quicker, and he reaches up and grabs Dave’s forearms to brace himself the next time, and the next. He tips his head back, but he keeps his body weight balanced between Dave’s hands. He’ll go wherever Dave takes him. “Baby, I’m-“

Klaus doesn’t finish his sentence, but it’s pretty clear where he was heading with it. Dave digs his heels in, snaps his hips up to meet Klaus on every drop, and Klaus sobs through it with his nails in Dave’s wrists until he sags back against Dave’s chest, his hips still rocking even as the rest of him melts in Dave’s arms.

Dave tucks his nose in behind Klaus’s ear and kisses the bolt of Klaus’s jaw. And Klaus is probably as sore as Dave at the moment, if not more, but he bears down for Dave anyway, moans at the little afterburst of pleasure that Dave can feel him feeling. Dave runs his hands over Klaus’s pecs, his waist, his unsteady legs. Holds him, handles him, moves him around just because he can.

He keeps holding Klaus, after, even when they lie back down. Diagonal across the bed, their feet next to the pillows, one of Dave’s arms around Klaus’s chest, the other around his waist. Klaus shifts, just enough to feel the resistance, and hums. Settles as much as he ever does.

They lie like that together, and then Klaus says, “I’m six fucking feet tall.”

“I know,” Dave says.

“I’m six feet tall.”

“You mentioned.”

“You are - holy shit,” Klaus says. “I’m obsessed with you.”

“I can’t do that every night,” Dave says. “I’ll pull something.”

“If you could do that every night, we’d never do anything else.”

Dave laughs into the nape of Klaus’s neck. Kisses him there, licks the sweat that he somehow worked up while doing basically nothing. Klaus rolls over until they’re nose to nose, so Dave kisses his lips, too.

“I don’t think I can return the favor, unfortunately,” Klaus says. “Not exactly. But, okay, there was this club I used to go to, and they had, like, a pulley system set up in some of the rooms?”

“A pulley system.”

“And I think if we found a bed with the right kind of headboard, we could probably-“

Dave kisses Klaus again, slides a hand down to grab his thigh. There’s no way he’s moving from this spot for at least the next hour, his entire body would revolt if he tried it. But.

“You’re pretty handy with a rope, these days,” Dave says, and Klaus grins at him.

do you think dave was there when klaus got the klaus loves dave tattoo? what wouldve been his reaction?

“You don’t actually have to tell me what it means,” Dave says. “If you don’t want to.”

He’s looking at the tattoo again, mostly as an excuse to touch Klaus’s bare stomach, not that he needs much of an excuse at this point, but also because it’s the most beautiful tattoo he’s ever seen in person. Every line is delicate, perfectly balanced between his ribs. It’s symmetrical, but when Dave gets close enough, he can spot all the little natural variations in strokes that show it was done freehand.

“Nah, I’ll tell you,” Klaus says.

Dave should probably check over his shoulder to make absolutely sure they’re still alone, but Klaus’s skin is right under his nose, so he leans in the rest of the way and kisses it before he pulls back.

“Okay, Klaus says, scooting up until he’s nearly in Dave’s lap in the dirt, “keep in mind that my Thai is rusty, and dad only really ever taught us how to do PR and negotiate hostage release anyway, so I’m taking Phichit’s word on some of this, but it looks right, I think? It doesn’t not look right. The top line is right, I know that.”

“Start there, then.”

Klaus leans back on one hand, which stretches out his whole torso, and Dave almost reaches out and grabs his waist, but Dave’s been asking this question for five days, so he doesn’t immediately derail things by getting handsy. Klaus’s hips will still be there in a few minutes, probably.

“So this,” Klaus says, pointing to ยู with his free hand, “that’s U - basically U, an english U - and that,” he points to เอ, “is A.”

“Umbrella Academy?”

“Yep,” Klaus says, popping the p.

“I love that,” Dave says. “It’s like - it’s a tattoo for your family?”

It’s not surprising. For all that Klaus insists he doesn’t mind hanging around in this decade until Dave can finish his tour, there’s a look he gets when he talks about his brothers and sisters. It’s probably why he understood so easily when he asked Dave to come home with him, and Dave said he would, but that he needed to go home first, too.

“Sort of, I guess,” Klaus says. He taps the ยู with his finger again, then the เอ.

“So the rest is - what, all their names?”

“My name’s the next line,” Klaus says. He runs his finger along the boxes that spell out เคลาส์. “That’s pretty close to Klaus, which is cool. Maybe that’s why dad had me do Thai? I always thought Thai, German, and Tamil were a random main three to give me, but - yeah, that’s K, L, these little guys,” he points with two fingers at เ and า, “that’s like, owu.”

“Is this Hargreeves?” Dave touches the เดวิด along the bottom row, which is maybe playing with fire in terms of keeping them on topic, but also, Klaus is nice to touch. “It doesn’t look long enough.”

“Not, um,” Klaus says. “Not Hargreeves, no.”

“It can’t be everyone’s names, there aren’t enough spaces for that, either. Is it Ben?”

“Not Ben.”

“I recognize this,” Dave says, and he traces over the character at the start of the row. “Owu.”

“Part of it, yeah.”

Dave glances up at Klaus’s face, which is a little more flushed than it usually gets while Dave’s still above the belt. 

“This one was sort of the hard one,” Klaus says, all in a rush, “because like, obviously when you’re going between languages, there are sounds they have and sounds they don’t, there are a ton of sounds in Thai that it takes like a million English letters to make, if you even can, so this - we had to get creative, I guess, and we, here,” he points at วิ, “this is technically a W sound? Because there’s no, um. There’s not really a V.”

Dave looks at it.

“So it’s not perfect,” Klaus says. “These are D, though,” and he points to the ด on either side, “and that - I think it mostly gets the point acro-“

Dave grabs his waist and kisses him.

Klaus makes a soft noise and slips his arms around Dave’s shoulders, and they do what they inevitably end up doing whenever they have time to themselves. They’re both scratchy with stubble and Dave’s mouth probably tastes how the rest of him smells, but Klaus presses forward and licks between his teeth anyway. Dave likes Klaus’s body no matter what state it’s in. Maybe that goes both ways.

“You are crazy,” Dave says, when he can bring himself to pull away.

Klaus nips at Dave’s lip. “S’that the good kind of crazy?”

“The best kind of - Klaus, you got my name,” Dave says, and then he laughs, he can’t help it. “You better hope we don’t piss off anyone who reads Thai.”

“If we do,” Klaus says, “I can - well, I can either be really formal or really aggressive, and I might accidentally call you a prisoner? But-“

Dave kisses Klaus some more.

They have time together tonight, but not that much time, so they let the kisses trail off after a while. Klaus is fully in Dave’s lap now, his legs wrapped around Dave’s hips, his fingers in Dave’s hair. He’s beautiful, even coated in a layer of dirt from the last four days of marching. He’ll be beautiful after four more weeks of it, four more months, right up until they march all the way out of here.

“You’re not mad?” Klaus asks, softly.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been less mad.”

Klaus hums and tucks his nose into Dave’s curls.

Dave rests the tips of his first two fingers on the รัก at the very center of the temple. “What’s this one?”

“Ah,” Klaus says into Dave’s forehead. “Well.”

“It’s just one letter, right? Or two?”

“No, that’s actual Thai.” Klaus sits back enough to look at his own belly again. “Yeah, rạk.”

“Rak.”

“Loves,” Klaus says, “is, um. Is what that means.”

Dave opens his mouth, but nothing comes out of it, so he shuts it again.

“Oh, sweetheart,” Klaus says, “don’t-” and he swipes his thumbs over Dave’s cheeks, which are wet. “You already knew that. I tell you all the time.”

“I know,” Dave says.

“Do I need to tell you more often?”

“No,” Dave says, and then he sniffs, embarrassingly. “No, it just.”

He’s not actually sure what it just was leading up to, so he lets Klaus pull his face into the curve of his neck instead. He wraps one arm around Klaus’s waist, and keeps the other between them. The skin is a little raised everywhere the tattoo gun landed. Maybe Dave can learn the shapes of the letters by touch before they heal.

“This is it,” Klaus says, “just FYI. This is, like - this is the gesture. I don’t know if I really have another one in me.”

“I don’t think I could handle another one.”

“I do,” Klaus says. “Love you, a lot, so.”

“I love you, too.”

“I know, baby.”

“I really,” Dave says, “really, really wish we had a door that locked, right now.”

“I’m not saying I’m counting down,” Klaus says, “but-“

“Four months,” Dave says into his collarbone.

“My lucky number.”

Dave lets Klaus hold him a little longer while he gets himself together. He doesn’t start bawling the moment he pulls back and sees Klaus’s stomach, which is a good sign. That’d get inconvenient, with Klaus’s shirt allergy.

He steers Klaus back off his lap and onto the dirt so he can get in close and look at the tattoo some more, and then he kisses it again, right where it says how Klaus feels about him.

“I’ll get one for you,” Dave says. “Once we’re home.”

“Nah, you don’t gotta.”

“I want to. Does anyone in your family speak Yiddish?”

“Just Five,” Klaus says. “He used to, at least. I dunno, forty years in the apocalypse, conjugation is probably the first thing to go.”

“So if I get something really romantic-“

“Oh god, do it, I wanna see his face.”

“Okay,” Dave says. “I’ll get it, and then I’ll wait five days to tell you what it means.”

Klaus says, “Fair’s fair,” and kisses the tip of Dave’s nose.
