Things were so much easier when I was depressed about my job. Now i'm in a career that I love and, consequently, spend 10 hours a day at work.
A year ago I was chomping at the bit to get out and run, anything to get away from the heinosity that was my boring desk job. Now I don't feel like I'm building the pyramids out of table salt but Jesus on a cracker, when am I going to find time to exercise?????
Every day this week I have taken my laptop, weights and yoga mat into the public washroom and doing the Jillian Michaels Body Revolution. Please lord let this help me a bit. I welcome any and ALL suggestions.
Back on the Tumblr Wagon!
My serious guilt watching this dash blow up with awesomeness has finally worn me down--I'm jumping in and reporting on my health at least every few days. Sargent Diva, reporting for duty!
I don’t believe in guilty pleasures. If you fucking like something, like it. That’s what’s wrong with our generation: that residual punk rock guilt, like, “You’re not supposed to like that. That’s not fucking cool.” Don’t fucking think it’s not cool to like Britney Spears’ “Toxic.” It is cool to like Britney Spears’ “Toxic”! Why the fuck not? Fuck you! That’s who I am, goddamn it! That whole guilty pleasure thing is full of fucking shit.

Exactly.
Finally some motivation written the way real people talk.

I'm about to tell you the story of the WORST run of my life. There will be recounting of some unfortunate chafing, some crying, some earworms that would have caused anyone to joyfully rip their own ears off. If this isn't something you'd care to hear about, do yourself a favor and avert the gaze now because this tale is not for the faint of heart.
In March I ran a half marathon in 2:48 and I was thrilled. It was my first trip to the rodeo, so to speak. I did everything right, training-wise and the weather, oh dear reader--the weather was beautiful. It was a pure dream, one from which I did not want to wake and in that moment, I knew there would be many more races in my future. I thought they would all be that good or, dare I say it, even better and I thought thatI COULD BE EVEN BETTER. I decided to run another and, come hell or high water, I'd run that mother in 2:30. So I enlisted two friends and we set to complete a half iron-man relay. Sadly, my training was off due to an injury but I had done the mileage and knew I could at least complete the race.
We were requested to show up at 5:30 AM. The swimmer swam swimmingly, the biker biked beautifully and I..waited. There was HEED but little to no food. I waited in the midday sun for 7 hours until, at 11:45, I exchanged chips with my teammate and began the journey that shall be forever inscribed in my brain as my slow descent into hell.
11:45 am, Williamsburg, VA. 95% humidity and 93 degrees fahrenheit. I began my run as I always do--2 minutes run, 1 minute walk, one foot in front of the other. At mile 5 my ipod conked out. That meant no more music and no more beeps to cue me for my intervals. Luckily, my slowly overheating brain has an amazing sense of humor and though that it would be awesome to have the Backstreet Boys' I Want it That Way circle through my brain. Prior to that I was actually doing ok. I made the 5 miles in 1.10, FANTASTIC. the next 3 miles were uneventful, I fartleked that shiz and would run to tree number 45, then walk. I saw 2 people completely crumbled on the ground, getting medical attention. I had to stop 3 times to the port a potty for an emergency evacuation. NOT GOOD. There was *AVERT GAZE HERE* liquid lava pouring out of me followed by the ring of fire that you would not believe. Rut roh, welcome to dehydration. And then came mile 8.
At mile 8 I suddenly thought that Snuffelupagus had squarely planted himself on my chest and the heat slapped me in the face. I thought, ok, walk, just change and walk more then run. As I approached a water station, the woman looked at me and said, you are shivering. Two more people said, you're body is shutting down, but you are going to do this. You know, there is something so amazing about these people. I started crying. I said, I can't do this. Someone gave me salt pills, threw a sponge down my shirt, dumped ice water over my head and said, you can fucking do this. And that's when it happened. I threw up some bile twice and made the decision to finish. I would have to speed walk the rest of the way. On my way, I literally passed a turtle. I looked down at him and said out loud, "you and me, baby. Here we go." I know it was 93 degrees because I asked someone the temp on my way and they looked at their car and told me. I was getting slower and hotter and my body was breaking down, but I was going to finish. By Satan's taint, I was not going to be a DNF. I was so delerious that I walked through a stream because I thought I saw the arrow for the runners going across the way. I had to crawl back over the stream and just book it.
And then..there it was. A woman said to me, if you run, you can make it in 7 minutes! So I did. I ran. I ran and I was a hot tranny mess. I saw my husband and friends at the finish line. I started crying. And as they say, I ran and cried, ran and cried. 3:24. Nearly 40 minutes after my last half.
You'd think I'd give up. You'd think I'd just say, I'm not an athlete. What the hell am I doing? You'd think that I would look at these pictures of myself and say, if I were thinner, I could have done it. Hell, I was ALWAYS the last one picked on the team for as long as I can remember. What business do I have doing these races? I mean, I still see the signs that say "ATHLETES ONLY" and hesitate before I enter. You'd think that my deep disappointment in not besting my last time would break me.
You might think that. You'd be wrong.
December 1st, 2012. Annapolis, MD Half Marathon. I'll see you there.
The Traveling Austin Shirt!!!
it now stands, I have the Austin Shirt and we now have no list. Does anyone want to start a new list? It seems to me that just because some people aren’t feeling the love, doesn’t mean we should just stop connecting. The shirt is a great idea and I’d love to pass it on to some energized, fitness lovers like myself. I’m happy to generate a list so, come on my friends! Let’s GO!!!
O. M. God
Tumbleristas--I've been away for a few weeks pursuing my non-fitness related dreams. Apparently the shiz hit the fan while I was away. What's going on here? What did I miss? Who has run a 2:10 marathon in the last few weeks?
The Traveling Austin Shirt
Thanks to Michaeldoeslife, I got the shirt and took a post-class pic. Does anyone have the list so I know who gets it next? Ren? Bueller? Bueller?
AAAAH!
I REALLY want to do this zumba class tonight but I know I need to rest my leg. PISSED.
Good News, Great News and Shitty Fashion
It's amazing the things that can happen in a year.
Last year I was confused, angry and generally a ball of salty bitchiness cascading through the atmosphere. That was then. In January, a few friends (unbeknownst to each other) helped open my eyes to what I really want in life and where I want to be headed. I'm pleased to report that, thanks to some truly amazing people in my life, I will be leaving my job on Friday and heading to a position at a television studio. If you had told me ten years ago that this would be my life (two amazing kids, a fantastic husband, supportive community and a job in television) I'd have yelled at you. The truth is, I wasn't ready then to see how amazing it is to follow your dream and to BE OK with things, well, being ok. It's like I wanted to punish myself constantly, like I craved rejection. I'm hoping that this brings a bit more peace in my life. Lord knows Zoloft and meditation only take you so far.
Fitness-wise, I've been slacking. Not because I want to but because I have had a pulled hamstring. I've had it for about 6 weeks. The pain subsides enough for me to do a kickboxing class and then I put my sandals back on and the pain comes back. HEY, here's a thought, Einstein--MAYBE IT'S YOUR UNSUPPORTIVE SHOES THAT YOU HAVE BEEN WEARING EVERY DAY FOR THE PAST 6 WEEKS. Oh...damn. So today I am wearing sneakers and the pain is gone. Dear lord, will I ever be able to wear a fucking fashionable shoe in my life? I guess having the footwear style of Nurse Ratched is my fate if I want to continue kicking some marathon-ass. I'll wait another week, just to be safe but I'm pretty sure it's my ferkachta shoes. If you have any suggestions about footwear that doesn't make me look homeless, shout it out.
I'm still here!
Holy saints in a tracksuit, Batman! I have been busy. I've been doing yoga in the office but man alive, I need to get running again as I have a date with another halfey in early September--keep me honest, Tumblers--I beg you.
As part of this whole honesty thing, I also think it's only fair to tell you that I have been moonlighting as a recapper for possibly THE WORST show on the air right now. Yes, I watch so you don't have to. I accept small donations: The Choice Recap.
Desiderata
This blog has been about taking back my life. The past 3 days have been very difficult for me and I have had an internal struggle as to whether to blog about them--being called some pretty harsh things: the most selfish person in the world, the works. Chances are, whatever horrible thing you may think about me, I have thought it about myself and ten-fold. But guess what? Neither of us are correct.
We all make mistakes and those mistakes do not define our worth nor do they snuff out the light within all of us. No matter who you are, your journey is a hard one (that's what she said) and whatever struggles you carry, demons you battle, know that the person next to you is battling demons as well. They may not have the same shape horns or fangs, they may not have the same color fur but they are just as real and terrifying.
Please, be kind to one another and to yourself--for your humanity is sacred and so is your journey. Self-love and self-fulfillment is one of the hardest things to integrate in your life, especially if you have been deemed trash, worthless, and unlovable. If someone kicks you on your way to climbing out of the pit you have been thrown in, KNOW THIS--that is not about you--that is about THEM. I love you and I am doing my very damndest to love myself just as much--join me.
DESIDERATA, by Max Ehrmann
Go placidly amidst the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labours and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its shams, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.
YES, So much word to this.
More on the IT
Yep, it makes sense--all my recent runs have been on the treadmill. If anyone has exercises or suggestions, PLEASE bring them forth.
The Time Has Come
Damnit. A few days ago I was doing yoga and i noticed a general tightness beginning near the outside of my left knee and radiating toward the bootie. I stretched, I ran, I danced but the pain remains--not walking or running uphill--just downhill. The pain is such that I was walking down an escalator about 10 minutes ago and it was like tiny Keebler elves suddenly launched their death stars at my rump shaker. Google tells me this is IT Band evil. I didn't think I was training THAT much but I do have over 500 miles on my shoes (that shiz is still crazy to me, by the way). So I just bought a foam roller and have vowed to use my new running shoes. Please baby Cheezits, tell me the pain will go away. I've got another half marathon to run in September for criminy sake.
