Being born and raised in Piltover, you were taught three things; stay out of "grown-up" business, never date outside of your royal status, and never mess with the people of the Undercity. You followed these rules with ease, but when a new personal knight from outside is assigned to you. You begin to consider that maybe these rules are looser than they seem.

"One day, I am gonna grow wings."
The sun's shine enveloped your room in an almost comforting embrace, it didn't take long for this light to reach your eyes and wake you up. Life in Piltover was simple, easy, a breeze, and you liked it that way. You were born into your family's historical wealth, life was served to you on a diamond platter, as a kid you had gotten everything you wanted imaginable. Jewels, ponies, toys upon toys, clothes made out of the finest silks in the world. But you had always felt like something was missing, it made you feel spoiled, ungrateful. But it didn't have anything to do with money or prizes; you didn't know what it was. Not until you met her.
You stared at yourself in the mirror as your ladies-in-waiting had begun to work around your dress of choice for the day, you could feel them tighten the pieces of fabric in certain areas while loosening other parts to compliment your body shape in the best way possible. Sometimes you'd let out a wince and one of the two would mumble an apology before loosening it just a bit, then tightening it later anyways. You remembered hearing your father talking to the guards about some "knight" that they'd discovered in the Undercity. You had brushed it off, assuming that he was just planning to recruit them as part of the general army. But it wasn't until breakfast when you realized this situation was bigger than you'd imagined.
"My apologies, what?"
Your sip of orange juice had come to an immediate pause as you heard your father utter words that had never come out of his mouth before.
"My men have found this knight in the Undercity, me and your mother thought she'd be a perfect fit as your personal guard. Not forever, of course. Just until we find you a suitable heir."
She?
Never in your life have you wished so hard that you were dreaming until now. Your family had heard of the recent royal kidnappings happening around with the neighboring kingdoms, but what your father was insisting was more than ridiculous. From the Undercity nonetheless? What was he thinking? You terribly wanted to fight back against your fathers declaration, suggest that you pick from the existing group of knights in your kingdom. But all you could squeak out was; "The Undercity?"
"Yes," He said, taking a quick sip out of his ridiculously shiny gold goblet before continuing. "The Undercity." He repeated, meanwhile you'd been looking at him as if he'd suddenly grown three heads, shaking yours in disbelief as you countered him. "I thought we were never supposed to-"
"I know, but we thought that this would be a good exception. Just this once. Your mother was the one who insisted, actually." He gave a quick nod towards your mom who had an eerily pleasant smile on her face. You glanced over for a moment before looking back at your father, biting the inside of your cheek as the alarms in your head began to go off. Just before your teeth sank any deeper, your mothers words broke the bubbling silence.
"Would you like to meet her?"
And thatâs how you found yourself in front of one of your castle's cells, staring at an uncomfortably idle woman. Her back was facing you and she was dressed in a raggedy light brown blouse with the sleeves rolled up at her shoulders, along with brown pants that seemed to be torn near the ends. Her shoulders moved up and down with every breath she took, and it wasn't until she looked over her shoulder and towards you that you noticed this person was, in fact; a woman. Her powder grey eyes stared you down in a way that made your body shiver. She had vibrant cherry pink hair, one side of her head had been shaved off while the other was longer and messy, it looked outgrown--you could tell from the uneven ends, or maybe it was just a terrible haircut.
The silence between you two was unwavering, neither of you dared to speak up for a while until you decided to make the first move. A deep breath entered your body before speaking, "It's you, correct?" The woman's gaze tore away from yours, staring at the wall in the direction her head had been turned to before responding, "Is anyone else in these cellars?" She proceeded to nod towards the cell beside her. "Yeah, it's me." Then, she fully turned around to face you, letting you get a good look at her features. But what caught your eye first was the unique tattoo planted just below her left eye. Vi. Her name was Vi.
You were too caught up in your head to notice that she began walking towards the bars that'd been caging her in, you pulled yourself away from the bars. Protectively crossing your arms as if to cage yourself in from the woman. She was from the Undercity, who knew what type of tricks she'd pull if you had gotten any closer. Would she have killed you with her bare hands? Cut you? As a child, you'd heard about the stories from guards who made trips to the Undercity. The people were ugly, and the royal party was even uglier. Not in how they looked, but how they acted. "What? Are you scared that I'll kill you?" Her expression was unreadable, but you could tell that she didn't want to be here either. You didn't reply, just continuing to stare at her as if she was some sort of creature. "Oh yeah, I forgot. I come from the big, terrifying, Undercity. Where everyone's a monster." The words that rolled off of her tongue were dripped in sarcasm, clearly.
Your eyes narrowed, sizing her up before replying. "If my people decided to hold you in a cell, then clearly I have my suspicions to be cautious of you." A scoff left the pink-haired woman's lips, shaking her head in disbelief. "Well that's clearly going against the new role your people have given me, don't you think?" There was a slight squeeze in your chest, who did this woman think she was? "Vi, correct?" A look of surprise flickered on her face before it turned back into a monotone one. "That's me." She then proceeded to say your name in return, and your heart nearly froze. "How do you-" A laugh interrupted your sentence before you could finish, "Oh, I don't know. Maybe it's because you're one of the most talked about people in the world? There's not a day that goes by in the Undercity where I don't hear something that involves you."
Your eyes nearly rolled all the way to the back of your head, it was flattering to hear that the people of the Undercity had taken a liking to your name. You didn't know what exactly they'd been hearing, but it boosted your ego just a bit to know that people were talking about you. Vi didn't miss the spark in your eyes at her words, "I can see you've taken a liking to that." Her voice was less firm, but you could tell there was still a hint of caution in it. "Perchance." You lifted your shoulders in a shrug before letting them fall, walking away from the woman's cell.
A few days had passed since you'd last seen her, you heard from your ladies-in-waiting that they were prepping her for some sort of ceremony. You had really hoped that your parents didn't make some special routine for the whole "guard" thing. But you had come to the realization that your wishes never came true as you stood in the throne room, wrapped in beautiful lilac patterns and prettier silks that complimented your features perfectly. There was chatter and whispers amongst the guards, some had been saying that inviting someone from the Undercity to take care of their beloved princess was pure insanity, others said that they should have been given the honor instead. However, all of the mutters and whispers seemed to have faded the moment she walked into the room.
You could feel the air in the room still in her presence. When you had first seen her she was rough and dirty, but now she was polished and confident. She didn't have her helmet on, it was being held by her left arm which was covered in thick steel, almost like a second pair of skin. The remaining light coming from the sunset shined on her breastplate that seemed to have been perfectly polished seconds before she appeared, its shine was almost blinding. The shoulder guards were etched with intricate designs, and underneath them you could just see the layers of chainmail intertwined together in a crotchet-like pattern. As she began to make her way to you, the sound of metal boots and greaves clinking into one-another filled the room, alongside the faint sounds of trumpets playing an almost hypnotizing tune.
It wasn't long before she stood only a few feet away from the stairs that led to you, and when her eyes met yours; you could feel your breath halt. It wasn't a look that held underlying threats or lies, it was one of determination. As if her only reason to exist was for you, only you. Your father began to read out the ceremonial oath that he most likely had made a few days ago in preparation for this moment. As he continued to speak, you continued to stare into her gaze, and she stared into yours.
"Do you swear to allow her to command your life so that she may walk unscathed?"
"I swear."
"Do you swear that no blade shall pierce her heart while you draw breath?"
"I swear."
"And do you swear to shield her from darkness in order to carry her hopes into the light?"
"I swear."
With an approving nod from your father, Vi began to make her way up the steps and towards you. Her eyes never faltered from yours once as she finally reached your presence, she slowly went down on one knee and lifted her hand up to grab yours. As her calloused hands met your soft ones, you could your entire body shiver. It wasn't a shiver out of fear, you knew that. Then, she brought your knuckles to her lips, planting a firm kiss on them before gently pulling away and speaking.
"I, Violet. Swear to protect you, until my dying breath. ___." Then, a faint whisper of your name left her lips. So quiet as if she only meant it for the two of you to hear. The tone in her eyes had changed from one of determination to a monotone one, reminding you that this was just an act. Nothing more. It was just her job. But the small smile that appeared on her face right after made you sure of one thing.
You were screwed.
The first days were easy, simple. The only struggles you had were slight tweaks to your morning routine; everything you'd handle on your own was now being handled by Vi, she would always follow you around like a shadow. However, for the amount of time you two would spend together; there was little to no conversation. Sometimes it'd be small talk, "The weather today is hotter than normal." or "My dad was saying that he wanted to potentially build another sector of houses behind our castle." There was nothing deep, and it was barely scratching the surface. Not that either of you cared, you were just a princess waiting to potentially find your prince charming, and she was counting the days until she could return to the Undercity. It was completely professional between the two of you.
After a while; it began to get almost irritating. She'd follow you to places as minor as the bathroom and wait outside until you were finished. If you had taken too long, she'd give you a quick knock and you'd reply to signal that you were okay. Sometimes she'd even stay until you'd gotten out of the shower. It'd set you off, badly. There was one night in particular where you had been having a pretty off day, and Vi wasn't making it any easier. The glow of the moon had creeped into your room through the beautifully crafted doors that led to your balcony, your now warm fingers raked through your freshly wet hair. Peaceful moments like these were now rare; moments where it could just be you and that'd be more than enough. But your moment of peace was interrupted by an annoyingly soothing voice coming from the corner of the room.
"It's almost time for bed, princess." Vi stated as she leaned against the wall beside the entrance to your bedroom, your once peaceful reaction melted into one of annoyance. You looked over your shoulder, catching the sight of her. "I know that. Could you give me a few seconds to myself before I sleep, please?" You tried to keep your tone as nice and respectful as possible, but there was an underlying hint of hostility beneath your words. There was an uncomfortable pause before she replied. "I'm afraid I can't do that." Her tone was relaxed, almost as if she'd expected you to just nod and go on with your night--but you didn't do that.
"I can almost guarantee no one will come in and swoop me away, it's only for a few minutes Vi. Let me have a moment to myself." She shook her head in response, "You said almost, I can't risk it." A shaky sigh left your lips, you began to grow impatient. "Violet. Please." Your voice held more hostility in it than you intended there to be. "You follow me around like a shadow all day, I'm sure a few minutes by myself during the night won't hurt." Your body had turned to face the guard, her eyes narrowed as she met your gaze. Almost as if she was burning your face into her brain. "I'm sorry, have you princesses ever heard of the word no? It means I won't allow you."
If this were a cartoon, your face would be boiling red with bundles of steam fuming out of your ears. Was she seriously talking to you like a kid right now? If so, you weren't gonna have it. "Seriously? I let you follow me around like a hawk all day, but when I want one moment to myself you're suddenly so defensive?" A scoff left your lips, "You Undercity people are persistent." Her expression seemed to harden at your words, and you could feel a hint of regret begin to eat at your soul. She didn't reply immediately, which left an uncomfortable stillness in your room. Violet seemed to be at war with her mind, and the way she looked at you as if she was about to tear you apart didn't soothe your anxiety either. With a frustrated sigh, she opened the door and made her way out. "Fine. Only for a minute or two, and then I'm coming back in." You didn't reply as she slammed the door shut, and you didn't smile. You had finally earned a few moments to yourself, but it wasn't as peaceful as you yearned for. It was full of tension and worry. Had you said the wrong thing to her? Who knows what could've happened if she snapped?
Before you knew it, your time was up. And she had quietly entered the room in contrast to how loudly she exited it. The silence in the room was now more uncomfortable than it was before, neither of you daring to apologize to the other. It was just a job, after all. But what made this more insufferable was the fact that you two could barely even stand each other. You went to sleep with a heavy heart that night, and Violet went to sleep with a tight feeling in hers.
The next morning was filled with much more tension than usual, the silence was not only deafening--but ridiculously awkward. No small talk, no back-handed banter; just silence. To be honest, you liked it that way. It made you feel better if you ignored the reason why you two were so cold to each other in the first place. The whole day had ended up being like this, breakfast was silent, so was lunch, dinner, even in your spare time you found yourself doing absolutely nothing. How could you when there was a now irritated Undercity woman breathing down your neck? After dinner had finished, instead of going to your sleeping quarters; you made your way into the garden that was centered in the middle of your castle. You could hear the faint sound of water running and crickets chirping among the trees.
"We shouldn't be here, princess." The woman spoke beside you, but her actions contradicted her words as she continued to walk. Her words went in one of your ears and out the other. "Just for one night." Your voice held a softer tone, but just a hint of firmness to remind her that you'd still been fed up from last night; and to not make it worse. Still, she retaliated. "We're not doing this again, let's get you back to your room." Your footsteps halted, seriously? You whipped your body back around, clearly upset. "Violet, please." There was a pause before you continued. "I don't need you treating me like I'm some child, I just want a breath of fresh air, is that so wrong?"
"Well, you can breathe back in your room." She offered you a sarcastic smile before immediately dropping it. "Now let's go." Before you could counter it, she had already gotten ahold of your wrist, forcefully dragging you back. "Vi, please!" You tried to use force to pull your hand away, but Violet was stupidly strong. Eventually, you managed to yank it away which caused her to turn back around and look at you. She crossed her arms before sighing and saying, "Fine. Plead your case."
"I'm not pleading my case." You barked, a hand on your hip. "I understand that you're just doing your job, but I have no freedom anymore. You won't even let me greet the townspeople for more than 30 minutes." Vi's face was surprisingly monotone as she stared you down, a flicker of guilt appearing on her grey eyes. You noticed this almost instantly, and you started to drown in a feeling of regret. You closed your eyes, and said the two words that you'd never thought you'd say to a person like her.
"I'm sorry."
You opened your eyes back up to notice that her expression of sorrow had turned into one of surprise, it quickly melted into somewhat of a smirk. "I would've never thought to hear those words from you." Violet's tone was much softer this time. You bit the inside of your cheek before replying. "Don't test your luck, I might just take it back." She let out a chuckle to that, a real chuckle. Not an awkward one or a sarcastic one. A genuine, true laugh. It made your stomach tighten, and you couldn't stop the small smile that appeared on your face.
The two of you went to bed that night happy, happy that maybe this job didn't have to be so hard for Vi. And happy that maybe you could possibly befriend your knight in shining armor. And when you'd awake the next morning, the both of you knew that becoming awfully close with one-another was dangerous. In Piltover, your father had made you strictly aware of three rules. Stay out of "grown-up" business, never date outside of your royal status, and never mess with the people of the Undercity.
But once her powder grey eyes met yours, you knew for a fact that she was the thing that was missing your entire life. And you began to consider that maybe, just maybe, breaking these rules wouldn't hurt a little.
Yelena Belova. The White Widow. The one who saved you from the Red Room, your closest friend, and your occasional hook-up.

"I don't really mind when you play me."
A sudden warmth hit the lids of your eyes as you tried to remember the events of the night before. You contorted your face in discomfort as the liquor you drank last night had started moving to your head. Right, Yelena had come over as she does nearly every other weekend. You guys ate, drank, sang a terrible cover of Party Rock Anthem, and then spent the rest of the night all over each other. It was the same routine for as long as you could remember.
You knew there'd be no presence beside you, there never was. Still, you turned your head in hopes that maybeâjust maybe she decided to stay with you for a slow, lazy morning. As you turned your head, you had a feeling that you were just being delusional. The empty right side of your mattress proved you right. With a quiet sigh, you slowly got out of bed and began to stretch your limbs in an attempt to wash the disappointment off. It helped little, but you were more awake now.
The rest of the day consisted of dealing with annoying costumers who complained that their iced latte was "too bitter", or others that said their coffee was too "mild". Seriously? It's coffee. You thought. What more do these people need? A foot massage? A soft snicker left your lips as you pushed open the glass door and left for the night. As much as you hated the place, Caleb's Coffee had decent pay and helped you with your impossibly high townhouse bills. You took the bus home, admiring how the once baby blue sky had melted out into a dark navy that was littered with white specs of stars.
There had been a lot of traffic on the way back home, just as youâd expected. However, what you did not expect to come home to a familiar blonde laying upside down on your living room couch. Her head was hanging off of the cushions that her back was laying on, while her legs were bent over the back of said-sofa. She seemed to be watching some sort of movie, but you were too distracted by her to even bat an eye at the television. Her blonde locks were put into one of those beautiful braided buns that you always admired, and she was wearing her white skin-tight suit. Her large green eyes had a hint of sleepiness behind them as she stared at the TV, lashes fluttering every few seconds.
You were too busy analyzing her to notice that her gaze had moved over towards you, her facial expressions softening. âHiii.â She said in a singing-tone, moving her legs down to fit on the rest of the cushions; now laying on her side as she watched you. A breath you hadn't realized you were holding in left your lips as you made your way over to the blonde, gently moving her legs off of the cushions to make some space for yourself. âHey,â You started, looking down at Yelena as she watched you. âWhatâre you doing here? You never come over on weekdays.â
She couldnât stop the small smirk that appeared on her face, sitting up and shrugging her shoulders. âYou know me, Iâm unpredictable.â Her accent was thicker than usual, which signaled you that she was tired. You had to admit, her stupid accent had been your guilty pleasure for such a long time. The way certain words would roll off of her tongue so smoothly made your stomach flutter in ways you didnât even think were possible.
âI suppose you arenât wrong.â Your soft smile had melted into a grin, leaning back against the couch as you subconsciously began to watch the movie sheâd put on. There had been a gap of silence between the two of you until a thought had filled up your mind. âHowâd you even get in here?â Your attention momentarily shifted over to Yelena, glancing over at the woman. âPlease donât tell me you broke my window screens again.â
Yelena let out a small laugh at your words, shaking her head. âI didnât break them, more like.. I moved them to the side.â You let out a small groan at her words, playfully nudging her. âWhat an ass you are.â The blonde rolled her eyes in response, letting a comforting silence fill the air in between the two of you as the movie played. A few moments passed by, and you swore you could feel something begin to graze your right leg. You paid no mind to it, thinking that Yelena probably scooted closer to you and you hadnât noticed until now.
Another moment passed; now the touch was more evident. You chose to ignore it until the Russianâs hand was now fully on your right thigh. âLena.â You warned, glancing over at her. âIâm not doing anything.â Her tone was full of fake-innocence, giving your thigh a small squeeze for reassurance. You chose to let her be. . . Until you felt her move higher and higher and higher. âYelena.â You repeated in the same tone, beginning to tense as you felt her near the area where you needed her most.
Her fingers moved up to the bottom of your face, gently brushing against your jawline before nudging you to look in her direction. Once your eyes fell on her gaze, you could feel your stomach do backflips. The eye contact between the two of you was heavy and filled with unsaid words that either of you never dared to utter once, her eyes flickered down to your lipsâsilently asking for permission to continue. You nodded rapidly. You always did. Every. Single. Time.
It didnât take long for her lips to be on yours, the movie being long forgotten along with your clothing. The same routine you two had agreed to all of those years ago. It started once Yelena had freed you and the other Widows from the Red Room with her sister Natasha. You remembered the night when it first happened, it was a drunk accident. A friday night at the club led to an intense session of pants, gasps, and sweet-nothings that were shared between you two in an uncomfortably tiny bathroom. When you awoke beside her the next morning, and realized that you were nakedâyou knew the two of you had to never talk about this again, or keep it between yourselves.
You knew the Russian didn't have time for romance, or anything with affection in general. But you didn't want to admit to her that you'd been falling in love these past couple of months, so when the night was over, and all of your energy was spent; holding her in your arms was more than enough to treat the aching feeling in your heart.
The two of you were now laid on your bed upstairs, your head resting on the blonde's chest as she ran her fingers through your hair. Her lips planted against the top of your head every now and then, a silent reminder that she was still there. There was a soft silence between you two, the hum of your ventilator filling in the gaps. You looked up at Yelena, who seemed to be less than a millisecond away from drifting into slumber. And then, before you could even think about it; you muttered the three words that could make any simple conversation so much more deep.
"What are we?"
The words slipped out of your mouth so smoothly they almost sounded casual. The blonde's gaze glanced back at where you were, responding after a moment of silence. "You know what we are, ĐОлаŃ." Her voice sounded almost indifferent if it weren't for the shaky undertone you could just make out. There was another gap of now uncomfortable silence as her words sank into your heart. You didn't expect anything else from the Russian, after allâyou two had agreed that romance was out of the picture no matter what.
The next morning, as expected; Yelena had left without a trace. You expected her to be back by the end of the week, but she didn't show up. There was no sign of her the week after that, and the week after. All those lonely nights you spent thinking about her, and the last words you uttered to her. Maybe if you had kept those thoughts to yourself, she'd be here right now; cuddling you to sleep.
Months passed, and now you began to forget the last time you ever saw her. The shifts at the cafe were getting longer, and rent started getting impossibly higher. It wasn't until on one particular night that you saw her again, sitting on the same exact sofa the last time your eyes had laid on her. She glanced over, immediately feeling her body tighten in anticipation. "ĐалŃŃĐșа. Hey." She sat up, nervously patting the empty space beside her. Before you could even process that she was only a few feet away from you, your body moved on it's own and sat beside her. When your gaze landed on hers, you could feel it become impossibly harder to act casual. You let out a strained "Hi", adjusting yourself on the cushion for a moment.
"Been a while, huh?" Her tone was filled with nerves, but you could tell she was trying to sound as casual as she possibly could. You nodded, "Yeah," There was another moment of silence, "It has been." Her gaze was unwavering, almost as if she was studying every detail of your face and burning it into her mind. The silence between you two wasn't awkward this time, it was tense, heavy silence. Your breaths started getting shorter and slower, waiting for her to break the unwavering stillness. But instead, you did.
"Where have you been?" Your voice was barely above a whisper, almost as if you were afraid to break the quiet between the two of you. After a few moments, she replied. "Nowhere new." Yelena was a woman of quick, short, sentences. They were often dripping with sarcasm or anger. But with you, her tone seemed so much more delicate and slower, hanging on every little word she said. "Don't lie to me, Lena." You shook your head, blinking rapidly. "I"m not lying to you." She replied almost instantly, gently moving a hand up to your cheek as if to comfort you. "Listen, I-" She interrupted herself with a soft sigh.
"I'm sorry for going MIA on you, I had a lot of stuff going on." Her thumb grazed your cheekbones as she spoke, looking into your eyes for some sort of reaction. You stayed silent for a few more moments, mouth slightly agape. "I just wished you would've told me." Yelena nodded in understanding, "I know, I was just caught up in stuff and frankly; I was scared. Scared to talk to you, I mean- especially after what you asked me the last night we met. Frankly, I was a coward. A stupid coward, and I couldn't give you the solid answer you were seeking for and for that I'm so sorry." You stared at her, letting the Russian ramble. You were surprised, you'd never seen her like this. So panicked. She was calm and cool, that's what started your awe for her in the first place. But seeing her worried and rambling pulled at your heartstrings.
Before she could continue any longer, you gently stopped her by planting your hands on either sides of the womans cheeks; cupping her face. Yelena stopped as quickly as she started, her eyelashes fluttering as she gazed into your stare. "It's okay," You murmured, leaning closer to her face before repeating the same reassuring words. "It's okay." They came out quieter the second time, mainly because you were so much closer to her face, and because it was seconds before you planted her lips against yours.
This kiss was different than the others, it wasn't filled with lust, it wasn't too hard or messy. It was soft. Almost as if she was afraid to bruise your precious lips. After a few moments, she pulled away and looked into your eyes. Her gaze was much softer this time, and you could see there was a smile creeping up on her face. You smiled back. You always did. She kissed you again, and again, and again.
When you awoke the next morning, you expected her to be gone as she always was. But this time, you could feel her warmth, the sound of soft breathing that wasn't yours. Your gaze fell on her sleeping body, her hair flowed across the pillow like waves, you could see her eyes moving slightly every now and then under her lids. And every now and then a soft groan or mumble would leave her mouth. You couldn't help but smile at the beautiful sight, although nothing much had been said between the two of you the night before. You knew that whatever you had going on changed drastically, but you'd always wake up with that pounding in your head, and that ache in your heart. No matter what, you'd always wake up with a love hangover.
