"The slogan 'refuse, reduce, reuse, repair and recycle' provides us with a hierarchy of strategies for dealing with waste. Refuse means to decide not to engage in the consuming action or task in the first place because it is not necessary. Reduce means to minimize the materials and energy required or the frequency of the consuming action. Reuse means either reuse for the same purpose or put to the next best use. Repair means to use skill and very limited additional resources to restore function. Recycle means to break down into more basic elements or materials before being reprocessed for the same or other uses."

[text ID: My Grandmother Reminisces with Peaches // Peaches you eat at night. / In the dark you can't see the insect bites. / How do they find the sweetest fruit? // Your grandfather would find it—the one / unblemished peach in someone's orchard— / and cool it in the stream for me. / I married him that year. // He wasn't a romantic, you know. / But he always left a bag of peaches / at my feet in the summer. / I carved pieces of that viscous fruit / and placed them on the parted lips / of my sleeping children. And they rose / chewing on the pulp. // Look at how my garden basalm has bloomed. / Dye your fingers with its petals—see if it lasts till first snow. / Snow, what precious flowers in this region. / With my ear resting on his chest, I could imagine its blossom. // My cheek dreamt well on his heart. end ID]
