The Aftermath
When I cashed out my portfolio, each share was worth $70.46. Resulting in a total account worth of $40,656.01. I decided to take out my initial $10,000 investment and place it back into my savings account, hoping someday to partake in another project like this one.
If anyone has a good organization in mind, Iâd love to hear about it!

oIn 2012, I came to the conclusion that my money was going to be donated to the organization Action Against Hunger. Their organization stood out in my eyes because they spend $0.93 for every dollar donated on program activities. Like me, they want their money to do the most good possible.

Where Should The Money Go?
After investing $10,000 into Waste Connections, I began thinking, âWhere should my money go to after the seven years?â This was a hard question because there was so many worthy places it could be donated. I knew one thing: I wanted to do the most good with the profits I earned.
A few weeks went by and the mom in the parking garage with the starving daughter came back into my mind. I started to wonder how many other starving families were there in American, and how many there were across the world. Everywhere I went in the next days I saw hungry people, specifically hungry children. I kept thinking to myself, this shouldnât be happening. Food access and clean water should be a natural right for humans.
From those days moving forward, I felt that I had a duty to give my money to an organization that fought against hunger.
On October 1, 2010, I decided that it was time for me to doing something positive in this time of darkness. After some research, I found that while a majority of our country was suffering from economic hardship there were a select handful of companies that still were thriving. These companies werenât thriving from success either, they were profiting from bad practices.
I began to realize that I could invest a portion of my money, create a portfolio and invest it into one of these deplorable companies. I could take their dirty money, capitalize on it and return it to do good.
I used $10,000 from my savings account and invested it into Waste Connections, Inc. With my money, I was able to purchase 577 shares at $17.33 a piece. I made the decision to let my money sit for seven years, so on October 1, 2017, all money invested would be removed.
Why Tumblr You Ask?
Iâve been receiving a lot of questions lately about why I choose to tell my story through Tumblr. For me, the answer is simple. Iâm a visual person and my story is visually rich. Tumblr is a platform that beautifully showcases imagery as the dominant element. In conclusion, I felt Tumblr would be the best way to document a public record for all to read.
It wasnât until a couple of weeks after the mom in the parking garage that I realized just how much suffering there was in American and in our world.Â
You see, every few weeks a group of my friends and I would go out for evening drinks in East Village. It was a great time for us to all catch up on life and to simply just enjoy the blessings we have be given. When it came time for us to meet, I slowly started receiving text messages by text message from my friends. It turns out they simply didnât have the extra cash to have drinks. That evening I saw the worldâs problems penetrating my personal bubble. Not only were complete strangers hurting but people I knew and loved were hurting as well.
In late September, I was walking home from the studio late one night. When I rounded the corner of my parking garage I saw a woman sitting on the ground in a dark corner, weeping. She was mumbling how she couldnât feed her daughter and that her hunger pains were too much for her to handle. I took out a $20 bill, all the cash I had in my purse and placed it at her feet. I told her to go buy a hot meal and take it home to her baby girl. I knew times were hard in our economy but that evening was the first time I witnessed itâs affects on people.
