Chinese Backlash over Houston Rockets GM’s Tweet

Chinese businesses cut ties with the American basketball team Houston Rockets over a now-deleted tweet from General Manager Daryl Morey. 

GM Daryl Morey posted a tweet that read “Fight For Freedom. Stand With Hong Kong,” showing support for the pro-democracy protesters causing a major backlash from China.

China has been having a growing influence on Hong Kong over the years that is causing the anti-government protests because protesters fear China will have more control of the nation.

Today most people have access to get their news straight off their phone. Technology has advanced so much that we have access to search for news on our own social media accounts. In a place where it was designed for people to express their own opinions, people still receive criticism if it does not follow their own beliefs.

For someone to be judged for expressing their own thoughts should not have got so much backlash or at least received this much attention to be labeled as news.

According to the Washington Post, the tweet was compared to the racial comment of Los Angeles Clipper’s former own Donald Sterling and demanding Morey to be removed from the league like Sterling. 

The Houston Rocket’s owner apologizes to the backlash, but it did not stop major Chinese companies to stop cutting ties with the Houston Rockets.

Fair Reason Makes Fair Pay

California passed SB 206 on Sept.30, 2019, known as the Fair Pay To Play Act. According to L.A. Times, California became the first state to allow college athletes to earn or profit off their own name and talents. 

With this bill, student athletes are allowed to have endorsement deals with major companies. The bill is not effective until 2023. 

This bill looks to be a great step moving forward for college athletes since they don’t get compensated for their hard work. The Fair Pay To Play Act can change the whole system of the NCAA, where it is the Universities profiting off the student athletes.

If this bill manages to survive it can be an outstanding opportunity for student athletes to be fairly compensated and be more in control of their own journey to success. 

The purpose of the student athletes is to make it to the big leagues. In the big leagues, athletes are fairly paid and have contracts with their teams and student athletes strive for that. 

By being fairly compensated, it gives athletes the chance to pay for their own tuition, take care of his/her family, and any personal obligations.
