It's August now, which means the Sockeye run is pretty much done. Soon we should start seeing the Coho run, which is smaller but still important. After that will be the Fall Feast -- when the bodies of spawned sockeye start washing down the river from Lake Brooks.
The sockeye run this year was smaller than the modern average, one of the worst runs the Naknek River has seen in the last decade. That's why we are seeing so many bears pile up at the falls: they're hungry, and looking for food. We've still had some good pulses though, and it didn't run late like it has in some previous years.
I hope the Coho run is good this year, because the bears could use the boost. I know we've seen some Pink salmon this year also, which i haven't really seen much before. I imagine that the diversity of salmon is extra important when the Sockeye run is worse than usual -- it means the bears have more species to fall back on for food.
also, during August the number of bears we see usually dips. Lots of bears go on "August walkabouts" -- they head up to Brooks Lake or other smaller salmon streams in search of food. There will still be bears on the cams, to be clear -- there are actually more bears during August these days than there were 10 years ago -- just less than there are in July or September.

you know its telling how few people on the internet actually spend time outdoors in general and around actual gay men in particular
because to hear even Tumblr the "gay gender website" talk people only wear harnesses while strapped into a sex swing while being fisted
but the reality is that the harness, both leather and spandex, in gay male world is like stiletto pumps, a bright red lip stick, a short skirt or push up bra.
sure some people are wearing those things because they're about to get laid or hoping to. But lots of people wear them just to feel sexy, confident or powerful. And there's nothing X rated and "shouldn't be seen in public" about any of that.
lots of gay guys wear harnesses to bars or clubs not because its a sex thing, but because its a sexy thing, they feel attractive and confident.
I get that gay men feeling attractive and confident terrifies people, but if you're at Pride and a guy walks past you in jeans and a harness, either shirtless or over his shirt, he didn't violate your civil rights or do a sex thing in front of you, he's wearing a totally appropriate outside that makes him feel confident and powerful.
grow up, deal.
I own this exact harness and I wear it to play Beyblade. unironically
And you do indeed look very cool and powerful playing Beyblade

my cousin’s kid has some kind of developmental disability, idk the details, and the way adults in the family react to this kid is so bleak and insidious and just so frustrating. my mother kept saying how sad it is for the parents and I had to tell her point blank That’s Mean. you are being mean about this child and his future that you’ve already decided is tragic and hopeless and not very worthwhile. and she was like ohh well you know as a parent you just have all these hopes and dreams for your child, it’s just sad when that doesn’t turn out— ok well yeah that explains a lot about your parenting track record but idk how to tell you that your child is not a vessel for the realization of your personal desires and goals. not to mention that everyone deciding this kid is a tragic failure of his parents’ dreams only makes it more likely that he won’t get the supports he needs to do the things he might in fact be capable of. you’re not his parent! you don’t know him! who are you to decide it’s all so tragic! especially, ironically, in my mother’s case bc she literally had various doctors tell her that neither of her kids would grow up to live a normal life or participate in normal milestones. people absolutely thought it was very tragic that I developed so many complex medical issues as a child. and my mother found these reactions to be offensive and demoralizing!! but it’s fine to turn that judgment on others…. like I have complex thoughts around my own disabilities and associated grief but other people rushing to mourn the person you ‘should have been’ just feels cruel to the person you actually are
its so awkward when people ask me why i dropped out and i have to be like "inadequate disability support" bc no one wants to hear this. they're always like i thought they had to provide that though isn't it the law? girl you might want to sit down i have some bad news about the litigation-based enforcement of the americans with disabilities act
then if i do say that theyre like, couldnt you sue? well theoretically maybe but not without spending more money than i have and putting myself through absolute hell. so no. no i can't.
it’s just this
Could I have a Death’s Head Hawkmoth fact?

TODAY'S FACT IS
Did you know that the Lesser Death's Head Hawkmoth (Acherontia styx) is one of the three species called death's head? Like the other two, they like to raid beehives for honey. These ones have also been noted to feed on yuzu fruits in South Korea.

man if you're disabled you've GOT to find some way to make your fuckass body a source of pleasure whenever you can. jacking off. eating good food. wearing soft clothes. kissing an animal on the head. whatever you can do

Your most important survival skill is asking for help
Goddamn preach this
"Your most important survival skill is asking for help." THIS, it makes me so damn pissed off when parents try and normalize that asking for help is a taboo thing!
This feels important to reblog
I hate the upkeep cost of living.

how many nonbinary people have come out publicly only to then semi re-closet themselves because people are so incapable of not being extremely exorsexist towards them immediately... ive seen this happen to nonbinary people across agab we cannot catch a damn break
also the way people tend to see misgendering nonbinary as like. "softer" or easier or more understandable than misgendering a binary trans person. like it doesn't even really matter, because it's basically just an aesthetic choice, and not anything to be taken that seriously
#i remember when mr beard came out and immidiately had to go back in the closet#because people were giving him shit for not changing his presentation or pronouns#its really sad
forgot about mr. beard but yeah that made so upset on his behalf!!!!!
and what's annoying is how often binary trans people just don't seem to react? like this is what i mean by people treat misgendering nonbinary people as "softer." a trans man or a trans woman getting harassed back into the closet is a tragedy, a nonbinary person getting harassed back into the closet is just another wednesday for a lot of binary trans people.
#yeah.#and then when we stand up for ourselves we’re ‘difficult’ and no longer ‘one of the fun chill ones’#i can be chill#but im entitled to the same god damn respect and i will insist upon it#get yourselves right i’m fucking tired
no this too. i do feel there's this. expectation. that all nonbinary people will be rather apathetic about their genders, that the "good" nonbinary people (who isn't "crazy" and "dramatic" and "trying so hard to be woke") don't really care about what pronouns or nouns you use, will be binarize themselves in whatever way is easiest for the binary people & system around them, will be largely unobtrusive about their gender unless it can be a funny joke for binary people (even "inclusive" ones).
& then this feeds into what i described above, binary trans people & cis allies treating nonbinary people being misgendered or going back in the closet as less serious and less tragic and less disruptive than binary people. the assumption that nonbinary people somehow have less stake in being trans, that we never physically transition, that we never have dysphoria, etc. instead of being horrified that recloseting or never coming out ever is so common that so many nonbinary people are so used to repressing their own wants and needs preemptively. using pronouns they don't really connect with just to not be seen as "unreasonable" but it doesn't hurt as bad if its not technically misgendering. there's a lot of pain in the nonbinary community that i think we have never been allowed to fully voice.
