okay lia was born to taiwanese immigrants who eloped to escaped her mother’s rich family

she was called by her biological parents as their little miracle cause it took several tries and loads of running away just to have her

lia was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia when she was 8 months old. her parents can’t afford the treatments so she was adopted by ong jungnam who was one of her doctors

it was years of chemotherapy and hospital stays until she was declared “cancer free” when she was five. (cancer said sike! she found out it relapsed just six months ago)

since then she hated hospitals. gets a slight panic attack every time she has to go with her dad

lia’s extremely intelligent that’s why her adoptive father relied on her to continue his legacy

but! lia loves animals more so she’s on her 2nd of year of veterinary medicine (like please show her all the pets and she’ll love them down)

with their bellies full, and his mood more subdued than normal, they were in his room that was rather neat this time- usually he had different games and consoles spread out on his bed, trying to figure out what game he had wanted to play this time- but he hadn’t had the chance to even get to that point, sometimes he just wasn’t in the mood. he stared at his hands and his bare nails, the fact that there was no colour- that it was so boring, bothered him for some reason, licking his lower lip, muttering softly, “noona. did you know that link from the legend of zelda is non-binary?” 

the words felt heavy on his tongue, feeling more of a confession rather than a simple fact, he peered at lia from under his bangs, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose, nervousness seeping through him, but forcing it not to show. 

lia liked to think that her family is just like any other family out there. sure, their parents might be public figures and they might not be related by blood but at the end of the day, lia would still do anything for her family. especially her siblings. it was a running joke between the ong siblings that they raised each other. she gotta admit that it was partly true due to their parents being busy 95% of the time. at the end of the day, it was just the seven of them together. it was her six siblings that got her through the worst days of her life. lia loves her adoptive parents but she loves her siblings even more. 

tonight, lia was determined to spend some quality time with their youngest. it felt like ages since she last properly hung out with max (even if it was just two days ago). she just didn’t want to miss anything when it comes to her siblings. she doesn’t want to end up regretting that she didn’t spend more time with them. after all, it was in her list that she would make them feel loved every single day and lia took her bucket list seriously. a simple home cooked meal, a text reminding them that she loves them, keeping them company whenever she could. lia did it all.

max had grown into a fine young man and like any other older sibling, lia was just proud of what he had accomplished so far. she remembered when max would hide behind her because he gets shy and now, it seemed like he had settled in very well to the community. “yes ai baby?” lia hummed in response when she heard him calling out to her. max had always been an avid fan of the said game and it was games that bonded the two of them together as well. “hmm, well link’s gender wasn’t really stated. i think link being non-binary would be cool. plus, link would still be awesome no matter what.”

since lia is a hopeless romantic, she was absolutely taken by this movie and watches it whenever she’s bored. it’s a simple cosplay that she came up with since she never really thought she would go to the countdown party. lia doesn’t drink or party but hey there’s a first for everything right?

in her 22 years of life, ong lia could honestly say that she never had a taste of alcohol. 

there were a number of instances where she was tempted to drink and just throw all her cares to the wind, especially when she was in high school. despite being underage, it was quite surprising how much of her peers manage to still sneak into bars and clubs. every time they ask her, she has to shake her head and politely decline. for a social person like lia, the fear of becoming an outsider always haunted her. it made her want to say yes even just for a night. the only thing that stopped her was the voice of her adoptive father reminding her that alcohol is bad for her health. ong jungnam never failed to remind her that her body wasn’t built to handle many things in this world. for 22 years, lia listened to her father. 

the halloween festivities were in full swing as the last week of october rolled around. the neighborhoods definitely brought out their best halloween decorations in order to best each other and honestly, seeing the camaraderie the competition brought was kind of refreshing. lia had already decided that she would not attend the annual countdown party since there was really nothing much for her to do there. then again, her friends made her change her mind and lia decided to come dressed as one of the characters from her favorite anime movie. “think of it as a countdown for your birthday,” they said. giving in to that was the first mistake she made. the second one was when she said fuck it and took her first sip of alcohol then another and another so the rest of the night became a blur. 

the now 23 year old lia woke up with a groan. her head was pounding and honestly, she just wanted to stay in bed all day. stretching her arms, her hand met a soft, warm thing that made her eyes go wide in surprise. that surely didn’t feel like one of the plushies her brothers had given her. lia slowly turned her head and saw a sleeping choi yuri beside her. it took her a solid ten seconds to even comprehend that she wasn’t in her own room and it took ten more to realize that she was shirtless. in bed. with one of yangcheon’s notorious men. “oh hell no. lia, what did you do, you idiot girl.”

at that moment, she did the only thing she could think of in that situation. she burrowed her face in a pillow and squealed. “okay, lia. you need to calm down and think about what happened,” she muttered to herself, running a hand frustratingly through her hair. “what the heck happened?”

with her love for all things pikachu, lia decided to buy an inflatable pikachu mascot. this pikachu is very hyper and loves to give hugs, come say hi and maybe give her some candy? (ps. she loves kitkats)

“ ah ! so scary ! ” he chuckled as he handed them their well earned candy, waving them off as they headed away and to the next house. only he waited around for a moment, leaning in his door frame with his arms wrapped around his plastic jack o’ lantern full of sweets to look out over the neighborhood. spotting something ( or someone ) that didn’t… quite fit the scene.

“ aren’t you a little too old to be trick or treating ? ”

there were a lot of fond memories lia had associated with halloween. it’s not because it was her birthday but rather it was because of the countless trick or treating adventures she and her siblings took when she was younger. as they got older, the halloween tradition slowly stopped and lia found herself looking at the trick or treater with a sense of nostalgia. especially when her siblings started to move out of the ong manor, leaving her alone with their parents who were barely at home. 

this year was indeed a bit different.

for the first time in years, jaejin will be taking them for trick or treating again. in her excitement, she raced ahead of her siblings and abruptly stopped when she realized that she looked like a giant compared to all the tiny kids in their cute costumes. a couple with their kids gave her a weird, judging look as they passed by her. maybe she should have waited for her siblings, max’s cuteness will be able to win over the homeowners so they could give them candies as well. with her siblings nowhere near yet, lia just decided to go to a house she knew too well.

hanbin is jaejin’s best friend. surely, he will give her candy right? “trick or treat!” lia squealed, her voice muffled by her costume. maybe deciding at the last minute to be pikachu isn’t the greatest idea after all but she was already inside the mascot so she might as well own it. “oppa, it’s me! lia bear!” she waved her pikachu arms wildly and hopped towards him.

lia’s feet remained rooted on her spot as she stared at jaejin’s front door. it’s not because she forgot the password or anything, she just didn’t know where the sudden hesitation came from. usually, she would just enter right away since jaejin had given them the passcode. lia also knew that her brother was already expecting her since she did text him of her brilliant plan. honestly, she was a bit surprised when he agreed. she just hoped she wouldn’t fuck this up. 

“jinnie oppa?” lia called out as soon as she entered his apartment, toeing off her shoes and setting them beside his. at least jaejin was home, which means he wasn’t running away from their agreement. “lia’s here,” she announced. as soon as she saw her brother, lia threw herself at him for a hug and a dimpled smile lit up her features. “are you ready? i’m going to make you the most handsome soccer player in korea.” 

the idea came to her one day when she was procrastinating on an essay for one of her classes. lia would be lying if she says that she doesn’t use stupid apps on her phone like those that edit photos to look like one has make up or even change hair colors. she had been tinkering with that app for quite a while when she decided to change jaejin’s hair color. her brother had handsome features that he got from korea’s sweetheart, ha soohye. it was a given that he could rock any hair color but once she edited him with blonde hair, the girl squealed with delight. ong jaejin would look so dashing with that blonde hair, lia knew he’s going to make his fans go wild. 

“oppa, you trust me right?” lia asked and suddenly she doesn’t know if she was talking about the dyeing of hair or if it’s just life in general. although their relationship as siblings had greatly improved for the past year, she just couldn’t ignore the six years he spent estranged from all of them. shaking off those thoughts, lia plastered a smile on her face once again. “let me just mix up the products and we could start!”

certain that he was going to have much, much fun editing this video, sunwoo decides that even if the cake doesn’t turn out perfect then at least the effort was there. and ultimately, he could always blame lia, too. she was the better baker out of the two. he shoots her a gentle, playful scowl before smiling, letting the younger brush the loose flour out of his hair. that’s when he decides to shake his head, letting the flour bounce out of his hair and drop onto her. “you know, you can just borrow an old tshirt of mine if you don’t want to get it on your jacket. or i could actually give you a new merch shirt. you can promote it while you head home.” the laughter is light, happy as he spins slowly in his desk chair. if he were to spin quicker, he knows that the cake in his stomach would probably pop back up. “mostly everyone, yeah. there’s good days and bad days, i try to stay away during the bad days unless it gets a bit too much. i’m trying to get the ahjummas onto my good side, so it’s easier to win them back over if things get too hectic again. i think opposite is starting to like me more than anticipated.” 

lia enjoyed the freedom she acquired once she had the chance to get out of the hospital. while her adoptive father personally oversaw her health progress, she was still left under the care of her personal nanny. for as long as she could remember, she saw her nanny more than she saw her adoptive mother. it was safe to say that lia craved affection as much as she gave it. the nannies often joked that lia had a penchant for collecting friends the way her parents collect children. and looking back, young lia was indeed too thrilled at the prospect of living in a community with a lot of children. ones that could actually play with her and not just sit with her as they waited for their treatments to be finished.

sunwoo was one of the kids that lia managed to befriend when she was young. he was not that much older than her, yet she felt as if he was wiser beyond his years. he treated lia like she was his own sister and in turn she shamelessly called him, ‘my sunwoo oppa.’ even when they were young, lia always knew that sunwoo would become successful. with the way he took care of his younger siblings to the passion he puts in every video, it was basically a given. she couldn’t help this sense of pride that fills her heart whenever he reached a milestone in his career. 

so when sunwoo gave her the idea of baking for a video and enlisted her help, lia didn’t hesitate to agree. he could have asked her to do the silliest of videos with him yet she would still yes. it was a great way to spend time with him and she would always do her absolute best to help her oppa. she just didn’t know that they would forget to put baking soda and baking powder on the second cake which led to an absolute disaster. in lia’s defense, she was too distracted by sunwoo to notice the missing ingredients.

“oppa!” lia exclaimed as flour flew around from sunwoo shaking his head like a puppy. majority of the flour now settled on her lap and the girl had the sudden urge to retaliate in the only way she knew how. she poked him in the places where she knew he was ticklish, “look at the mess you made, oh sunwoo!” lia glared playfully as she grabbed a tissue to somewhat clean up the mess. “although no one loves free stuff more than rich people, i’d just borrow an old shirt if that’s okay,” she grinned at him. “i’d rather buy the shirt and support one of my favorite youtubers y’know.” the amount of merch she had of sunwoo was a bit astounding really. it was one of the few ways lia could show her support and she proudly wears those tshirts around especially during her classes. 

“that’s a good thing to hear. i was a bit worried when you told me you were moving here. living with a lot of people can be quite taxing,” she smiled at her childhood friend as she plopped on the floor. the exhaustion finally seeping through her. with her tummy full of cake, lia was on her merry way to a food coma. “great strategy right there, oppa. get all the ahjummas to like you cause then they might send you some food or banchan and i heard one of them makes excellent kimchi.”

new york;

summer of 2015 new york city lia had always welcomed change and spontaneity in her life. as the famous adage goes, the only constant in life is change. as she was coddled by her father when she was young, she lived for the rare deviations in her daily routine. that involved her blooming relationships with her siblings. growing up, lia was aware of the seemingly great distances between the ong children. sometimes it felt so wide that she didn’t know how to reach out to them but then again, lia was not a quitter. she told herself that slowly but surely, she will build bridges that would connect her to them. with enough love and affection, she will make it work then it would bring a pleasant change to all of them.

boqin going to new york however, was an unwelcome change for lia. she tried to tell herself that it was for his studies, that he would be doing what he loved out there, and that she should be proud of him. and she was. she genuinely was. it’s just that, just a few years ago jaejin left to go to england and then suddenly, he was leaving as well. lia wouldn’t admit it, but she was terrified that the bridges she built would crumble and boqin would be too far away for her to reach. that’s when lia thought of a brilliant plan, one that entailed patiently waiting for the next summer vacation. 

after her graduation, lia packed her bags and caught the red eye to new york. the flight was draining and she was sure that she would be jet lagged but still, lia was buzzing with excitement. thankfully, she didn’t get lost in the bustling city and arrived in front of his door safely. she double checked boqin’s address that she wrote on a piece of paper before knocking on the door. it had been a year since she last hugged her brother and she couldn’t wait to do it again. 

“gege!” lia exclaimed as soon as the door opened. she threw her arms around boqin and hugged him tightly. “i’ve missed you so much but..” she pulled away and squished his cheeks as a frown graced her features. “ya! you’ve gotten skinnier. haven’t you been eating well? does the food suck? are they putting too much stress on you? cause if they are then i will march there right now and i will give them a piece of my mind.”
