Hey Mr. Hodge? Worms
Elliot

my desk drawe
I have a headache..
Hello! I'm Elliot Murphy. I'm here for the assistant job? You're Mr. Hodge right?
That would be me, yes! And you are the latest applicant. Come on in, you'll want to get used to this environment early.
Oh! thank you, thank you. I was referred by someone nameeeeed.. Seth? If i recall?
Oh. I'm sorry, I'm awful with names at times, I'm not familiar with any Seth... Either way, your recommendation letter and curriculum seemed promising (and legit) so that shouldn't be an issue.
Seth! he's uhm.. yay high, giant uncomfortable smile, uh.. unnerving? at times?
Well, that certainly narrows it down a bit, yeah. I am familiar with creepy smiles. [He claps his hands together.] ...Now! I guess we should start wuth some routine questions, making sure all the forms are correct. My office is that way, follow me.
Alrighty, Mr. Hodge :-)
[ And he does, as so. ]
[Mr Hodge's office is nothing fancy at all, as one would expect when they see Bouchard's. There's a shelving unit with trinkets, two filing cabinets, a fake plant in the corner gathering dust and... An unusual amount of cobwebs, though he doesn't seem to mind. His set up is simple, maybe the most noteworthy thing in the room is the poster behind him, badly covering up a dent in the wall, or the photo frame on his desk, turned away from Elliot.
He sits behind his desk, going through the standard questions with a light smile: 'Where else have you worked before this?', 'Do you find yourself more comfortable working in teams or alone if given the chance?', 'Have you any experience with the paranormal?'
Maybe that last one is not standard for all job interviews. But he seemed pretty genuine about it.]
[ Elliot all in all seemed relatively eager to answer all the questions, it's that sort of attitude that would get you turned away at lame corporate job but y'know The Magnus Institute isn't anything like that no siree. If I was a sucker I'd definitely hire him as like a janitor or something. ]
“ — Oh! I should mention, I had some training in The Cartguay Forensic Research Centre in Vancouver Canada. Seth mentioned this job involved alot of stuff like that. ”
[ He smiled before suddenly snapping his head towards a window. Was it there when they got here? ]
Forensics! Not bad. I did follow a handful of courses during university, I probably could've switched my degree to that, but... Hm?
[He also turns to the window, and his smile fails a little. That is not supposed to be there, and he knows this, not just because they are not at ground level where a window would be needed. Still, his voice is calm.]
...You have a very good ear. You noticed it right away.
That's not.. That isn't normal, is it?
[ He turns his head back, his smile faded. The window didn't show a typical view of the outside, no, it showed a rather clinical looking corridor lined with various doors with barely visible plaques on them. ]
This isn't a normal thing right?
[ Elliot doesn't seem confused as he is a little horrified. ]
No, that is not normal. Give me a second.
[He gets to stand with a light sigh, still composed as he stands in front of the window for a good few seconds, watching the corridors on the other side shift and change slowly under a sickly yellow light. After brief contemplation, he opens it with a click, and puts his head inside...]
Fuck off, Michael.
[And then he slams it. He turns around, smiling again, and walks back to his desk.]
Pardon my language. I promise this does not actually happen often.
[ It does not go away, it persists. The corridors twist and bend erratically as he slams it closed but it's not gone whatsoever, shame. ]
Oh.. Good, uhm. Do you know why it happens Mr. Hodge?
[ He twiddled his fingers nervously. ]
Oh, it's like an optical illusion...
[He did not deliver that with a much confidence as he wanted. And that's because it's a lie. He sits back down and glances at it the corner of his eye - eye, which now is... somewhat vibrant? The other is fine. Must be a trick of the light.]
You're not familiar with that kind of thing, are you?
Ah! Uhm— Nooooo?.. I'm often not known to be familiar with this sort of thing, Nuh uh, nope. Not once have I ever been familiar with thisss thingggg..
Ever, I've never been familiar with this ever.
[ He's lying through his teeth and it's sort of painful how obvious it is, like literally actually painful, as in you should probably be writhing a little by now. His eyes shift a slight blueish tint as he blinked awkwardly. ]
Are you familiar with this sort of thing?
[ Yeah shift the blame on him, like that'll fix this. ]
Actually, I am.
[Mr Hodge, you will find, is not the kind who catches on to sarcasm or snide remarks easily. He is, however, not too bad at catching lies and reading body language. And still, he keeps smiling. His hands on the desk, fingers interlocked.]
Something similar to that "window" over there, but without the whole 'spooky corridor' illusion. It's not that effective at getting you when you know how it works, right? Like working at an escape room.
Let's put it like that, yeah? This department is like a walk-in puzzle. We come in, find a place for the new object left in our care, sort through the occasional messes, and reorganise. I wouldn't say you have the opportunity to be bored around here for long before something else happens.
[ He blinks. His eyes are a soft blue. His smile falters slightly. ]
Whhu— Uh, what sort of things happen here? Is a regular work day normal or is that out of the question for a job like this?
Oh, I promise most of your workdays would be 'normal' enough! Most of mine is filling out digital forms after we make physical copies, handling and classifying evidence... What I am saying, is that you should expect yourself to handle little surprises like human remains and creepy books every once in a while. Or... Something like that. Which is best to ignore or leave to me.
...You're shifting. Do you want some water?
I.. Uh, I'm what? What were you saying about human remains?
Hello! I'm Elliot Murphy. I'm here for the assistant job? You're Mr. Hodge right?
