When people get into yoga, they are often obsessed with headstands and inversions and “cool” poses. Endless pictures all over social media.

Personally I appreciate the more simple poses. They are the foundations that make the more complex ones possible.

Downward dog is a pose everyone does but few do it right. It’s probably the most difficult pose for me.

Pigeon poses are a blessing that open my hips, as most men have much tightness there. It is very healing.

Side-planks encourage both balance and strength, which are the two elements present in physical grace.

Even just lunges with twists help to open my back body and create space in my trunk.

And don’t forget corpse pose, lying down at the end of a long session and feeling your body return to its basal state rooted in the earth. It is the conscious transition from our physical practice back into our daily life.

These are the less-glorified aspects of yoga that will nonetheless change your body and restore your nature child-like range of motion.

Don’t be intimidated by the outer appearance of difficult poses and the typical body-types. There is so much more to yoga.

I can’t tell you exactly what I was expecting the rest of a hermit crab to look like, but it most certainly wasn’t THAT.
