Bradley Cooper and director David O. Russell photographed for The Wall Street Journal in Los Angeles, CA on November 30, 2013 in conjunction with their new film, American Hustle.

Cooper was charming, quick-witted, and happy to tell me about his Philly roots, the new film he’s shooting, and his strategies for dealing with paparazzi. Russell brought an intensity I immediately sensed, so I simply asked for his help in creating the kind of photos I wanted. We looked at a book of photos by Yousuf Karsh, my inspiration for this shoot (and widely-regarded photographic icon) and Russell loved the images. We had a cinema/photo lighting nerd moment…and then we goto shooting. I’m thrilled with the results, and so pleased to have had this chance to meet these men, both of them at the top of their game.

This was so cool for me. Yesterday I had the honor of being photographed by master photographer Jill Enfield. She uses the same method that was used to take portraits of soldiers back in the civil war. The process is called Wet Collodion, and involves carrying around a portable darkroom. After the photo is taken, Jill instantly uses a special mix of chemicals to develop the photo on a piece of glass.

Recently she’s used this method in a series called The New Immigrants, where she takes portraits of recent immigrants to the United States. She explains: “Using this method to document recent immigrants helps to show that they are no less brave than those who came over on boats 150 years ago.”
